Father Gets Into Pyjama Fight

Source: Winnipeg Free Press
Date: 24/03/2004

The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the father of two Ecole Provencher students is escorting his daughters to class and ordering them not to budge from their desks if teachers try to suspend them for wearing pyjama pants.

“I told the teacher, if you're going to remove my kids from the school, you're going to have to do it with a policeman,” said Jim Ealing, whose two daughters received in-school suspensions last week. He finally pulled them out of school March 19, a move that he said showed the girls how to stand up for themselves.

Bernice Porter's daughter was also banned last week from wearing pyjama pants. She and Mr. Ealing said they plan on demanding that Louis Riel school board trustees either allow the pyjama pants or ban them division-wide along with sweat pants, cargo pants and similar comfortable clothing.

Louis Riel School Division superintendent Terry Borys said the issue is not about banning pyjama pants, but about schools drawing the line on what clothing is appropriate and about dealing with families that choose not to work with the school for the benefit of their kids.

“We have a role to play in showing kids what is appropriate to wear, and I think we've been afraid to do that in the last few years,” he said. “We need a public education system to say 'time out, this is what's acceptable and what's not acceptable', and we shouldn't be afraid to say that.”

I saw this on the national TV news last night.  They showed the pants can be purchased at clothing stores and are not sold as PJ's.  It's some new trend.

MzWings what's new on this issue?

I've seen young girls wearing these on the school grounds.  Last year, my daughter bought a pair for herself and me.  Hers shrunk and I have them now.  They're very comfortable - cute.  But they are certainly NOT for wearing outside the home, let alone at school.

Very tacky, kids, very tacky!

Pyjama pants may lead to dress code

Thu Mar 25 2004

By Nick Martin

THE Ecole Provencher pyjama pants controversy may inspire Louis Riel School Division to hold an extensive community consultation to set a division-wide school dress code policy, school board chair Louise Johnston said yesterday.

If parents would like to explore an actual code, that would be an amazing community consultation," Johnston said.

"This might actually be a positive outcome of this issue, that we tighten up," and see how "rigid" students, parents and the community want to be on dress codes, Johnston said.

Three junior high girls were suspended last week for
wearing pyjama pants to Ecole Provencher last week. They're back in class this week, still wearing the pants while the division tries to quell the controversy.

But the girls' parents will be appearing at the April 6 school board meeting to demand that the division either back off or ban all loose and comfortable clothing, such as track suits, sweat pants, and cargo pants.

I dunno, that's part of what being a teenager is all about.  I have no problem with them wearing them.  If they cover up everything important, then it doesn't matter to me what material they are made from.

I find them very comfy also. I personally don't wear them outside (other than to grab the papr from the driveway) but I see them all over the place. I think that they are very similar to the "zuba" or "hammer" pants of the 80's. Just another trend.

I have a much bigger issue with them wearingpants below their waist line than this. If someone wants to take issue with something then this is it!

Students defy school rules; wear pyjama pants to class

Wed Mar 24 2004
By Nick Martin

Ealing drops off Cassandra at school wearing pyjama pants.

TWO defiant pre-teens wore pyjama pants to Ecole Provencher yesterday while their parents dared Louis Riel School Division to suspend the kids again.

(I absolutely do not agree with these parents who are backing the preteens defiance.  These pants are pj's regardless what "dept" they're in.  Someday, when the kids pull this defiant attitude to get their way at home, the girls will throw this ordeal back in the parents faces.  It's no wonder there are so many problems with our kids today.  [Yes, I know Confusius said the same thing waaay back when. :laff: ])

Twelve-year-olds Tiara Smook and Cassandra Ealing wore the pants -- which they say are loose and comfortable fleece pants, and which the school says are pyjamas -- even though they were suspended last week.

Tiara said her mother, Bernice Porter, had instructed her, if she got suspended again, to "stay at my desk unless the police come."

Louis Riel School Division appeared to be looking the other way yesterday in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, which will come to a head when Porter and Cassandra's father, Jim Ealing, go before trustees April 6.

They'll demand the school division either back off or ban a wide variety of loose clothing such as sweatpants and track suits right across the division, Ealing said yesterday.  (Sure - they could.  Maybe make it a requirement to wear uniforms would suit them better?

Louis Riel superintendent Terry Borys said yesterday he had instructed Provencher principal Suzanne McCarthy not to talk to the media.

"The students and teachers have to get back to learning," Borys said.

"There's been bullying of teachers in the school," he said, declining to elaborate or comment any further.

Borys said the division will not be talking about what -- if anything -- happens inside Ecole Provencher to any child wearing pyjama pants.

Borys said the division has been receiving many phone calls and e-mails from across the city, applauding Ecole Provencher for taking a stand on what is acceptable in student dress. But Provencher parents have also expressed concern about the unwanted attention the school is getting, he said.

Ealing said he did not expect Cassandra to have any trouble in school yesterday. The division and the board want to keep things as quiet as possible, he said. "The school board wants to take a little heat off," he said.

Ealing has left it up to Cassandra to decide what to do if the teacher or principal orders her to leave class. "She knows she's supposed to stay in school," Ealing said. If Cassandra gets an in-school suspension, "I'll come back and see them, I guess."

Ealing said his other daughter, Hayley, was at the dentist yesterday morning, but would not be wearing pyjama pants when she got to school, because she chooses each morning to dress as she sees fit.

"She's going to be wearing skin-tight white jeans, which are legit to come to school in," he said.

Cassandra said teachers ignored the pyjama pants that the three girls wore Monday, but made other girls wearing the pants in support of the trio change into jeans.

Cassandra said the pyjama pants are fleece pants that are sold without a top, and are not meant to be worn as pyjamas. The girls do not roll down the waistband to expose their midriffs, Cassandra said.

Porter said she was not expecting trouble yesterday.

"The whole point of school is to be educated, not to be playing games," she said.

Porter said pyjama pants are fine "as long as the kids are covered."

Satin pyjamas, or any kind of short clothing, is not acceptable, she said: "I don't think little girls should be showing their bodies." Several kids waiting in the schoolyard for classes to begin yesterday yelled at reporters to leave Ecole Provencher alone.

"Give our principal a break -- it's her first year," said one girl.

Elsewhere in the city, most officials of school divisions have not returned calls about their own policies on pyjama pants.

Pembina Trails superintendent Paul Moreau said principals make the call locally. "There's generally a test with respect to modesty," said Moreau, who speculated that pjyama-like pants could be acceptable, but actual sleepwear would not be appropriate for school.

But, said Moreau, "I'm concerned how the parent is handling this matter. That's way out of line, in my opinion."

I so agree teaching our teens to be defiant toward authrity is so wrong and it will blow up in their (parents) faces when these same kids defy them!

In the same token, it's important for teens to rebel.  It's like a 2 year old being a stubborn butthead...it's just part of the natural progression of life in asserting independence and defining who you are.  Rebellion is normal and natural.

After seeing a pair of these pants, and seeing how much it does cover, I have no objections to kids wearing them and I'd back my kid up too.  They sure cover a lot more than low rider pants and thongs which was the trend last year.  I'd be a lot more embarassed if my kid stepped out in those.

This is a trend here too. Mostly in Highschool as far as I know.

Honestly I dont really think its should be such a big issue with school authorities. As you said here,  extra low waiste line pants are a bigger concern, to me anyway.

There are two students from my school who were asked to leave their "on the job training" last semester because they were not dressing properly for work. Their boss said he has had enough of their g strings after 2 weeks. These "women" were 19 yo. Couldnt they see it was not suitable to wear low waiste line pants at WORK ?

If the pj's pants are hiding the undies... I say Go for it ! Roll Eyes

I worry more about pants being worn just above the knee more than PJ's that cover all!

they are really making a big ordeal out of this?

I used to wear men's pajama pants all the time.  It was soo comfortable and looked really cute.

In my opnion, they need to be able to express themselves somehow, nocropped shirts, no tight jeans, no shorts,  etc etc.  SO many other things are banned, are pajama pants really hurting anything? Like David said, much better than showing three quarters of their body's off.
