CBS Sets Launch Dates for New Shows

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Premiere week will live up to its title on CBS this fall.

The network will roll out all of its new series -- and nearly all of its returnees -- the week of Sept. 23, the official start of the 2002-03 TV season. A notable exception is "Survivor: Thailand," which will debut on Thursday, Sept. 19, giving the show a week to hook viewers before its main competitor, NBC's "Friends," has its season premiere.

The next installment of "The Amazing Race" will premiere Wednesday, Oct. 2, a week into the season.

CBS president and CEO Les Moonves made the announcement Monday (July 15) at the TV Critics Association press tour in Pasadena.

The Eye put most of its efforts into getting stronger shows on at 10 p.m. this season. Four of five weeknights -- all but Tuesday -- will have a new 10 p.m. series, and Moonves calls the new slate "the strongest group of 10 p.m. dramas we've had in years."

"It will obviously help the network, it will help our local news broadcasts and it will help David Letterman," Moonves says. Letterman has been vocal in the past about getting stronger lead-ins for his "Late Show."

Moonves also announced that Ving Rhames ("Mission: Impossible 2," "Sins of the Father" ) will play a recurring role as the U.S. attorney general on "The District" this season.

Here's what you do. Both you and your wife take that Thursday off. Spend the whole day together doing 10th anniversary stuff. Then make sure your at home in time for the start of Survivor. She'll be happy cause y'all spent the whole day together and you'll be happy cause you get to see the start of Survivor. Problem solved.

Survivor: Thailand set for Sept. 19

PASADENA, Calif. -- Fire up the Tiki lamps and break out the Doritos. Survivor: Thailand will premiere Sept. 19.

The date of the fifth chapter of the popular Survivor series was announced yesterday by CBS president and CEO Les Moonves, who worked the room with his usual aplomb, shrugging off questions about an upcoming Alliance Atlantis miniseries about Adoph Hitler and the scheduling of a Victoria's Secret lingerie special. "This isn't your grandmother's CBS," he said, referring to CBS's traditional older demos.

On the Survivor front, a Tournament of Champions edition, hinted at by executive producer Mark Burnett in January, is on the drawing board but won't air until after the 2002-2003 season at the earliest. "I think it would be a lot of fun to see Richard Hatch against Colby or whatever," said Moonves.

The veteran TV boss was upbeat after a season that saw CSI: Crime Scene Investigation emerge as TV's top drama, knocking ER off that perch for the first time in seven years.

New shows include a CSI spinoff, CSI: Miami, starring former NYPD Blue walkout David Caruso. Is Moonves milking the franchise? "There are no plans to do CSI: Toledo yet," joked Moonves. "I'm not going to do the Millionaire."

As for the Victoria's Secret special, why not, said Moonves. An hour of push-up bras may be just the lift CBS could use to lure young males.

Concerns about the Hitler bio were also dismissed. The movie will focus on Hitler's early years, a story most people are not very familiar with and "a timely subject about how bad guys get into power."

Moonves addressed the growing trend toward product placement on TV shows. It works best on reality shows like Survivor, Moonves feels, saying advertisers love it when contestants are rewarded with a beer and react like "it's the greatest liquid that they have ever had in their lives."

Working product placement into comedies and dramas will probably follow. It may be too early to start seeing Buffy eating M&Ms (as Moonves dismissed Sunday at the UPN sessions), but movies such as Minority Report, where product placements abound, are probably the tip of the iceberg. "If Steven Spielberg can do it, we can do it," said Moonves.

Just don't look for too many product placements on shows like CSI, or as Moonves said, "how do you do an autopsy and have a diet coke next to it?"

Other news from the CBS sessions:
**CBS may move their Grammy telecast in response to ABC's plans to host the Academy Awards Feb. 29, a month earlier than usual (and into the February sweeps).

**Survivor: Thailand's after-party will likely be hosted once again by Rosie O'Donnell. "She knows more about the show than I do," said Moonves.
