Hi,  Mr Mum is taking a nap and I am so sleepy.  Our guests went out to sightsee for a couple of hours, thank goodness!  The 2 year old has torn the house up, poor Skippy has to stay in his cage because the 9yr old tells the baby Skip is going to eat him!!! So he screams every time Skip looks at him!  etc. etc.
Took Mr.Mum to the surgeon and he had to drain some blood blisters and took the nail off the 2nd toe, and ordered a MRI on Monday to see how much damage will have to be repairedon the big toe, if it can.  He mentioned something about losing the toe.  We are both praying he won't!  Poor Mr.Mum is missing the feel of his driver in his hands!  He is starting to ask for his pain Rx occasionally.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers--they are much needed and appreciated

Gosh, I hope removing a toe isn't necessary.   What did the xrays look like?  I hope Mr. Mum gets the treatment he needs and he starts mending.

Oh My!  Sending good wishes and prayers for a full recovery to Mr. Mum.
Tell him to relax, he can take time off from his driver, his toe needs to heal!

As for the 9 yr old teasing the 2 yr old, well that's another thread, isn't it?
Stay cool Mum, take one of Mr Mum's pain pills Wink

Mum - I hope the Mr is better today.  Make sure he keeps his foot elevated and takes his pain meds.  And you take good care of yourself, too!  (There's nothing worse than a man in pain and they can certainly run you ragged if you let them!)

Today he said his foot didn't hurt.
He was up several times during the night and each time I was worried he would fall, using the crutches and being sleepy.  He just asked for some pain Rx before I change his dressing.  There is some seepage through the dressing and probably the gauze will stick to the area where the nail was removed.  Maybe I should have a drink before I do it?..... The big toe of his right foot is the one that got crushed and the tendon was severed.  An MRI on Monday will tell the surgeon what he will be able to fix.
It looks awful!  There wasn't as much bleeding from the area with stitches yesterday, just some seeping.  It is very red, and some black and purple to add some contrast, but the temperature and feeling is normal.
The second toe has an open fracture, bone through skin, and is almost black and very swollen.  The toenail has been removed and that aea is bright red and still bleeding.  It is very painful when I change the bandage and clean the area, and we try to joke about my "soft, gentle" ministrations while I hurt him.   Cry
He hates not being able to do anything, and I see the longing as he watches the golfers go by on the 14th fairway.
He thanks you all for your prayers and good thoughts.   Smiley

Mum, I read each update to Mr L, we both cringe at what you and Mr Mum are going through.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you that his toe can be saved.
Keep the faith and don't let them take that toe at first opinion!

Been so busy!
The MRI showed that the tendon had just creased  and looked severed on Xray, but it is very swollen and inflamed, so no surgery on the big toe.  But the bones are in little pieces so he is not supposed to walk so that these bones can heal and knit together.
The 2nd toe is worse than it looked on Xray, the bones at the last 1/3 of the toe are pulverized (the surgeons words) and must also have rest to heal.
He said a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks to fully heal barring any complications.  So hopefully I can keep him from going too fast and staying off the foot.  It is going to be a rough road ahead!!!  Undecided
Thank you for everyones concern!

It was easy for me, LL.
I told Mr Luci if he wanted to spend all that time, pain and money to NOT listen to the doctor, then he could be his own nurse!  We had a 'short discussion' on doing what the doctor told him to do!
I will say he has been very good about doctor's orders, for he
thinks now he willl have a better handicap on the golf course.   Roll Eyes

Mum, I do wish for Mr Mum the very best complete recovery.  Since you're a nurse you know the importance of him doing as told.  The only factor weighing in here is, he doesn't!  Men are very stubborn creatures and love to say,
"it won't hurt me if I do this just once!" Oh yes, it will!  And to have bones in pieces, I would think will take every bit as long as his doctor has told  him.

Good Luck Mum, we're pulling for you on this one Cool

He says they don't hurt.  I've caught him walking without his crutches when I come in from walking the dog!
I told him he's a grown man, and I'm not going to be a cop keeping him off the foot.  But I remember the doc mentioning a cast, so I may suggest a walking cast when we go this Thursday since he doesn't like the crutches!

He isn't on in a walking cast now?  Oh my yes, clue the doctor about him
walking without it.  Next week he'll be heading for the golf course Roll Eyes

He may say now it doesn't hurt but down the road when it hasn't healed properly, you'll be the one to listen to all his whinning and wailing.  Not recovfering as told could land hi in surgery!  Or what if a piece of that crushed bone gets into his blood stream.  He is walking in dangerous territory.  Good Luck Mum Wink

I guess it's hard to splint or immobilize toes.  Even a walking cast has open toes, doesn't it?  Does he have one of those shoes with velcro?  You see them on foot surgery patients all the time.

Well, this guy must be born under a lucky star!!
Went to the surgeon today (on crutches Grin) but fessed up to not using them all last week.  X-Rays were done, and it showed that there is healing started on both toes, and in the proper position.
The doc took his stitches out, and gve him a lecture on doing the right thing or he will have problems for the rest of his life.
But, he said he is so healthy and young (64 Shocked) with help, the toes will heal.
So, as long as he wears the special shoe, he can walk without the crutches, if he is careful.  And he doesn't have to go back for 2 weeks.
He also said how lucky Mr. Mum is,  because he really thought the toes would be lost.

We think it was because of all the prayers and good wishes that have been sent his way!    Thank You.

We went to the doctor today and got some really good news.
Mr. Mum has been really good with with his foot, and is down to 7 cigarettes a day.
The doctor was surprised how great the toes look, and said he has never had a patient heal so fast!  Even though the bones will need another 8 weeks to completely heal, the tissue looks very healthy and it shouldn't be long for the scabs to fall off.  The toenail that he lost looks like it is starting to grow back.
He can wear a shoe if it feels comfortable and drive.   Cool
He says there is no pain but feels it is too soon to return to the golf course, but might ride in the cart a couple of times without his clubs, and take his time working up to 18 holes.
We want to thank all of you for your kind thoughts and prayers!  Smiley

Yes, you could say he is fully recovered.  He did get a release two weeks ago today to play golf and do whatever he wants.
He does go back the first week of May for a final check-up.

There is still a bit of swelling and tenderness on the top
of his foot where the big incision was, but so far so very good Cool

He was a very good patient.  When these doctors tell you to stop smoking, they do mean it!  The bones heal better!  Wink

Yes, Mr. Mum is so much better!
He is resuming his little "retirement" job one day a week.  He drives one of those little busses, bringing travelers to and from the airport to a car leasing agency.  Today he picked up a new convertible from Ft. Lauderdale, bringing it back Ft. Myers to the rental agency.
He still hasn't played golf, because the doctor said the bones are still soft like clay and he doesn't want to hurt the healing process.
He is down to 6 cigarettes a day!
After a rocky start, he has become an extremely good patient!  Tongue

I am so glad to hear that he's cut down his smoking.  It would really help his recovery now and later if he could cut down by 6 more a day Wink  but this is atremendous news and I am so so so very pleased with the news about these two guys getting back on their feet.

That sounds like a lovely little retirement job.  I would enjoy that myself.  Don't let any of us snow birds step on his foot though Wink

X-rays, today, showed 95% healing of the bones and only a thin fracture line left in the big toe!  The scabbing was all removed, and the suture line looks great and the area where the toenail was removed on the second toe is clean and almost healed completely.
He just has a little discomfort in the removed toenail area, and is trying to walk more normal, without the limp to protect the injured area.
The doctor is so pleased with his recovery and said unless he drops anything else on the toes, he doesn't have to come back!!

We are stuck at the 6 cigarettes a day, but after smoking for over 50 years, this is a good place to be stuck for awhile.
He has only stumbled once last week, when we were in Miami Beach having lunch with Chip.    It WAS a long drive! Grin
Thanks to all of your for your prayers and well wishes.
We KNOW that is what helped us to get through this so well.

Well he's a lucky dog even with the five extra strokes!

. . . . this damn "honey-do" list of mine is keeping me from my task of sending golf balls to the woods.   Wink

Oh well, maybe next week.
