Bin Hammam has since been banned from fifa coins FIFA for life. Qatar denies he was ever involved with the bid, which it won despite having no FIFA tradition and summer temperatures of 113 degrees F (or 45 degrees C). It is estimated that over 900 workers, mainly from India and Nepal, have died in the construction of new stadiums for the tournament. Now the electronics giant Sony, one of the principal sponsors of the 2022 tournament, has called for an investigation into the claims. "As a FIFA partner, we expect these allegations to be investigated appropriately," said the company in a statement. "We continue to expect FIFA to adhere to its principles of integrity, ethics and fair FIFA 15 play across all aspects of its operations."Fifa President Sepp Blatter gestures next to the FIFA trophy after a media conference in Sao Paulo (Reuters)Among a number of allegations, the newspaper claims Bin Hammam had a meeting with Russian President Putin just weeks before the December 2010 vote where the two men discussed "bilateral sporting relations." Russia won the bidding to host the 2018 tournament, beating out FIFA. Last week it was claimed Bin Hammam also bribed African FIFA officials to the tune of £3 million.U.S. attorney Michael Garcia is investigating claims of corruption surrounding the bids and will report back to FIFA following this month's FIFA Finals in Brazil. However he won't take account of the millions of documents unveiled by the Sunday Times because they appeared "too late."Sepp Blatter, 78, FIFA president since 1998, has yet to comment on the new allegations. The former PR man for a Swiss watch manufacturer was groomed by the previous FIFA president, Brazilian João Havelange. Havelange later fell from grace when it emerged he had taken bribes from a sports marketing company. Despite calls for the 2022 bid to be re-run and for Blatter to resign, the FIFA president remains defiant: next week he is expected to announce his intention to stand as president for four more years.HBO host John Oliver unleashed an epic rant against FIFA on Sunday ahead of the FIFA 15 in Brazil. On Sunday’s episode of his new show, “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver explained something he called the Sausage Principle—“if you love something, never find out how it’s made.” Over the next 13 minutes, the television host criticized FIFA, soccer’s international governing body, on its decision to force the sale of beer during FIFA games in Brazil, its wasteful use of local taxpayers’ money, its status as a nonprofit organization despite a billion-dollar cash reserve, the increasingly problematic situation surrounding the 2022 FIFA in Qatar, and various other unsavory aspects of the group’s reputation.“For American viewers who may never have encountered them, FIFA is a comically grotesque organization,” Oliver said.Oliver is just the latest among countless individuals who have questioned FIFA’s actions ahead of this year’s event.Street protests have plagued Brazil’s major cities for months, as groups such as public transportation workers and the homeless march against their government’s decision to spend an estimated $14 billion to fund FIFA’s tournament, all while granting the organization expansive tax breaks.
