SACRAMENTO, California (CNN) -- DNA tests confirmed Friday the bodies of a woman and a baby boy found in the San Francisco Bay area were those of Laci Peterson and her son.

Peterson, 27, eight months pregnant with a son who was to be named Connor, disappeared from her Modesto, California, hometown on December 24.

Her husband, Scott Peterson, was arrested Friday while driving in San Diego and taken back to Modesto, said police, who admitted they were concerned he might try to cross the border into Mexico.

"There are no other suspects," said Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden.

"There is no question in our minds that the unidentified female is Laci Peterson and the unidentified fetus is the biological child of Laci and Scott Peterson," said California Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

Lockyer said the chances of the Petersons not being the parents of the boy were in the billions. The Contra Costa County Coroner will make the final formal identification. Laci Peterson was due to deliver her son February 10.

Wasden told reporters Laci Peterson's relatives were "devastated" when they heard the news.

Stanislaus County District Attorney James Brazelton said Scott Peterson likely would be charged with double capital murder early next week, but he said prosecutors would not necessarily seek the death penalty.

The bodies washed ashore Sunday and Monday in separate locations about two miles from the marina at Point Isabel Regional Park on San Francisco Bay, about 80 miles west of Modesto.

A large black tarpaulin came ashore about 60 yards from where Laci Peterson's body was found, although it was not known whether it was connected to the case, said East Bay Region Park Police Chief Norm Lapera.

A passer-by discovered the woman's badly decomposed remains Monday less than two miles away from where those of the baby boy were found the day before.

Forensic teams could not immediately identify the bodies, and Contra Costa County coroner's office called in a forensic anthropologist to examine the remains.

DNA tests were conducted because the body was missing its head, sources close to the investigation told CNN. Without the skull, investigators could not use dental records, the quickest tool in body identification.

Modesto police recently reclassified the Peterson case as a homicide.

Investigators twice searched the Petersons' home, and impounded Scott's car and boat shortly after Laci's disappearance. Police had not called Scott Peterson a suspect in the case.

I thought the same thing, Wings. But then I saw news clips of a hord of news reporters following him thru the airport. Maybe it was to stop the reporters from recognizing him. You would think if he was going to run, he would have done it right after the body was found.

Accordng to cnn articles he was down near the mexico border, and they believed he was going to try to make a run for it, but he was also aware he was being observed, so was being cautious about it (my own summary of what they were saying, not their exact words).

Thank God the FBI and the local police had him under surveilance the whole time. That was a smart move of them to install a tracking device on his vehicle.

MODESTO, California (CNN) -- The family of Scott Peterson has proclaimed his innocence and expressed "devastation" over the deaths of his wife and unborn son. He's scheduled to appear in court Monday on murder charges.

He is accused of killing his 7 1/2-month pregnant wife and their unborn child.

In a statement released late Sunday by Peterson's sister, Susan Caudillo, the Petersons said: "Words cannot adequately express our sadness and grief at the loss of our beloved Laci and baby Connor. Our family has lost a wife, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law and an aunt.

"We are devastated by this loss and will forever keep her and Connor in our hearts," they said. "She was a bright and beautiful addition to our family."

The statement continued, "Our time of mourning and grief is compounded by the accusations made against Scott. We believe in his innocence, and he has our total and unwavering support."

Thanking those who have supported them, the Petersons said, "We ask for your continuing prayers for both families during this difficult time."

Laci Peterson's family, through a spokeswoman, asked for privacy for the holiday weekend and said they would make a public statement Monday.

Scott Peterson is being held in the Stanislaus County Jail in Modesto. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday at 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. EDT), Sheriff's Department spokesman Kelly Huston said. However, the judge may decide to postpone the arraignment until Tuesday.

Huston said Peterson is classified as a "maximum security" inmate because of the pending charges against him -- capital murder with special circumstances.

The double homicide charge against Peterson constitutes the special circumstances in the case, making him eligible for the death penalty. But, prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek that penalty.

Although Peterson has met only with his attorney since his arrest, he has made several phone calls, Huston said. He also has access to television.

Peterson is in isolation, separated from the inmate population for his own protection.

"There are folks who have an unfavorable opinion of him (Peterson) and, therefore, we've provided him with protection," Huston said.

The spokesman said Peterson is escorted by deputies whenever he leaves his cell. There have been threats made by inmates against Peterson, but Huston declined to elaborate.

Earlier in the weekend, Scott Peterson's parents criticized the investigation, telling Time magazine that Modesto police "bungled" the probe, misled Laci Peterson's parents and ignored evidence that did not fit their theory.

Laci Peterson, 27, disappeared December 24, prompting an intense four-month search that ended Friday when state authorities said DNA tests proved two bodies that washed ashore in San Francisco Bay were the missing Modesto woman and her unborn child.

Modesto Police Chief Ray Wasden said divers would return to the area where the bodies were found to search for more evidence. The site is just a few miles from the marina where Scott Peterson said he had gone fishing the day his wife disappeared.

Sources close to the investigation said on March 12 and 13 investigators using sonar located something they believed was a body beneath the bay. Bad weather and ships' wakes -- the area is in the shipping lanes -- kept them from investigating further, however.

If what they saw was the body of Laci Peterson, investigators said all that disturbance might have loosened the bodies from whatever was holding them down.

Scott Peterson told police he had seen his wife last when he left their home to go fishing early December 24. Police verified a receipt Scott Peterson supplied from a parking lot at the Berkeley, California, marina where he said he was fishing.

Following reports that Scott Peterson had an affair prior to Laci's disappearance, his wife's family backed away from their initial support of him and urged that he fully cooperate with police.

Peterson then went his own way, even showing up in Los Angeles, California -- nearly 300 miles south of Modesto -- at one point to pass out fliers, saying the search area needed to be expanded.

In an interview with Time magazine's Jill Underwood for Time.com, Scott's parents said they know their son is innocent and accused police of misleading Laci's parents.

"Our son is innocent. We know that. We've known it from day one," Lee Peterson said.

"(Laci's parents) know it too," Jackie Peterson added. "They supported him fully until the police misled them and that was to divide and separate him from them."

Jackie Peterson said Modesto police discredited anyone who claimed to have seen Laci after a phone conversation she had with her mother on December 23. Her husband said some of those witnesses were "prominent people."

"If it doesn't fit their theory, by God, they don't want to investigate it," Lee said. "I just can't be any more emphatic than that."

The sheriff said investigators were "very close" to arresting Scott Peterson even before the headless body of his wife and the unborn boy they had already named Connor came ashore the DNA tests were ordered.

The body of the boy, who was due to be born in February, was found April 13 by someone walking along a trail at the Point Isabel Regional Park, which sits on the San Francisco Bay. Laci's body was found washed up on rocks the next day, about one and a quarter miles from the unborn baby's body, authorities said.

Those discoveries ignited fears that Peterson might try to flee the country. Peterson had lost weight, dyed his hair lighter and grown a mustache and goatee since he was last seen.

"We believed that we were very close to having the information to make an arrest in this case," Chief Wasden said. "Of course, the discovery of the remains really accelerated everything forward. But the detectives were working towards that conclusion. "

Moving quickly -- and before the DNA results were in -- police arrested Peterson early Friday in San Diego, where Peterson's parents live. Wasden said police had secured the warrant for his arrest a day earlier.

Dont get me wrong I truly believe Scott Peterson killed both is wife and unborn son, but does anyone know what evidence Police have that gave them cause to arrest and charge him with Murder?! My only guess is that tarp had some forensic evidence linking him to bodies!

David - I'm quite sure that when it was announced there would be a news conference last Friday, because there were "specific changes" in this investigation - this meant the bodies had been identified. Then and only then, did police move in and arrest SP. Remember, the FBI had installed a tracking device on his vehicle - they knew every move he made and they were at the ready.

Yes I understand but what (I wonder) evidence do Polica have to link him to their murders? Outside of bodies in bay where he fished I have heard no tie in to him! I hate to see anoth "OJ" case!
