'Survivor' Castaways To Be Revealed Thursday Wed, Aug 14, 2002 05:29 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - CBS will introduce the latest batch of "Survivor" contestants Thursday morning (Aug. 15) on "The Early Show." The 16 contestants were dropped on an island off the coast of Thailand for the fifth installment of the hit reality franchise. Filming began in mid-June, and if producers kept to the 39-day schedule set by previous "Survivors," would have wrapped in late July. The game's host, Jeff Probst, will introduce the players and also take "Early Show" viewers on a tour of the game's locale, a prison colony-turned-national park called Tarutao Island. The choice of Tarutao caused some controversy in Thailand, where local officials were concerned that the players and dozens of crew members could spoil the island's environment. Thai officials faced a similar problem when the movie "The Beach," starring environmental crusader Leonardo DiCaprio, caused damage to the island during its shoot several years ago. The government granted access to the "Survivor: Thailand" crew in exchange for a promise that the island's wildlife would not be hunted and no trees would be cut down for use as shelters. "Survivor: Thailand" is scheduled to premiere Thursday, Sept. 19, a week ahead of its primary competition, NBC's "Friends."
