 World Race 2004

Episode One: They're Off!

Grand Canyon--Arizona- It is blazing hot day at one of the entrances  to the Grand Canyon. Host John Goodman steps out of the Hummer he was riding in and comes closer.
“Very soon, a race will begin. No, it’s not an Indy Race or a Jetski Race, but a race around the world. 10 two-person teams will try and beat each other to a series of tasks accomplished while traveling around the world. The first task is the ‘Tandem Task’ in which both team members must choose between two challenges. Once they complete it, they will travel some more and reach a ‘Solo Task’. This task must be completed by one member, chosen by the pair. Once they accomplish this, they may choose to retrieve the ‘Skip Ahead’ in which they remove a card from their clue envelope which tells them to directly go to the ‘Check-In’ and skip all other tasks, without doing any task to retrieve it. The ‘Skip Ahead’ can only be used once per team throughout the race. Once they’ve completed all of the tasks, they must reach the ‘Check-In’. The last team to reach this pre-determined place gets eliminated and is no longer eligible to win the $2,000,000 cash prize. There are two pre-determined non-elimination rounds in which no one is eliminated from the game. Let’s get this started!”
The first team stepped out of the Hummer Limo. “It’s the oldest team in the game, Dennis and Joyce O’Greity,” says John as the step out of the car. Dennis and Joyce stand side by side on the starting line.  The second team out of the Hummer Limo is Howard Gordin and Al Fremdon. “These two want to jumpstart there respective businesses if they win,” John says as they line up next to Dennis and Joyce. The third team steps out. “This is Randy and James, the youngest team in the race.” Three teams now line up along the painted red line. Charles and Ed Darlutz, brothers, are next out of the car. “As the heaviest team in the race, will weight affect their performance,” comments John as eight people stand in front of him on the starting line. The fifth team to step out of the limousine is Loni and Walter, the dating couple. “Can their relationship survive this adventure?” questions John as the sixth team opens the door and comes out. It’s Marcia and Theodore, the father-and-daughter racers. “Will his age slow down his fast paced daughter?” ponders John as twelve people now stand in front of him. “Will their flame be rekindled?” asks John as the divorced couple, Thom and Paula, step onto the starting line. Jim and Frank, co-workers, line up next. The army nurses, Margaret and Louise, step out. “Can their knowledge of many different places make up for their slow physical pace?” quizzes John as the final team gets out. Rhonda and Nancy, the self-proclaimed loudmouths, line up on the starting line.

“I assume you’ve been informed on the rules, regulations, and how to drive the vehicles, so let’s get started,” says John looking over all of the teams. “On my go, you will run to the path behind me. You must go single file, so the order you get there is the order you go down. Once the path widens, you can pass up people. Once you get to the parking lot, you’ll pick a Chevy Equinox and take the clue off the windshield. Follow its instructions which will have you fly to your first country and you’ll do your first task. Make sure your packs are well closed and your ready for the ride.”

“As the old team, we know we won’t finish in first, but we can beat the other  weak teams,” says Dennis.

“I’m ready to run over people to get to that truck first!” exclaims Rhonda.

“On your marks……..” says John. “Get set!!!!!!!” “Travel!!!!!!!” signals John and the teams are off running. Here is the order in which they reached the path.

1. Walter/Loni- Dating Couple
2.Charles/Ed- Brothers
3. Randy/James- Students
4. Rhonda/Nancy- New York Mothers
5.Howard/Al- Entrepreneurs
6.Thom/Paula-Divorced
7.Marcia/Theo-Father and Daughter
8.Jim/Frank- Co-Workers
9.Dennis/Joyce-Grandparents
Last.Louise/Margaret-Army Nurses
The second the path widened, Howard and Al, the entrepreneurs, pulled into the lead. They reached the parking lot first and grabbed the keys to the lead Equinox. Al jammed the key nervously into the trunk and they threw their bags in. Howard ran around to the front and ripped the clue off the windshield. Al got in the driver’s seat and the first Equinox was off. Walter and Loni reached the second truck and sped to the airport.
“Take your Equinox to the airport and fly yourselves to Buckingham Palace, England. You’ll receive your next clue there,” read Charles as his overweight brother caught up with him. Randy and James, fraternity brothers, reached the trucks fourth and were quickly off. All the other teams reached the cars soon after.
“Buckingham Palace!” exclaimed Joyce in excitement as she and her husband for 60 years were the last ones to reach the truck. Joyce got into the passenger seat as Dennis started the car.

Howard and Al, Walter and Loni, and Randy and James parked their cars side by side and ran into the airport.
“Can I get the soonest flight to England?” asked Al who reached the counter first.
“We’re in first!” rejoiced Howard to his partner.
“We have six seats reserved for the racers,” said the attendant. Howard sighed, knowing that the other two of the lead teams would be on the plane with Al and himself. Howard/Al, Walter/Loni, and Randy/James boarded the 3:30 pm flight to England. The remaining racers would have to take the two later flights.
“Dammit! We‘re lost!” screamed Ed fiercely turning the wheel.
“We were in the top four, too,” whined his thinner brother.
“There is only room for three teams on the first plane,” panted Rhonda following her New York friend, Nancy in a sprint to the airport. They got in line behind Jim and Frank, the coworkers, Marcia and Theo, father and daughter, and the divorced couple, Thom and Paula.
“I was sure that Charles and Ed were somewhere in the mix. For a fat guy, Ed was pretty quick,” said Nancy surprised that they even got on the second flight.
“Wow, babe, you really drove quickly,” said Theo complementing his daughter. They were now first in line for the second flight and in fifth place. They, Rhonda and Nancy, Jim and Frank, and Thom and Paula, in that order, got on the second flight at 5:15 pm.
Dennis swerved the SUV into the lot and got the packs out and caught up with his wife.
“Is this flight booked?” Joyce asked Rhonda.
“Yeah, sorry,” said Rhonda getting into the entrance tunnel.
“Dennis! We’re in eighth! There are two teams behind us!” celebrated Joyce.
“I really thought that we’d be behind until we reached the Check-In, where we would be eliminated,” Joyce reveals.
“Come on, toots, we’re still in it,” said Margaret parking the Equinox next to Dennis and Joyce’s truck. Louise got out and jogged to the door.
“We’re going to have to haul our bums to get the third flight!” said Ed grabbing the packs as his skinny brother ran through the entrance doors. Dennis and Joyce, Margaret and Louise, and Charles and Ed got on the last flight that departed at 6:00 pm and connected at two stops.0

The first flight touched down in England at 6:34 am the next day. Howard and Al, who had the seat closest to the door, ran out as soon as they could. Walter and Loni followed closely in second. Randy and James lumbered out of the plane in third.
“I can’t find the clue box,” said Howard searching for any sign.
“There,” whispered Loni to Walter. They discretely jogged to the box and ripped out the first clue. James and Randy saw them and snatched the second clue out.
“Fat guys comin’ in second!” joked Randy looking over the clue.
“Drive yourselves to Buckingham Palace and tell the guards you are with the race,” James read out loud. Howard and Al ran past them. Randy instantly shoved the clue into his pocket.
“Did you find the clue?” asked Al. 0
“No,” lied James. Howard and Al kept running and Randy signaled a taxi.
“Buckingham Palace. And step on it!!” ordered James throwing money at the cab driver’s face. Loni and Walter hailed a cab and followed the leaders.
“They lied to us!” figured out Howard.
“Well, we can still catch up!” screamed Al sticking out his arm to find a cab.
James and Randy reached Buckingham Palace first.
“It don’t open till 10:00 am,” yelled James. Now nearly everyone would catch up.
“I was so mad because we worked hard to come in first, and now everyone was going to catch up with us,” said Randy.
Loni and Walter, and Howard and Al soon caught up. They napped on the park benches, waiting for them to open the gates.
The second plane touched down at 5:49 am at the same airport. Jim and Frank, coworkers, were the first ones off the plane followed by Marcia and Theo, then Thom and Paula, lastly, Rhonda and Nancy. They all got taxis and got to Buckingham Palace and waited, too.
“Nothing to do but wait,” gloomed Rhonda, who, with her partner, was in seventh place.
The final plane touched down at 8:45 am. Dennis and Joyce got to the clue box eighth, then Charles and Ed in ninth, and finally Margaret and Louise in last place.
“I realized that if we kept up our current pace, we’d be eliminated,” recalls Louise.
“What’s the Skip-Ahead?” asked Louise trying to see over her friend’s shoulder.
“It’s pretty easy, all we have to do is find Oxford University, that’s where the Check-In is,” said Margaret hailing a taxi.
“Should we use it?” asked Louise.
Margaret replied with a question of her own, “Do you want to advance to the next round?”
Dennis and Joyce held hands and walked behind Rhonda and Nancy who were in seventh. Charles and Ed, in ninth, came up behind them soon after. Howard looked at his watch. 10:00 on the dime.
“This is your Tandem Task. I will hand you a picture, you will go in the art room and match it, you each have a different  picture so there will be no problem,” said the guard who was now unlocking the gates. James and Randy ran into the palace and followed the signs to the art room. They saw Walter and Loni come running in behind them, and three more people, only five at a time. James and Randy searched for the picture.
“This better be it,” said James holding the photo of the picture next to the real thing. He nodded his head yes and he unhooked the painting and ran towards the entrance, with Randy, his partner close behind.
Margaret paid the taxi driver and Louise shut the door after she got out. They walked side-by side, smiling, up until they reached the mat where John Goodman stood. It was 12:46 pm.
“Welcome to England,” he said. “You’re team number one,” he informed them. The nurses hugged each other and celebrated their first place finish.
“This is the correct matching,” said the guard handing them their next clue.
“Solo Task--Choose one of you to go through the hedge maze to find your Check-In information,” read James.
“I’ll go,” volunteered James. Thom and Paula cam out with the painting next, Thom volunteering for the Solo Task. Rhonda and Nancy went in next. Loni and Walter came out and Loni went into the maze. Howard and Al came out and Howard went into the maze.
“We’re no alpha-male team, but we are one of the fastest teams here,” states Al.
Dennis and Joyce calmly walked into the Palace as Rhonda and Nancy came out with the painting. Rhonda power-walked into the maze. Jim and Frank went into the Palace. Charles and Ed lumbered into the Palace. Thom came out of the maze, and his anxious ex-wife Paula hugged him and kissed him on the cheek when he held the keys to the Chevy Equinox that would take them to the Check-In.
“Oxford,” he whispered and the walked to the parking lot. James came struggling out of the maze.
“Oxford University,” he wheezed, handing his fraternity brother the keys. Marcia and her dad came out of the palace and Marcia went into the maze. Loni and Marcia came out about ten minutes later. Howard came out next.
“Let’s move, Howie!” urged Al to his teammate. Rhonda came out next. Rhonda jogged out with the keys. Dennis and Joyce came out and Joyce left her pack with her husband and she sprinted into the maze. Charles and Ed waddled out of the Palace and Ed went flying into the maze. Jim and Frank were the last team to come out of the Palace and match the painting. Jim sprinted into the maze, knowing they were last.
“I knew that if it came down to a footrace to the finish, this whale wasn’t gonna beat anyone,” stated Jim about his friend.
Ed came out smiling, tossing the keys to his brother. Dennis and Frank were the last two people left waiting for their teammates. Footsteps were heard as Jim and Joyce came out at the same time. Jim threw his keys at Frank so the heavyset contestant could get a head start. Frank got to the truck and Jim leapt in the backseat as Joyce and Dennis reached their truck.
“We are frickin’ lost again!” screamed Charles.
“Wait here and follow another team, we’ll beat them in a footrace,” said Ed consoling his partner. A car went flying past them on the highway, so fast that they didn’t even realize it was a truck they should follow. A second truck passed them, but slower. “NOW!” he screamed to his partner.
Thom and Paula jogged to the mat. “You’re team number two,” said John Goodman. They hugged each other and went into the dorm rooms and rested for the night. James and Randy slowly walked up to John Goodman.
“Team three,” he said. They cheered and threw their bags around. Marcia and her father got out just as Rhonda and Nancy got out of their truck.
“Forget the bags!” Marcia screamed to her dad. Rhonda and Nancy pulled ahead of Theodore, but Marcia still lead them. Marcia stopped, grabbed her dad’s hand and pulled him ahead of the New York Moms.
“If two seconds means that much to her and her dad, let her go ahead of us,” said Nancy recalling Marcia’s move.
“Marcia and Theodore, you’re team number four. Nancy and Rhonda, you’re team number five.” Both  teams hugged and rejoiced with each other.
“Howard and Al, you’re team number six,” John said. Al high-fived Howard.
Loni and Walter dropped their packs and sprinted to the mat.
“You’re team number seven,” said John.
“Not as good as I thought,” said Loni.
“At least we’re still in it,” said Walter looking on the bright side. The eighth car pulled into a space.
“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eighth Joyce!” said Dennis stopping to count the other trucks as Joyce ran to the mat.
“I’m sure you know, you’re team number eight,” said John shaking their hands.
“Being old isn’t bad at all, look, we outlasted people half our age,” explains Joyce.

“Come on, Ed, we still have a chance!” said Charles to his brother. Charles sprinted and reached the mat as his brother struggled because of his weight. Jim stopped the car without parking and got out followed by the 275-pound Frank Hollister, his teammate. Jim instantly passed the struggling Ed. However it was a race between Frank and Ed. Ed moved a little quicker.
“Whichever one of your teammates arrives here first, his team advances,” explained John. Ed dropped his pack but it was too late, Frank had gotten a huge lead and stood next to his coworker.
“You’re team nine,” John certified. He waited a little while longer while Ed reached the finish line.
“You’re the first team out, I’m sorry,” John informed them.

After the Race
Charles: “You know, I’m sure both of us don’t care that we didn’t win, but it would’ve been nice. We will never forget this adventure.”
Jim: “I was the second fattest guy in the race, beaten in a sprint by the fattest guy. No, I am not bitter, but I’m gonna lose weight because of this.”
