Chandra Levy's remains found
Remains found in park where missing intern jogged
May 22, 2002 Posted: 6:20 PM EDT (2220 GMT)

Chief Ramsey made the announcement Wednesday, saying that the Levy family had already been notified.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The skeletal remains found in a Washington park Wednesday morning have been identified as those of former Washington intern Chandra Levy, Washington Police Chief Charles Ramsey said.

Levy was last seen April 30, 2001, days after completing an internship with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. She was 24 when she disappeared.

Investigators had not yet determined a cause of death, Ramsey said.

A Levy family attorney said her parents heard about the identification on the news, and then Ramsey called them to confirm that it was her body.

He said her parents planned to release a formal statement at 7:30 ET.

A man walking his dog and looking for turtles in the park found the remains about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Ramsey told reporters earlier. He said the discovery included a skull and that "bits and pieces" of what appeared to be women's clothing" were found.

Police searched the roughly 2,820-acre Rock Creek Park last summer, including the area where the remains were found, Ramsey said. The park is not far from where Levy lived in Washington.

The park, which cuts through some of the city's more upscale neighborhoods, includes jogging and bicycle paths. Police said Levy had looked at a Web site that included information about the Klingle Mansion, an 1823 farmhouse now used as park offices, before she disappeared.

Ramsey said the remains were found in an out-of-the way area of the park.

Levy had been missing since April 2001.
"This is heavily wooded area, very easy to conceal something here," said Ramsey, who described the area as a "very difficult place to search." He also said it was possible that the body could have been left in the park after the search.

Shortly after Levy disappeared, controversy swirled around U.S. Rep. Gary Condit, D-California. Levy's family said she had a relationship with Condit, a 53-year-old married father of two.

Condit publicly refused to say whether he had a romantic relationship with her, but police sources said he admitted to one during an interview. The case hurt Condit politically, and he lost a Democratic primary challenge in March.

Condit declined to comment Wednesday at the Capitol when asked about the park discovery.

Police chief says Levy's parents 'distraught'

Levy's parents recorded an interview with Oprah Winfrey before receiving news of today's discovery.
Police handled Levy's disappearance as a missing persons case. Despite hundreds of tips and months spent searching city parks and buildings, authorities got no firm leads about what happened to Levy.

Police said they did not consider Condit a suspect in Levy's disappearance, and no suspects ever were named in connection with the investigation.

Levy's parents said they wanted Condit to meet with private investigators they hired to find their daughter, but he refused.

Earlier, Ramsey said Levy's parents were upset and distraught, when he called to update them on the search.

Last month, Levy's parents marked one year since their daughter's disappearance with interviews in which they talked about their heartache and hopes.

Susan Levy, Chandra's mother, said she doesn't react to phone calls with much anticipation.

"I would say that I don't think I jump thinking that she's going to be on the other line, but I'm going to tell you ... that I still have faith and hope that Chandra will come back to us alive," she told CNN's Larry King in April.

Levy’s death ruled a homicide

But coroner can’t pinpoint cause of death
May 28 -- Chandra Levy's parents are expected to emerge from seclusion Tuesday for a memorial service for the former intern in her hometown of Modesto, Calif. NBC's George Lewis reports.

BREAKING NEWS
NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 28 —  Chandra Levy was murdered by unknown means, the medical examiner said Tuesday, a finding that clears the way for police to open a homicide investigation into the death of the 24-year-old former intern who disappeared more than a year ago. “There is insufficient evidence to arrive at a conclusion as to a specific injury that caused her death,” said Dr. Jonathan Arden. Meanwhile, the former intern’s parents, who have remained in seclusion since her death was announced on Wednesday, were to attend a memorial service in her hometown of Modesto, Calif.

ARDEN SAID the circumstances under which Levy’s remains were found in Rock Creek Park led to the finding that the manner of death was homicide.
“Her disappearance and recovery in a remote location (led to) the conclusion ... that she had to come to her death and been placed there by another person,” he said.
Arden said he could not pinpoint the time of death, but said the condition of the remains was “consistent with the time frame in which she disappeared.”
Levy’s skull and bones were discovered on Wednesday in a remote area of the park. Police said that little soft tissue was found with Levy’s remains.
Pieces of clothing, including a University of Southern California sweatshirt, a sports bra and tennis shoes, also were found at the scene.
The 24-year-old former intern, who vanished on or about May 1, 2001, as she prepared to return to California.
District of Columbia Police Chief Charles Ramsey said last week that he “would not be surprised” if the report determines that Levy was a homicide victim.
Meanwhile, Levy’s parents and up to 1,000 mourners were expected to attend a public memorial service in Modesto.

DETAILS OF MEMORIAL SERVICE
Sources told NBC News that Robert and Susan Levy would emerge from seclusion to attend the 2 p.m. ET ceremony at the Modesto Center Plaza, which had been adorned with 15 enlarged photos of Chandra Levy.

Rabbi Paul Gordon of Temple Beth Shalom in Modesto was to preside over the memorial. Susan Levy’s brother, Paul Zamsky, and his wife, Linda, were expected to speak at the service, but Levy’s parents did not plan to talk, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Levys remained inside their one-story brick ranch home throughout the holiday weekend as family and friends stopped by to offer food, flowers and condolences over their daughter’s death.
“They’re still numb,” Jane Lund, a neighbor and longtime family friend, told The Modesto Bee after spending about two hours at the house. “Bob can’t stop crying.”
Lawyer and friend George Arata said Monday the mood inside the house was gradually improving.
“It’s getting better,” he said. “We’re just trying to keep everybody busy.”
Police spent the weekend searching the area where Levy’s remains were found in hopes of uncovering for additional evidence.

REMAINS FOUND IN REMOTE AREA
Her remains were found “off the beaten path” in rugged terrain, Ramsey said last week. In addition, police recovered Levy’s knotted leggings, suggesting she may have been tied up, a person close to the investigation said.
Police said they have no prime suspect in the case. They may again interview some of the people they talked to after Levy disappeared 13 months ago, including Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., and Ingmar Guandique, who was convicted of assaulting two joggers in the park last year. Both victims believed Guandique wanted to rape them.
Condit, through his attorney, has expressed his condolences to the Levy family. Police have said repeatedly he is not a suspect, but the Levys’ attorney said the family still believes Condit knows more about final days of the former Bureau of Prisons intern than he has said. Condit lost the Democratic primary in March.
