The People Choose Hobbits, "Greek"
by Josh Grossberg
Dec 4, 2002, 2:45 PM PT

Apparently Americans are suckers for Hobbits and Greeks.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and My Big Fat Greek Wedding lead the list of nominees for Favorite Movie at the 29th annual People's Choice Awards, it was announced today.

The popularity contest cum awards show doles out prizes out based on the Gallup-polled opinions of average Joes and Janes--as opposed to Industry shmoozers meeting behind closed doors.

And old habits die hard.

So while the National Board of Review opts to honor art-house fare like The Hours, the people are once again choosing from a usual-suspects list of faves. Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson will square off in the Best Movie Actors category--just like they did at the last People's Choice Awards.

Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock are competing for Favorite Movie Actress for the umpteenth time, but at least they'll have some new-blood competition from reigning Oscar winner and Bond babe Halle Berry.

Meanwhile, Frodo and his Fellowship will do battle with the year's biggest hit, Spider-Man, and the indie monster My Big Fat Greek Wedding for Favorite Motion Picture.

In other non-shocking news, the vox populi likes Lord of the Rings, Red Dragon and M. Night Shyamalan's Signs in the Favorite Motion Picture Drama race. Viewers may recall that Shyamalan was also the people's choice in 1999, when The Sixth Sense won both film and drama honors.

In the Favorite Comedy category, MGM's Barbershop will face off against Greek Wedding and Adam Sandler's Mr. Deeds.

Tube-wise, the masses gave yet another vote of confidence to Friends for Favorite Comedy Series, where it's up against another NBC Must-See, Will and Grace, and CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond. Perennial contenders on the drama side, ER and Law & Order, are challenged by television's most watched show, CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, now in its second season.

The Eye network's spinoff, CSI: Miami, is up for Favorite New TV Drama, opposite the WB's Everwood and CBS' Presidio Med. Fox's The Bernie Mac Show and Cedric The Entertainer Presents will battle ABC's 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter for the Favorite New TV Comedy crown.

Longtime Friends costars Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc scored noms for Favorite Male and Female TV Performer, respectively.

For the second straight year, there will also be a Favorite Reality Program. Apparently, the people prefer Fear Factor, The Real World: Las Vegas and Survivor: Thailand to Ozzy and his omnipresent clan, as MTV's The Osbournes were dissed in the category.

'N Sync, the Dixie Chicks and Creed are vying for Favorite Musical Group, while divas Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Faith Hill duke it out for Best Female Performer. And, in one of the most bizarre races, country star Alan Jackson stares down hip-hopsters Eminem and Nelly for the title of Best Male Performer.

The hardware will be handed out January 12 in a ceremony hosted by Tony Danza and airing live on CBS.

Here's the complete list of nominees for the 29th annual People's Choice Awards:

  • Male Television Performer: Matt LeBlanc, Bernie Mac, Ray Romano
  • Female Television Performer: Jennifer Aniston, Patricia Heaton, Debra Messing
