Survivor's Chopper Arrives by Ship

Cook Island News - 6.14.06

The Survivor production helicopter is due to arrive aboard the Pacific Forum this weekend.

Late last month Tiare Bay applied to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation for an air service license.

In the application to minister Tangata Vavia, company representative John Kenning says the company will use the helicopter as a means of transport between their home base in Nikaupara, Aitutaki, and the motus where the series will be filmed.

The Australian registered Robinson R44 chopper is the same make and model as the new Cook Islands Pacific Australia one that arrived in Rarotonga last week.

The helicopter is likely to be operated in and around Aitutaki and maybe other southern group islands as support for the production of the television series for filming and emergency medical evacuations if needed.

Australian pilots Kenneth Gray and Shaun Gillespie will operate the chopper.

Once in Rarotonga the chopper will be serviced and made ready for the flight to Aitutaki using the airport hanger facilities of Air Rarotonga.

It is scheduled to arrive in Aitutaki by 19 June. Public submissions on the issue of the licence closed on Wednesday. Apparently no submissions were received by the Ministry of Transport and a license is expected to be issued in the next two weeks.

ok, maybe this is a really stupid question.. but couldn't you just fly it there?  Or fuel wise, is it cheaper to transport by ship?

I thought the same thing at first.  Then I thought about the fact that the islands are out in the middle of nowhere.  I agree, probably much more economical.
