A few years ago my husband came out of the store laughing out loud.
A man and woman were selecting a card,
he said to her, "its git dissun, yount tew?"
We had a good laugh Wink  .....and YES, we do have a drawl Grin

For our non-North American members:

"Let's get this one, you want to?"

What I detest is when Hollywood actors try to imitate Southern accents.  99% of the time, they don't get it right and it just sounds degrading.

Here's one I read today in Down Home Magazine:

Well, if'n that don't beat th' bugs a fightin.  (unexpected event)

No, we really don't talk like this but there are those raised in the country who do.  They don't know any better and they grew up hearing and speaking like this.  Most of us just have a drawl.

We say dawg and not dog.  I could think of countless others but you get the picture.   Smiley

The most misleading word in southernese is "yonder".  My MIL said things were "just down yonder", and it could mean a block or 10 miles.   I never trusted it after we went on a search for something to eat at a bbq "just down yonder", WITH a carload of hungry kids.  After that time, I asked, "how far in miles" EVERY time she said yonder.

How do I sound when I tawk Luci?  Grin (Addams I think we have some sort of weird mental link... I can often heah you acallin' me.  Wink )

No, the word "dog" doesn't rhyme with "jog" in the south.  Wink And LL is right, there are several very distinct accents, depending where you are. Waaay down yonder in south AL, around near Mobile, or Camden, you'll still hear the auld saouth spoken. My mother has a bit of that in her speech. But in the rural areas you'll hear all the funny things in this thread, almost like another language. And if y'all ain't frum round heah, I'll betcha a fiver that you won't be able to translate. :laff:

In my experience, most people like to hear "Southern" spoken nowadays. When I was in NYC last year, a NY cop and I spent about fifteen minutes trying to get each other to ... well, tawk. :laff: I personally love accents, they're interesting and fun. One of my sons in law is from London, and we really have a good time. OY!

The funny event that happened to me ws being in North Carolina and one of the locals telling me what an accent I have and how much they like to hear me taulk Grin

When I've called Deb to get news on Wings, Quinn likes to talk with me for he likes the accent.
Oh My goo'ess, ah do thank ah maght have the vapors heah on this vury veranda Roll Eyes

LB, you know I can translate every sy lil a bil.
Then there are those who have the audacity to make fun of us.   gets them Wink

What if you have to talk to non-southerners? Do you change your accents?

When I first met my SIL, from New Orleans, I always had to ask her to repeat what she said, then I'd laugh, but I'd hug her too.  She had a weird accent even for NO.  She would "burl" water, and pour it down the "zink".   A car needed gas and "url" to run.  She soon started asking me to repeat what I said and laugh at me!

My other SIL was from Alabama, and I loved her smooth as velvet 'bama accent.  She could say anything and still sound like a southern belle.

Why thankee. (since I'm from bama too.  Grin )
The Nawleons accent is laced with the French accent. Here in Bama it's laced with Irish. (for example the dropping of "g's" - good mornin'.

No Genius, of course we don't change our accents when we talk to people from other parts of the country, any more than you would change yours when you talk to us.  And you do have one, everyone does.  Wink

My ex had a friend from the Bronx and I couldn't understand a word he said. I learned one phrase pretty quick though - "I todja tootree tymes". :laff:
