Best Picture

I'm sure that the Hurt Locker was a fine film with great acting, but I don't believe it deserved best picture over Avatar.  It was a box office failure that hardly anyone I know went to see.  It's gained ground in DVD sales since it was nominated, but compare that to the box office success and word of mouth that Avatar has earned.  I know Avatar wasn't the most amazing script ever. It was really a visually beautiful chick flick with enough explosions to keep most guys happy.  However, I think the Academy is out of touch with the American viewing public and that there is no way that Hurt Locker was more beloved or awe striking, let alone ticket sales and repeat ticket sales, than Avatar.  Which of those movies did people in your world say, "You have to see this!"

One question about Avatar, I haven't seen it, but would you really recommend it? I haven't seen it because to me, it looks like it's overrated.

I would recommend it, and have had tons of people say to me "Have you seen it?" or "You've got to see this!"  It was stunning to watch, and people loved it.

It's worth seeing - and spectacular in 3D, but while it was visually spectacular, the story line was predictable.  I've not see Hurt Locker, not the type movie I typically watch, so hard for me to judge.  I did go see Crazy Heart on Sunday afternoon, and I'd have to say, Jeff Bridges was most deserving!

I watched Hurt Locker and thought it was okay.  Was it better than all of the other films?  I don't think so.  I think it probably won due to it's military theme.  I was actually surprised that "my kind" of movies was actually nominated for Best Picture.  My movies tend to get picked for Best Special Effects or Sound Editing.

I agree that Avatar should have won Best Picture. A movie that is groundbreaking should have been rewarded with an Oscar. 50 years from now, Avatar will be in the movie history books while only a few hardcore film buffs will remember The Hurt Locker.

I agree..I understand why people would not pick Avatar for best pic. I understand the argument, but based on crowd reaction and the nature of the filming, I still believe it was by far the better picture over all.
