For Air Max Day 2016, Nike asked sneakerheads to vote for their favorite Air Max of all time, which would then be re-released in 2017. Nominees in the “Vote Back” poll included the likes of the Air Max 90 “Duck Camo,” the Air Max 90 “War Hawk,” and the beloved atmos x Nike Air Max 1 “Elephant,” which eventually won the vote.
It may sound surprising, but the iconic colorway was inspired by the image of an elephant having a bath, with Tinker Hatfield’s signature cracked concrete print from the Air Jordan III (itself schedule to make a comeback alongside) constituting the obvious elephant reference, while teal hits on the Swoosh, tongue and heel obviously refer to water.
This particular sneaker is Nike Roshe Run Donna an impressive article of Air Max history by itself, but the sneaker gains even more importance when you consider it in the wider Nike Roshe Run Womens picture of all atmos x Nike collaborations.
When Nike first released the Air Max 1 on March 26, 1987, it released not just a shoe, but a huge branch of sneaker culture. It revolutionized the game, and that’s why every year the Swoosh unites to celebrate the original drop with a host of new retros, remixes and innovations.
While Nike is sure to be keeping some of its cards close to its chest ahead of the big day, it has just announced some of the biggest releases set to debut throughout the month of March. We already knew the Air Max Day 2017 collection would include the atmos x Nike Air Vapormax Dames Nike “Elephant” (it won the Vote Back last year) but there are also a load of new treats and surprises in store for us.
Nike Nike Air Max Thea Femme couldn’t celebrate the Air Max Day without rereleasing the kicks that started it all — the Air Max 1. Originally released in 1987, the Air Max 1 introduced the world to visible Nike Air cushioning with a classic Tinker Hatfield design in three iconic colorways: “Classic white,” “Red/Grey/White,” and “Blue/Grey.” All three look set for another run out.
The Air Max 90 Flyknit combines the OG 90 design with the latest in sneaker technology. A Flyknit upper increases flexibility, while a cored-out midsole decreases weight and increases comfort. Click through the gallery above to see the different colorways.
Yes, the Nike x atmos Air Max “Elephant” is finally set for a rerelease. First released as a part of the Asics Black Friday Womens “Zoo Pack” in 2006, the collaboration spliced a staple Nike motif with meticulous color blocking to highlight the subtle jade Nike Air Max 90 Womens Swoosh.
