'Survivor' golf outing will be a challenge

This is a guy who weathered "Survivor," wrestling dragons and eating live porcupines and whatever the heck else they did in the Australian Outback. If Mike Skupin puts together a charity golf outing, it's not just going to be a stroll down the fairway.
On one hole, the players will shoot flaming arrows -- probably not at each other, but then again, I didn't ask. On another hole, an old Toyota will be squatting a few hundred yards from the tee.
Nail it with your drive and you win a day's free ride in a luxury car. Miss it and you can take out your frustration with a baseball bat at $10 a whack.
Not only that, you may be sharing a cart with one of Skupin's "Survivor" buddies. Or if golf's not your cup of porcupines, you can kick back with some "Survivor" survivors at a downtown Detroit nightclub and watch the debut of "Survivor: Thailand."
It's all part of a three-stage fund-raiser for Skupin's fledgling nonprofit, Victory Over Addiction, starring Michiganians Keith Famie and Clarence Black, Outback champion Tina Wesson and another two dozen refugees from the grandpappy of reality shows.
Stage I is the premiere party at Space on Sept. 19. Stage II is the Survivor Celebrity Golf Outing at the Captain's Club at Woodfield in Grand Blanc on Sept. 20. Stage III is a kids-vs.-Survivors field day on Sept. 21 at a local high school to be determined.
"It's been quite the challenge coordinating this thing," says Skupin, 40, of White Lake. But apparently he and the other alumni like to get together, and a charity event seemed more productive than another wilderness slumber party.
For ticket information, stay tuned. But first, here's a word about hunger, ice skating, a 20-foot refrigerated cube truck and an important life lesson for a 16-year-old in Birmingham.

THE LESSON Stefanie Horowitz learned was this: Lugging home $1,200 in coins and small crumpled bills is a lot harder than collecting it in the first place.
Horowitz, a junior at Groves High, started raising money for Forgotten Harvest at school last spring. She enlisted 30 or so friends into the Bucket Brigade, collecting spare change in hallways and lunch lines and giving out stickers of a cartoon truck called Harvey the Harvester.
With that money safely sorted and delivered, she and an encouragingly large group of local students called Kids Coalition to Prevent Hunger are onto something bigger -- Skating to Stop Starvation, an ice show Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Birmingham Ice Sports Arena.
Under the direction of Horowitz and her friend Courtney Healy, dozens of teenagers took it upon themselves to contact skating clubs, organize the show, design a flier, stuff envelopes, design an invitation, stuff more envelopes, speak to crowds of potential supporters, hustle merchants and post posters.
Sunday, they will take tickets, run a silent auction, serve food and do whatever else needs to be done, including skate. The goal is to buy a truck for Forgotten Harvest, which collects surplus perishable food from restaurants and such and delivers it to emergency food providers.
The performers will include former world champ Yuka Sato, the Detroit Skating Club's Team Elan and lots of other people who skate better than most of us ever dreamed of.
Horowitz is not in that group. "I took lessons for maybe a half a year," she says. "I wasn't so good." But she has other strengths, and not just the kind you develop hauling dimes and quarters.
