NEW YORK -- Re-Enter Sandman? The New York Yankees selected Mariano Rivera III, the son of the former record-breaking closer, in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Saturday. The 20-year-old Rivera, a starting pitcher as a sophomore at Iona College, went 2-6 with a 5.40 ERA and five complete games and a team-leading 50 strikeouts in 70 innings for the Gaels. The 5-foot-11 right-hander bears a strong resemblance physically to his famous father, who saved a major league-record 652 games and helped lead the Yankees to five World Series titles. But Rivera III allowed 72 hits and opponents batted .269 against him, and he was considered by many to be a fringe prospect because of his inexperience on the mound. Yankees manager Joe Girardi spoke to Mariano Rivera recently and asked him for a scouting report on his son. "Mo wasnt sure if he got drafted what he would do," Girardi said before the Yankees played the Royals in Kansas City on Saturday night. "But I think its neat he got drafted by the Yankees and well see what happens." Rivera III has a fastball that sits in the low-90s and a terrific slider -- although his cutter isnt quite yet as devastating as his dads. He also wore the No. 6 at Iona, rather than his fathers familiar No. 42. "Well, his velocity, I mean, hes gotten bigger and stronger and its increased," Girardi said. "Mo didnt have much to say -- Mos always been a humble guy -- but he loves what hes doing." Rivera transferred to Iona from Quinnipiac and was originally an outfielder before redshirting and moving to the mound last year, when he pitched in 11 games for the Gaels. During their talk, Lemieux was reported to have discussed with Crosby how a captains erratic behaviour can negatively impact the team.Lemieuex told Crosby... "You cant behave the way you did at the end of the game, it gives off a bad vibe to your teammates, it gives off a vibe that might be portraying you in a negative light, especially when youre struggling. http://www.authenticsoccers.com/chelsea-fc-fernando-torres-jersey/. Now shes ready to make waves in the U.S. Pace shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday to grab a share of the third-round lead with Laura Diaz in the Marathon Classic. She can barely express what a breakthrough win on the LPGA Tour might bring. Miranda Atletico Madrid Jersey . The 114th-ranked Lorenzi broke Monacos serve to go up 4-3 in the decisive set and held on to close the match in 2 hours, 34 minutes at the Ibirapuera Arena. The 32-year-old Italian squandered a match point before losing the second set, but was in control in the third to pick up the win in the ATP 250 tournament in South Americas biggest city. Luis Suarez Barcelona Jersey . Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, president of the EOM (Municipal Olympic Company), will be leaving her post but will remain as an advisor, a city hall statement said Tuesday. AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- The torch was passed by the All Blacks selectors on Thursday, and nobody in New Zealand was anxious or surprised when Israel Dagg replaced Mils Muliaina as their No. 1 fullback. The decision was emotional for coach Graham Henry because Muliaina is the second most-capped All Black ever on 98 tests, but neither he nor his fellow selectors could resist Daggs quality performances in his only two tests this year and picked him to meet France this weekend in a World Cup pool match. Muliaina, an All Black for eight years and the teams undisputed fullback for four of them, fell off his usual high standards this season and the New Zealand selectors could have picked him as a reliable safety net. But Dagg, with all of eight caps, presented a thrilling attacking option. And the All Blacks dont play safe. "Its a bit of an honour," Dagg said after the team was named on Thursday. "The guys (Muliaina) been there, played 98 tests and Ive been given the opportunity. Im pretty excited about it. On Saturday, Ive just got to go out there and repay the faith that the selectors have shown in me and hopefully go well. "Hes a good guy. Hes talked to me about the game. We work closely during training. Everyones in this for one job and thats to win each game. So there are no grudges or anything in the team." Henry has been amazed that Dagg is playing rugby this year, let alone for the All Blacks. Dagg thought his season was over in March when he tore his thigh muscle off the bone making a punt in the Super 15. He needed surgery immediately, and the injury was so uncommon that Dagg didnt know when he could return. But in midd-August, intermittent appearances for his club and province were enough for him to be drafted by the All Blacks into the Tri-Nations match against South Africa in Port Elizabeth, where he was one of their few highlights in an 18-5 loss.dddddddddddd. Dagg called his display a fluke, but the slippery runners two-try effort against Tonga in the World Cup opener put all the pressure on Muliaina, who didnt have a chance to respond when he tweaked his hamstring last week. Now, Muliaina, who came to Henrys attention when he was a high school principal and attracted him from Southland to Auckland, might not reach 100 tests. Muliaina should get a run in the last pool game against Canada next week but he doesnt fit into the reserves for the playoffs, and hes playing for NTT Docomo in Japan from next year. "Our job is to make sure we do the best every week we can, and hopefully (Muliainas century) fits into that big picture," Henry said. "No doubt wed want that to happen if at all possible, but the team comes first and the first guy to say thats the right way would be Mils because hes that sort of person." Dagg might have blossomed into a top cricketer if rugby hadnt taken over, as he was a fast bowler who made junior representative teams for Hawkes Bay and Central Districts. At 23, hes eight years younger than Muliaina, and heading for a distinguished career. He will play France for the first time. "Obviously there are a lot people out there who want us to do well against the French," Dagg said. "Theres a bit of a hatred, maybe, towards them. But hopefully we can go out there on Saturday and perform." cheap jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys ' ' '
