I've been to some public restrooms that are spotlessly clean, like the one in the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, and others that are disgusting. Therefore, I can't really make a generalization about how clean public restrooms actually are.

I used to work in the hygeine industry and what I learnt scared the hell out of me! I refuse point blank to ever use a public restroom......no matter how advanced they become with automatic doors, soap dispensers etc I still refuse to enter one!
 
I do you know what....when I was a hygiene consultant part of my job was to inspect male and female restrooms and I'm sorry to say that the female toilets were always left the dirtiest!!!!

I didn't mean to give the impression that all public restrooms in the US are dirty.  Some are kept scrupulously clean, and others.....are not.  It's just that the ones that are not that leave the strongest impression.
