Meet the 'Survivor: Texas' -- er, 'Thailand' -- Castaways Thu, Aug 15, 2002 10:40 AM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The casting people at CBS must have been in a Lone Star state of mind when they finalized the contestant pool for "Survivor: Thailand." Six of the 16 contestants, introduced Thursday (Aug. 15) on "The Early Show," have ties to Texas. Four of them -- Penny Ramsey, Erin Collins, Jake Billingsley and Jed Hildebrand -- live there now, and two others, Jan Gentry and Clay Jordan, were born there. The group includes a teacher, a restaurant owner, a used-car salesman, a New York City cop and a Navy swim instructor. Those not from Texas hail from places as far-flung as Middletown, R.I., and Quartz Hill, Calif. The players, who spent 39 days in June and July on an island off the coast of Thailand, are slightly older than the "Marquesas," contestants, with an average age of 35.4 to the previous game's 34.8. Five "Thailand" contestants are over 40, and seven are under 30. Texas has been good to reality show contestants. Texan Colby Donaldson came in second on "Survivor: The Australian Outback," and two of "American Idol's" top four finalists -- Kelly Clarkson and Nikki McKibbin -- also call the Lone Star state home. The fifth "Survivor" is scheduled to premiere Thursday, Sept. 19.
