From TV Guide

Pier Pressure
Amazing Race 5
(9:30 pm/ET, CBS)
When the finale of Amazing Race 4 aired last August, the biggest question wasn't which team would win the $1 million first-place prize; it was whether there would be a fifth edition in 2004. The low-rated globe-trotting series pulled in a mere 8 million viewers each week and was in danger of being canceled, even though it was CBS's youngest-skewing show. But then a made-for-TV miracle occurred the next month. The show won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality/Competition Program, beating out heavy favorites American Idol and Survivor. The following week CBS picked up the series for another season.

I'm pleased to report that the best reality show on TV is in top form with tonight's thrilling 90-minute opener. The 11 teams embark on their 29-day, 70,000-mile around-the-world adventure from the Santa Monica pier and head off to Uruguay. Tension mounts from the opening seconds as one team member stumbles, cuts himself badly and goes to a hospital for stitches. The injury threatens to prevent the team from making its initial flight. Once in South America the teams are forced to carry 55 pounds of raw beef a half mile to a local butcher shop and later jump off the roof of a hotel on a zip line that leads down into a swimming pool. The ending is a nail biter that finds teams who thought they were ahead learning instead that they were way behind and vice versa.

Casting is the key to any reality series and Amazing Race 5 again sports a strong field. The participants range from 26-year-old identical twin sisters to an older widowed couple who met on the Internet, to a Big Brother runner up and her boyfriend to 27-year-old cousins, one of whom has a form of dwarfism. The cousins, Charla and Mirna, provide the night's biggest laughs as they attempt to carry that aforementioned side of beef. I'm pulling for these spunky gals to go the distance. My early pick for who will be this year's villains goes to Marshall and Lance, burly brothers who own a restaurant together in Dallas. A little of this brusque duo goes a long way.

To keep the race fresh, two new twists have been added. The first is "yield," in which a team may elect to force another team behind them to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time. A team may only use the yield once during the entire race, but there is no limit to the number of times each team may be forced to yield. The second change, hinted at in the opener but not fully explained, will make the race more difficult for a team that comes in last during non-elimination legs of the competition.

One of the pleasures of viewing The Amazing Race is to watch the participants as they visit exotic locations and interact with the locals. This season the show makes additional stops in Argentina, Russia, Egypt, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, India, New Zealand and the Philippines.

But as wonderful as those far-flung places are, there is another locale that is even more exciting. And that place is Saturday nights this fall on CBS. That's where AR6 will air. For a series that was on the brink of oblivion to have two new seasons within a few months of each other is, well, amazing. And that's great news for Race fans. — Tim Holland
