'Four Weddings' director eyes 'Potter IV'

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- British filmmaker Mike Newell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral") is on board to direct the fourth installment of the "Harry Potter" franchise, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

The Warner Bros. project is due to begin shooting next April in England with a late 2005 release date pegged.

The announcement comes as filming is currently underway on the third film in the series -- "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" -- under the direction of helmer Alfonso Cuaron. According to the studio, the production schedules for "Azkaban" and "Goblet" will overlap, making it "infeasible" for the same director to oversee both projects.

"We're really happy to bring Mike on board to direct this movie," Warner Bros. president of production Jeff Robinov said. "He has the ability to get tremendous performances from his actors, and handles drama and comedy equally well."

Newell becomes the first Briton to direct one of the films based on British author J.K. Rowling's "Potter" series, which is entirely set in the United Kingdom. David Heyman is producing "Goblet" from a script to be penned by Steve Kloves. American Chris Columbus directed the first two.

"As audiences have become more familiar with both the books and the movies, there has been an increasing challenge to continue to develop each of these characters and to make their world real on the screen," said Newell, who described the series as an "enormous undertaking."

Newell is currently prepping for the December release of his most recent directorial outing, Revolution Studios' "Mona Lisa Smile," starring Julia Roberts. His other credits include "Donnie Brasco" and "Into the West."
