'Survivor' winner leaving FDNY

BY TONY SCLAFANI and ELVA RAMIREZ
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

"Survivor" winner Tom Westman has one foot out the firehouse door - but doesn't know quite where the other one is going to land.
Despite initial plans to work five more years after his $1 million May win, the FDNY lieutenant filed for an Aug. 4 retirement last week. The 20-year veteran has been on paid leave since late May.

"My wife felt 20 years and out was the smart way out of this," the father of three said.

The 41-year-old Sayville, L.I., resident has hired an agent and hopes to become a motivational speaker, mining leadership skills he honed as one of New York's Bravest.

Since his "Survivor" win, Westman has kept busy.

He was seen casting his vote for Ben Franklin as the greatest American on the Discovery Channel.

Westman also has an Aug. 10 cameo appearance on the soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful," where he plays himself opposite TV firefighter Lorenzo Lamas.

But he hasn't gone all Hollywood.

Later this month, he will lobby Congress for early intervention on hearing-impairment issues. His 9-year-old daughter Meghan, who lost her hearing at 18 months, had successful cochlear-implant surgery at age 2.

Meanwhile, his buddies at Ladder 108 in Brooklyn say they're going to miss him. "He's definitely a loss to the company," said Firefighter Bayete Lynch, 25.

Well, an average NYC fireman makes $40.000 a year. With all the money Tom has made on Survivor, he has more money than he would make working over 20 years at the FDNY!, so I guess it made sense to retire now. Plus, I heard he's a motivational speecher now and he still gets to help a lot of people, especially kids.
