Final Sweeps Numbers Give Edge to CBS
Fri, Nov 29, 2002 01:18 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - There were no upsets in the final few days of the November sweeps period, allowing CBS to retain the top spot.

As of Tuesday (Nov. 26), when network executives held conference calls with reporters to tout their successes and announce some midseason series, CBS held a slim lead -- about 150,000 viewers -- over NBC in total audience. NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker was hopeful that his network could gain the top spot in the final two nights of sweeps.

That didn't happen. In fact, CBS increased its margin slightly by the time the sweeps ended Wednesday (Nov. 27). The network averaged 13.31 million viewers a night during the period, which began Oct. 31. NBC drew 13.08 million viewers each night. ABC, 10.88 million, was third, followed by FOX, 8.16 million.

NBC held its lead among adults 18-49, the group advertisers target most heavily. It averaged a 5.0 rating in the demographic, a good distance in front of second-place ABC's 4.2. CBS was third at 4.1, while FOX averaged 3.6.

CBS' lineup of Tuesday dramas and a rejiggered Wednesday schedule helped the network keep its overall lead in the last two days of sweeps. The network aired "Survivor: Thailand" clip show, "The Amazing Race" and a repeat "CSI" on Wednesday opposite NBC's typically strong lineup.

While CBS finished second on the night, the margin was close enough for the network to keep its overall lead.

I also regularly catch 24 and Firefly.  I mentioned this in another sub-forum, but Firefly has steadily improved over each episode that I've watched (although I missed the last 2 because of my holiday).  If you haven't seen it, give it a look, if you watched it once and didn't go ack, give it another look, it's really improved quite a bit over the first episode.

NBC Comes Back from Thanksgiving to Win Thursday
Fri, Dec 6, 2002 10:02 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Fast National ratings for Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002

NBC shook off its Thanksgiving lethargy to win Thursday night in households with a 13.5 rating/21 share. CBS was second with a 12.6/19, while the other networks lagged far behind. UPN took third with a 4.2/6, followed by ABC, 3.7/6, FOX, 2.4/4, and The WB, 2.4/3.

Among adults 18-49, NBC was also No. 1 with a 10.4, ahead of CBS, 7.9, ABC, 1.6, and FOX, 1.4.

At 8 p.m., "Friends," 15.8/24, and "Scrubs," 12.5/19, teamed up to take a 14.2/22 for the hour, enough to beat "Survivor: Thailand" on CBS, 12.1/19. UPN was third with "WWE Smackdown" while ABC's new series "Dinotopia" continued to struggle with a 3.7/5. FOX gave over its night to the movie "Dead Man on Campus," and The WB rounded things out with the comedies "Family Affair," 2.5/4, and "Do Over," 2.3/3.

UPN stayed in third with wrestling, while ABC was still fourth with the Christmas special "Dear Santa," 2.8/4. Back-to-back episodes of "JKX: The Jamie Kennedy Experiment" averaged a 2.4/3, enough to put The WB ahead of the conclusion of FOX's movie.

NBC was back in first at 10 p.m. with "ER," 15.2/25, ahead of CBS' "Without a Trace," 8.0/13. ABC had its best showing of the night with "PrimeTime Thursday," 4.7/8.

Ratings information provided is from fast national data, except for UPN and The WB, which are the results of the overnight metered markets (the top 53 markets across the country). All numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

Tue, Dec 24, 2002 03:54 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Thanks to the finale of "Survivor: Thailand," CBS had no competition for the week ending Dec. 22 -- the network finished a decisive first in household ratings and shares, total viewers and in the 18 to 49 demographic.

Averaging a 8.2 rating/14 share and 12.73 million viewers, CBS topped rival NBC with 6.2/10 and 9.15 million. ABC finished third with 5.9/10 and 9.09 million and FOX was fourth with 4.0/7 and 6.44 million. UPN followed with 2.3/4 and 3.84 million and The WB was last with 2.1/3 and 3.38 million.

In the 18 to 49 demographic, CBS' 4.1 average rating was well ahead of NBC's 3.4. ABC was third with 3.2, followed by FOX, 2.8, UPN, 1.6, and The WB, 1.3.

Brian Heidik won "Survivor: Thailand," which in turn won the most-watched program distinction last week with a 13.5/22 on CBS. "CSI: Miami" finished second with 11.9/19 as the "Survivor: Thailand" reunion special took third with 11.6/19. A repeat of "Everybody Loves Raymond" followed in fourth with 11.3/17 as "Judging Amy" placed seventh with 10.1/17. "Still Standing" was ninth, 9.5/15.

"JAG" finished in 10th place last week, with 9.2/15, as "60 Minutes" took 12th, 8.9/16. "Yes, Dear" was in 16th with 8.4/13 as "King of Queens" finished in 18th, 8.2/13. "The Guardian" was CBS' final entry in the top twenty in 19th, 7.9/12.

A repeat of "Friends" was NBC's top performer in sixth place with 10.6/18 and a repeat of "Law & Order" was eighth with 9.7/16. A farewell wedding on "Providence" was enough for 11th with 9.0/16 as a repeat of "Will & Grace" took 13th with 8.6/14. "Scrubs" finished in 15th with 8.5/14.

A repeat of "The Simpsons" was FOX's top show last week in 48th with 5.8/10.
