In a February 2015 interview Kanye West, speaking about his then-brand new Yeezy Boost line of sneakers said, “I don’t want the price to be $350. I don’t want to play this sneaker culture game where people be reselling them for high prices.” Yet two years since Yeezy Boosts first hit the market, West’s signature sneakers are nearly impossible to buy new but incredibly easy to Nike Air Max 90 Mujer resell—and at a very healthy profit. The question of whether or not these panic-inducing prices are sustainable is a complicated one. Both Adidas and the Yeezy resellers of the world seem to want different outcomes. While resellers are happy with an easy 500% return on investment, Adidas, presumably, wants to Nike Roshe Run Dame meet demand; after all, a sneaker sold on a secondary market doesn’t make Adidas any money. However, the dynamics behind the Nike Air Max 90 Mujer Yeezy’s exclusivity suggest that neither party, much to Kanye’s Nike Internationalist Femme dismay, can afford an accessible Yeezy. Re-sellers, despite their sometimes unsavory methods, are actually the backbone of the Yeezy’s position as a hyped-up sneaker. In a sneaker market saturated with lazy collaborations, Yeezys felt fresh and innovative from the get-go when they debuted in 2015. Daishin Sugano, co-founder and CPO of the sneaker market app GOAT, cites the Yeezy’s synergy of everything sneakerheads love in 2017 as the central factor in the market’s strength. “This a lifestyle shoe. It’s hitting at a point in time where people are super mobile and need to wear a shoe that’s comfortable and also looks good,” he says. Combine the Yeezy’s high-sneaker-tech Boost sole, its unique design, their “Kanye cool factor,” and, above all else, their limited Adidas ZX 750 Femme numbers, it’s not surprising that they’ve managed to command such high resale prices over the past two and a half years.
 
Like stocks, the Yeezy reseller market operates on principles of risk and reward. Josh Luber, CEO of StockX, explains that if you gather as much information as possible on sneaker prices and “trading volume”, a typical market will emerge. “For any sneaker on the secondary market,” he explains, “the resale price over time looks almost exactly like a Nike swoosh.”
 
What he means is that on release day, Yeezy hopefuls who weren’t able to secure a pair through the Adidas Confirmed app or various raffles park themselves in front of a computer. As the countdown clock strikes zero, there’s a rush to the checkout window. With the right combination of skill and a blessing from the adidas.com servers, the shoes are theirs.
