Producer to let Survivor die?

By BILL BRIOUX, TORONTO SUN

HOLLYWOOD -- Will Survivor: All Stars be the last Survivor? Executive producer Mark Burnett shocked critics yesterday at the network press tour by hinting that it could be All Stars and out for the Survivor franchise.

Survivor: All Stars launches Feb. 1, immediately following the Super Bowl on CBS. After that, another edition of the hit reality series "has not been ordered or discussed," insists Burnett.

This is the latest that CBS has waited to extend the series, said the producer. He suggested that the world's a more dangerous place and location scouting is getting tougher and tougher. He hinted that All Stars might be the cue to go out on top, both for him and the network.

Plus, he's beat. Survivor is a monster to produce. Burnett has projects at virtually every network. He no longer needs the money or the hassle. "Leslie would be very happy if I never left the editing bay," he said, referring to Leslie Moonves, the CEO of CBS.

The musings seemed to take Moonves completely by surprise.

"He's been hanging around Donald Trump too long," he joked immediately following the session. Burnett's latest hit, The Apprentice, teams him with Trump at rival NBC.

Moonves said yesterday that Burnett did offer The Apprentice to CBS but it was done more out of courtesy. Trump had a previous commitment to NBC and apparently is no fan of Moonves. "We knew it was a done deal at the other network," said the CBS boss.

Burnett also revealed that he and Moonves have not spoken since the Apprentice session last week where Trump called Moonves "the most overrated person in television."

When Burnett edged past Moonves at the end of yesterday's packed Survivor session, the CBS chief tried to make light of the situation, shouting out, "Please do Survivor 9."

Burnett did not shake hands with Moonves and seemed anxious to hurry past.

Moonves suggested that casting for Survivor 9 is already under way and that Burnett is just being coy to hype the series. He offered to take bets with reporters that the series will be back. "The key thing Mark Burnett said in that session was, 'I'm a Drama Queen,'" he said. (Burnett was responding to a question during the session about a clip showing armed troops escorting the 18 All-Star survivors to the Pearl Islands.)

CBS is desperately trying to woo Ray Romano to come back for one last season of Everybody Loves Raymond. There's no way the network would just drop the No. 1 reality show from their schedule without a fight.

On the other hand, Burnett has never cut a deal for more than one Survivor at a time with CBS and could walk away from the franchise.

As Moonves said yesterday, if you want loyalty in Hollywood, "buy a dog."

This was pretty funny.  Thinking of Burnett stating/describing himself as a "Drama Queen" - cinched it for me that this article is a ploy to keep us Survivor addicts on the brink of "......." - insert your own word(s).

Ohhhh he's "coy" all right.  Always has been - probably always will be.  That's what makes Survivor what it is....one long impossibly twisty road with dozens of forks leading to dead ends.  :laff:

Hmm, this on top of J.P.'s interview recently saying things like if survivor dies it will be the internet spoiler's fault....makes me concerned they will decide to stop.

...

"It's a great schedule," said CBS chairman Leslie Moonves. "To get on our schedule for the next season, you have to be damn good."

In a choice bit of Hollywood dramatics, CBS also announced a deal with executive producer Mark Burnett for two more Survivor editions — after Moonves and Burnett hammered it out by the escalators at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.

A few minutes earlier, Burnett had complained to a roomful of reporters that he hadn't made his deal with CBS and time was running short.

Moonves said he was happy with the deal, despite calling Burnett a "drama queen."

It was inevitable: CBS wasn't about to make Survivor without the man who made it a sensation, and Burnett couldn't take it anywhere else because CBS owns the show.

CBS executives showed none of the hand-wringing about the state of the television industry displayed by other network executives during meetings with the Television Critics Association over the last week.

Manufactured Drama Assists 'Survivor'-CBS Deal
By BILL CARTER

Published: January 19, 2004

OS ANGELES, Dec. 18 - After a negotiation that played out over two news conferences, several asides to reporters, and, finally, an encounter at the top of a staircase in a Los Angeles hotel, CBS announced Saturday afternoon that it had a deal with Mark Burnett to produce two more editions of the hit reality series "Survivor."

Although the news surprised no one, it was preceded by a reality show of its own starring Mr. Burnett and the CBS chairman, Leslie Moonves, which appeared to cast doubt on the seemingly inevitable return of one of CBS's most popular shows.

First in the spotlight, Mr. Burnett: He came to a Los Angeles hotel ballroom to meet with television reporters to publicize the "Survivor All-Stars" edition, which begins on Feb. 1 after the Super Bowl. But he used the occasion to drop a few hints that perhaps there would be no more "Survivor" shows after this one, because CBS, a unit of Viacom, had not sent him any notice that it would want more from him.

"Who knows? Maybe CBS's strategy is to go out on top with the all-star show," Mr. Burnett told reporters, none of whom believed him. With the pressure of finding a location to stage a new "Survivor'' bearing down on him, Mr. Burnett speculated that if nothing happened within a week, he would not be able to produce a new "Survivor" for the fall television season.

Did any of the posturing have to do with the fact that Mr. Burnett had delivered his latest hit reality series, "The Apprentice,'' to NBC instead of CBS? Or that that show's star, Donald Trump, has been gleefully criticizing Mr. Moonves in public? Or that Mr. Moonves had played a little gamesmanship with "The Apprentice'' by placing his biggest show, "C.S.I.," opposite it? "I don't know," Mr. Burnett said.

Mr. Moonves, standing at the back of the same ballroom, professed amazement at Mr. Burnett's statements, and questioned whether CBS had ever ordered new editions of "Survivor" as early as January. Mr. Moonves said he simply could not fathom why Mr. Burnett would think he was being snubbed. "Maybe he's been hanging around with Donald Trump too much," he said. Mr. Moonves then promised he would get a mullet haircut if "Survivor" were not on CBS next fall.

As for "The Apprentice," Mr. Moonves said, Mr. Burnett had pitched the series to him "as a courtesy," though a deal was already all but set at NBC. Would CBS have bid on the show? "Possibly,'' Mr. Moonves said.

A few moments later, the two men ran into each other at the staircase outside the ballroom. After a brief exchange, Mr. Burnett had his official order for two more editions of "Survivor."

The CBS corporate spokesman, Chris Ender, noted that the network owned the rights to the series "in perpetuity" and could have gone forward without Mr. Burnett. But it would never be the same, Mr. Ender said, and Mr. Moonves knows it. "Mark does a great job," Mr. Moonves said. "We love him."

Shocked Shocked Shocked I doubt that Survivor will ever end. Or at least that's what is going on inside my head. Survivor will not end until either MB or Probst dies. If they quit on the show, they will probably get threats from Survivor fans all over.

Says Orlando Sentinal:

Survivor: All-Stars will debut less than a half-hour after the Super Bowl concludes Feb. 1, Moonves promised. After CBS screened a long clip of the series, executive producer Mark Burnett revealed more editions had not been ordered.

That situation changed after reporters questioned Moonves. In a hotel hallway, he and Burnett struck a deal for two more, said Chris Ender of CBS.

This sounds like Moonves is getting desperate by chasing MB into a hallway to get this thing signed. This does not seem to be a good sign for the future, so Burnett might finish his Survivor career with season 10.
