SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Researchers in Singapore said on Friday they had developed a new SARS test kit capable of detecting the deadly respiratory virus in 15 minutes.

In some cases, the result is known in just two minutes.

The kit, resembling a home pregnancy test, looks for antibodies of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome virus in tiny drops of serum, and can be used without special training.

Presence of the antibodies signals that a patient is infected with SARS, said Genelabs Diagnostics Pte Ltd (GLD), which developed the kit with the Singapore government-run Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.

SARS originated in southern China and was spread early this year to 30 countries by travelers. Nearly 8,500 people contracted the disease globally and more than 800 died, including 33 in Singapore where the government imposed strict health controls.

The World Health Organization declared the global outbreak contained on July 5.

The kit will be available to hospitals in the next two months, Genelabs said. It will not be sold to the public.

"A certain amount of control is needed in diagnosis for SARS," said Genelabs general manger Noel Ho. "If it's a rapid test for pregnancy, that's fine. But not for infectious diseases."

The Singapore researchers also developed a SARS test that can produce results for a large number of samples in 90 minutes. The so-called Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) tests normally take up to two-and-a-half hours.

Guan Ming, product development manager at Genelabs, said test samples from more than 70 SARS patients were used and compared with those of healthy people to develop the test kit.

Both kits, which are now being evaluated in China and Hong Kong where SARS hit hard, can only detect the virus after the sixteenth day of infection, but the researchers hope to develop a test for the virus in the first seven days.

Some medical experts say the virus may be dormant and could return this winter.
