LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Somewhere off the coast of Thailand, the first contestant in CBS' fifth edition of "Survivor" may already have been voted off the island.

The 16 contestants arrived on the island Tuesday (June 11) for the game's opening shots. They were accompanied by close to 200 locals and a fleet of fishing boats, the New York Post reports, citing news dispatches from Bangkok.

"Survivor: Thailand" is being filmed on Tarutao Island, a former prison colony that's now part of an offshore national park in the Southeast Asian nation. The island is home to a great deal of exotic wildlife, including poisonous snakes and wild buffalo.

Some controversy surrounded executive producer Mark Burnett's choice of the island for the game. Local officials were concerned that "Survivor" would damage the island, as the crew of the Leonardo DiCaprio movie "The Beach" did when it filmed in the area several years ago.

The Thai government agreed to allow the "Survivor" contestant on the island in exchange for the promise that they would not hunt the island's animals and not cut down any trees for shelter.

Bleah, I hope this isn't going to be like Africa, where they never go out (why bother, they can't hunt), and just sit around all the time eating corn mush/rice.

Nods, does not hurting the animals include the fish in the waters?  Does not cutting down trees for shelter mean they can use branches and leaves, or is shelted going to be provided to them?  Can they use trees that are already down, from the wind, or other natural causes?  Can they forage for edible plants?  I know you don't know the answers to this, but they're the questions that pop to my mind.  I wish MB would stay away from Preserves and other protected areas.  Let's leave the protected areas just that - protected, and lets play some REAL survivor in places where it's allowed.  All the places in the world and he could only come up with a protected area?

Yea Rhune, those questions popped into my mind as well.  I assume fish was ok, but your right, perhaps not.

One part of me likes when they can hunt, etc...but then there is another part of me that says if they kill a pig on TV Im probably gonna faint  Shocked

I know that S2 scene was about as much as I could take, what can I say, I love the animals, I would rather see the survivors go hungry  Grin

Hmm, I love animals and I certainly don't want to see them suffer any deliberate cruelties, but I'm not offended by the hunting and while I don't necessarily enjoy watching the actual kill, I like seeing how the players react to it and react to the food, and how it alters the tribe when someone like Michael Skupin brings home the bacon.  Grin

On a similar note, I know they said they weren't providing any food last time, and I liked that, but I was disappointed they didn't do the reward prize of chickens again.  I think the chickens make for some good filming as there's always a controvery surrounding them, and I don't think they were out of line since other rewards included picnic food or feasts, etc.

'SURVIVOR' Castaways Thai Up for Series #5

NY Post

THE latest group of castaways arrived in Thailand and began filming "Survivor 5" this week.

But unlike this past spring's contestants on the island of Nuku Hiva, near Tahiti - whose greatest threat (besides themselves) were nasty biting flies called No-Nos - the new batch of contestants may have to contend with a collection of venomous snakes, including King Cobras and temperamental wild buffalo that are known to charge at humans.

The fifth show is being filmed on Tarutao Island, a former prison-turned-national park located miles off the coast of the Asian kingdom.

The show's cast and crew arrived on Taruto's Sai Yaow Beach Tuesday in an elaborate opening segment that incorporated more than 27 fishing boats and 200 villagers from the local area, according to a Bankok news reports.

Concerned about the controversy that surrounded the filming of Leonardo DiCaprio's 2000 film "The Beach" on the Ko Tarutao Marine National Park, Tarutao National Park chief Suthichai Viriyakoson told the crew that hunting will not be allowed, and neither will destruction to the environment. That includes the chopping down of trees for shelter.

The show's producers reportedly irritated some locals when they requested that local fishing boats stay at least two kilometers away from the island while "Survivor" is being filmed.

I was watching the weather channel today and they did a piece about monsoon season around India and Malaysia (which got 9 inches of rain in one day) and Thailand happens to be between those two.. If they are filming already I think we are going to see a LOT of rain Smiley

According to this article  http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Cabana/1654/tarutao.htm the monsoon season is from May to October.  A pretty broad window of time.

If they filmed the opening shots on June 11/02 then I wonder what day the "game" began.  The game is approximately 7 weeks (a little less).   Seven weeks from June 11 is July 30.  So I can see the game being over by the end of July.

Thanks for tracking the weather Gabby - looks like we still have lots of time for a decent storm or two.  From the article I can see why this would be the perfect time for survivor to film.  In the non-monsoon season there are many migratory birds and turtles that lay eggs and nest.
