OFTERSCHWANG, Germany -- No one saw it coming. Not even Erin Mielzynski, who delivered the race of her life Sunday to give Canada its first World Cup slalom victory in more than four decades. "Its a little slice of heaven right now," said Mielzynski. "Right now I dont want the day to end. Its surreal." The 21-year-old from Guelph, Ont., had never placed higher than 13th on the World Cup circuit but used a strong second run to deliver a breakthrough performance. In the process, she became the first Canadian woman to win a World Cup slalom race since Betsy Clifford in 1971. "Today my goal was just to ski like I do in training," said Mielzynski. "I was a little nervous to do that because its a little different than the way I race. I think that made the difference. I kind of let go of everything else and it was just me and the course." Mielzynskis two-run total of one minute 53.59 seconds came in warm conditions. Resi Stiegler of the United States finished second, while Marlies Schild of Austria placed third to win her fourth overall World Cup slalom title. Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., finished fifth while Anna Goodman of Pointe-Claire, Que., was 17th. Mielzynskis previous best results were a pair of 13th-place finishes last year -- in a slalom in December in Courchevel, France, and another slalom in February in Zwiesel, Germany. The womens ski team had been looking desperately for this kind of breakthrough. During a meeting with the skiers on Saturday, coach Hugues Ansermoz wrote "Go For The Win" on the top of a sheet featuring their start times. Sitting fifth after the first heat, Mielzynski found herself in position to do just that. She made up a deficit of 0.60 seconds by going smoothly down the course and jumping ahead of Stiegler. "Erin believed in herself," said Ansermoz. "What she did in the second run was amazing. Because after being fifth in the first run, I thought: OK, shes going to be so nervous, its going to be so tough to manage all those emotions. "That was absolutely incredible what she did." Mielzynski and Stiegler gave the podium an unexpected North American flavour and prevented Schild from tying Vreni Schneiders record of 34 career slalom wins. Schild had won six of seven previous slalom races this season. The podium finishers benefited from a pair of mistakes by first-run leader Tina Maze of Slovenia. Maze missed a gate on the slushy course and failed to finish. That mistake delivered the slalom title to Schild. Maze also failed to make up any ground on overall leader Lindsey Vonn of the United States, who straddled a gate in the first heat and crashed out. Vonn leads by 494 points, with six races remaining. A win is worth 100 points. Stiegler, whose promising career was set back by several serious injuries, had a pair of fourth-place finishes in 2007, in a slalom and super-combined. "Im ecstatic, I almost have no words for it," Stiegler said. "I dont know why it all came together today, but maybe it could have come together all year and was just waiting for this one day." The Canadians could identify. Gagnon joked that she never expected a fifth-place finish to fly under the radar. The Canadian women train together year-round and Mielzynski made it clear that she viewed the victory as one for the entire team. They were all in tears in the finish area after she completed her winning run. "Just seeing Erin doing that, it was so inspirational," said Gagnon. "She does everything perfectly. "She might almost be an over-thinker. She eats perfectly, she trains and does everything that it takes ... shes just an incredible athlete." An incredible performance on Sunday left the entire team hoping there would be a carry-over affect in the weeks ahead. "I think therell be a lot more to come," said Mielzynski. "We were saying today I broke the ice. But now the ice is broken." Minnesota Vikings Chad Greenway Mens Home Jersey Game Nike NFL Purple . Unfotunately for local fans, it will not involve the Maple Leafs. The Hamilton Bulldogs announced Tuesday that the team will host a regular season game outdoors at Ivor Wynne Stadium against the Toronto Marlies on Saturday, January 21st. It will mark the first time in the leagues history that an outdoor game will be held north of the border. “This will be a week-long celebration of hockey, with an NHL and AHL alumni game, local minor hockey games, culminating with a battle between the Bulldogs and the Marlies on January 21st. It is our chance to showcase what a great hockey community Hamilton truly is,” said Hamilton Bulldogs Owner and Chairman Michael Andlauer in a release. “To me, this is about more than just a hockey game, its about bringing the community together in celebration of what is truly Canadiana; an outdoor hockey game between the farm clubs of the two most storied franchises in hockey, being played in a Canadian Football League stadium.” The game is set to cash in on a number of rivalries, not the least of which is between the two Ontario cities.dddddddddddd Added to the intrigue will be the fact that the game features the AHL affiliates of what are arguably the NHLs oldest rivals, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. “Hockey fans in southern Ontario are in for a terrific experience as the American Hockey League goes outdoors for the first time in Canada”, said AHL President and Chief Executive Officer David Andrews. “Historic Ivor Wynne Stadium has been the site of many great Hamilton-Toronto games in the CFL, and now the Hamilton Bulldogs and Toronto Marlies will bring their intense pro hockey rivalry to what could be an all-time record AHL crowd.” Bulldogs season ticket holders will automatically get a ticket to the outdoor game in their packages in addition to getting first crack at additional tickets prior to them going on sale to the public. Tickets will then go on sale to the general public on October 11th at 10:00 a.m. Ticket prices will be announced in the near future. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ' ' '
