EMAIL THIS STORY British Reality Contestants May Sue Producers Mon, Aug 19, 2002 08:24 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A handful of former contestants on the British version of "Big Brother" and other shows are considering a lawsuit against producers for portraying them in a poor light. One such case has already been successful: Ron Copsey, a contestant on the "Survivor"-like "Castaway," won 16,000 pounds (about $24,400) in damages from the BBC and the show's producer, Lion TV, after claiming footage was edited to make it appear that he threw a chair at another contestant. Mark Stephens, a libel solicitor in London, tells the Independent newspaper that "between seven and nine" former reality-show contestants have inquired about suing producer Endemol Entertainment. Stephens says the ex-players believe that "selective editing" of the shows has made them look bad and damaged their careers and personal lives. "It's clear to me they've all been damaged," Stephens says. At least one former contestant, however, isn't buying the idea. "They are just being wimps," says Andy Davidson, who was on the first British edition of "Big Brother." "They should get on with it. It's history now."
