'I Wish I'd Voted for Myself' To Leave The island, Zoe Says During Interview

By: Greg Latimer (4/29/02)

Zoe Zanidakis of Monhegan Island still has one regret from her last day of participation in “Survivor: Marquesas”.

"I wish I'd voted for myself (to leave the island) on that last episode, because then it would have really been unanimous" Zoe told The Lincoln County News during a telephone interview. (The final vote was 7-1 against Zoe.)

"It was time to get out of the politics (on the island)," she said.

She admitted that never having seen an episode of “Survivor” before she applied for the show was a real handicap with her understanding of alliances, but she also described her actions in a much more personal way. And many of her reactions to the situation on the tropical island of Nuku Hiva were based partially on her life on Monhegan Island 12 miles off the coast of Lincoln County, Maine.

“I didn’t realize how negative some of the alliances could get,” she said.

“Living on Monhegan Island with only 60 people, we all have our differences,” Zoe said. “If you let that get too much in the way – it takes away from yourself and it makes you an unhappy person.”

As far as the emotions that ran so high in “Survivor: Marquesas” during her last episode, Zoe said, “The game’s a game, and I try not to let all that sort of stuff get too involved with what I want to do or what life’s really about.

“At that point, I just said, ‘enough is enough’,” she said with finality.

And in those final moments, she kept a secret to herself – her vote against John in the previous episode. Many “Suvivor” observers have speculated about how the so called “Maraamu-5” alliance would have voted had they known Zoe had been with them in voting against John.

“I guess it really wasn’t intentional,” Zoe said about keeping her vote a secret, explaining that she was still working out her relationships with the other players.

One of the relationships that became a focal point during the game was with Rob (the cocky construction worker). In a group photo taken of the new Soliantu tribe just before Rob was voted off, both Zoe and Rob appear to be sharing a pretty cozy embrace with each other. This was a bit of a surprise to some observers after Rob’s continual accusations regarding Zoe’s honesty.

“You know, I guess I’m just that type of person – I don’t get too involved with the politics of the game,” Zoe said. “Rob’s a good guy – he liked to stir the pot up and that was his way of, well, being Rob.”

Apparently, the same value for friendship may have come into play during the “Sea Legs” challenge, a balancing act on a floating raft that most Lincoln County locals thought captain Zoe would sail right through. During the challenge, Zoe apparently fell off the raft, and the immunity prize was won by Kathy – who many people thought would have been eliminated that episode.

Did Zoe “take a dive” on purpose? Her answer came in a single word: “Yeah.”

Why? “I really wanted to spend some more time with ‘Kath’ exploring the island,” Zoe admitted. “She’s a lot of fun and we had a great time.”

As far as the “kissing up” that Zoe was accused of during her final episode, she repsonded: “I’m not the kissing up type of person.”

She explained that she had made and repaired jewelry for many of the tribe members during her stay on Nuku Hiva, and that it was simply featured more in that episode.

As far as Zoe's plans for the future now that "Survivor" is almost in her past, Zoe has announced she will try a career in acting -- calling it a childhood dream.

While she hasn't received any offers yet, she is in the process of retaining agency representation in New York and Maine.

Zoe has mentioned in an interview posted on CBS.com that she would someday like to return to the Marquesas with her son and "someone special".

Asked to elaborate on who that "someone special" might be, Zoe was a bit coy. She acknowledged that there is "someone special", but declined to describe the person.

While she's in New York City, she's been making the rounds of shops and clubs between interviews.

One of her favorite hang outs in the city is a lounge called "Hogs and Heifers" that helps raise funds for breast cancer research -- where Zoe donated her bra to the cause.

She has also been dancing at the Lime Light, a techno club located in a gothic church building.

She'll have to tone down on tonight's (Monday) activites a bit, as she is scheduled for an appearance on the David Letterman Show. Asked if she looked forward to Letterman's dry wit, Zoe responded, "No problem -- I'm used to the dry wit of the fishermen on Monhegan Island."

An Acting Career?  whoa, I never saw that coming.  Also, this got me thinking that Kathy's bra might raise a fair bit of money   Lips Sealed
