CBS Rolls with Second 'Rock Star'

Wednesday, January 18, 2006
11:45 AM PT

A second season of the summer series "Rock Star" is on its way to CBS, but the network hasn't decided which band will be searching for a new singer.

CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler confirmed Wednesday (Jan. 1Cool at the Television Critics Association midseason press tour that a second "Rock Star," produced by "Survivor" mastermind Mark Burnett, is in development for this summer. There's no word, yet, though, on the band that will follow the colon in the title, a la last year's "Rock Star: INXS."

Tassler says she's excited to bring the show back, noting that it "built a nice little buzz last summer." Although it wasn't a huge hit for CBS -- in fact, the "Real World"-style segments that formed part of the show were shipped to VH1 -- "Rock Star" slowly gained viewers over the course of its run, topping out at nearly 8 million viewers for its finale.

I think the new season will crash and burn.  I think the last season with INXS was a one-trick pony just because INXS had some good songs with a range from ballads, to rock/pop which is a good reproitoire to work with in the first place which made the show successful.

Now, what bands will there be to fill the spot.  Van Halen maybe?  They said no, but think about it. Van Halen has really heavy songs, and just doesn't have the all-around appeal to all audiences that INXS had.

It should be interesting to see who they can get this time around...some hair band from the 80's maybe? Van Halen at least has the depth of song...but who else is hunting for a lead?

Deek, I had heard about the possibility of Queen after last season ended.  I'm not a huge fan of theirs and can imagine it would be difficult to find the right person for them.  But you never know...

Even tougher, Red.  INXS had a baby boomer kind of an audience.  So many remember their songs.  Same with Queen.  But Nirvana? Now there's a show that would really lean towards the younger crowd.

I'm at a loss to even suggest anyone right now.

I really wouldn't mind who it is, as long as they have good singers on the show.  Wink

LL, would you be Modding it again? If you need any help, I'll volunteer for it now.

Yeah, it would be difficult to find the right singer for Queen.  After all, all the singers did pretty bad singing Queen, and for Mig,  it was definitely a nail in the coffin.

I don't think Nirvana would ever start again.  They have sort of a legacy, and I think it would be totally different to have a different singer.  Besides, Dave Grohl, the drummer, is doing a good job leading the Foo Fighters, and doing studio gigs drumming for Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails, so I don't think he would be interested.  And if Courtney Love had any say in any of it, she would defintely not allow that to happen!

Sure, Creed would be a good choice, but I thought Rob Thomas didn't officially quit MatchBox20, just doing some solo project on the side.

I was just thinking Red, you are right.

The other members of Creed started Alter Bridge, while Scott Stapp went solo.

Stone Temple Pilots

I would love that.  One of my favorite bands.  But they'd need somone really good to fit the presence/vocals/shoes of Scott Weiland.
