NEW YORK -- Re-Enter Sandman? The New York Yankees selected Mariano Rivera III, the son of the former record-breaking closer, in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Saturday. The 20-year-old Rivera, a starting pitcher as a sophomore at Iona College, went 2-6 with a 5.40 ERA and five complete games and a team-leading 50 strikeouts in 70 innings for the Gaels. The 5-foot-11 right-hander bears a strong resemblance physically to his famous father, who saved a major league-record 652 games and helped lead the Yankees to five World Series titles. But Rivera III allowed 72 hits and opponents batted .269 against him, and he was considered by many to be a fringe prospect because of his inexperience on the mound. Yankees manager Joe Girardi spoke to Mariano Rivera recently and asked him for a scouting report on his son. "Mo wasnt sure if he got drafted what he would do," Girardi said before the Yankees played the Royals in Kansas City on Saturday night. "But I think its neat he got drafted by the Yankees and well see what happens." Rivera III has a fastball that sits in the low-90s and a terrific slider -- although his cutter isnt quite yet as devastating as his dads. But in midd-August, intermittent appearances for his club and province were enough for him to be drafted by the All Blacks into the Tri-Nations match against South Africa in Port Elizabeth, where he was one of their few highlights in an 18-5 loss.dddddddddddd. Dagg called his display a fluke, but the slippery runners two-try effort against Tonga in the World Cup opener put all the pressure on Muliaina, who didnt have a chance to respond when he tweaked his hamstring last week. Now, Muliaina, who came to Henrys attention when he was a high school principal and attracted him from Southland to Auckland, might not reach 100 tests. Muliaina should get a run in the last pool game against Canada next week but he doesnt fit into the reserves for the playoffs, and hes playing for NTT Docomo in Japan from next year. "Our job is to make sure we do the best every week we can, and hopefully (Muliainas century) fits into that big picture," Henry said. "No doubt wed want that to happen if at all possible, but the team comes first and the first guy to say thats the right way would be Mils because hes that sort of person." Dagg might have blossomed into a top cricketer if rugby hadnt taken over, as he was a fast bowler who made junior representative teams for Hawkes Bay and Central Districts. At 23, hes eight years younger than Muliaina, and heading for a distinguished career. He will play France for the first time. "Obviously there are a lot people out there who want us to do well against the French," Dagg said. "Theres a bit of a hatred, maybe, towards them.
