Need a cute business name...
« on: Jun 25th, 2002, 9:43am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

OK, I've got this wild idea to start making flannel blankets for babies.  Similiar to receiving blankets, but larger and they won't lose their shape.  This going to be a small business for me and I need a name.  Anyone have any cute name ideas.

One name I'm tossing around right now is:  Snug Bug Kids Company.

What a neat idea for a business.  How about "Wrapped In Love" for a name?  I really like Snug Bug Kids Company too.  Smiley

Great name IL, but a quick Yahoo search produced a gift basket company with that name.  Embarassed

Bummer, IMO the name is more fitting for a baby blanket business than a gift basket company.  Wink  Good luck with the business, I work for a woman who started out as a very small business 10 years ago and has done VERY well.  We make embelished shirts and they are sold all over the USA in small stores and Pro Shops.
Its a good deal for all involved.  I am able to work out of my home and she still has the business at her home and employs three people there.

I'm hoping that one day the business will become strong enough that I could just solely work from home and still provide income to sustain our lifestyle.

Just for fun...
Company name:  Cryptoflans

Blankets come in packages of six, with a different young child type puzzler embroidered on each one.

Advertising gimmick could be:  Your child will love the delightful puzzles, thinking about the puzzle calms and relaxes them to sleep. (unlike adults which are driven crazy)

Good Luck on the new business Crypto!  I like Snug Bug Kids Company!  I liked the Wrapped In Love too.  Too bad it's used.

What about "Snuggly wrapped with Love"? or "Snuggly Loves"? Just a few ideas.. I like your idea of using snug in your name, and I think that Love with it is a good combination.

Just a little more insight about the blankets.  They are going to be about 40"x40" in size and there will be two types.  One that is reversible and you can choose which two flannels you want and then there will be just a plain jane using only one flannel.  The edges will be done in lace, satin or just a plain stitch.  I've also been tossing around the idea of having a mini blanket and burp cloths to match.

Here's an idea for a similar product that I don't see on the market, that a friend of mine's mother hand made and gave as a baby gift.

It's a full sized terry-cloth towel, with a hood sewn in the middle of one of the long edges, and the hood is lined with a soft cotton fabric.  It wraps up my new baby after a bath, completely unlike most little baby towels that are hooded in the corner, and the hood is big enough that my 3 year old can wear it.  He calls it his "cape" and runs around the house pretending to be a super-hero after baths.  The towel has become a major source of contention in this house, and I would kill to get another one.  It's one of the best baby gifts I've gotten.

I've already thought about these and making them in sizes up to about a six year old size.  I believe Lands End is coming out with hooded towels that are decorated like animals.  Haven't check it out fully yet, but knowing Lands End they are too pricey.  Awesome idea Rhune.

I really like the mark Snug Bug.  It's a great trade-mark for blankets.

I saw those terry cloth towels that are shaped like animals a couple of y ears ago at the Reagan National Airport in DC and bought one for Wednesdya.  It came with a matching handpuppet facecloth.  She is still using it.   You buy them big and they can use them for years.

It was a big hit last summer at a pool party we went to.

good luck Crypto.

Yes, I do have some mock blankies that I'll take pics of tonight.  May need help in the posting department.  I've also decided that Snug Bug has grown on me and that's the name I'm going to register as my company.  A quick search with the Patent and Trademark office has also turned up no one else with this name.  This morning I received a quote from a graphic artist for the logo design, damn, those people are proud of their work.  So everything appears to be moving right along.  Working on the paper work to file with the state and county and then the tax id number next. Hopefully within the next three months I should be up and running.

darn, I did a search at the Canadian Trade-marks Office and there is a very close mark Snug as a Bug with an emphasis on Snug Bug and it's for children's clothing.  You likely would not be able to get a registration in Canada for Snug Bug.  I don't know if that affects you in any way.

I also checked out  the USPTO trademark database and found registration 2527610 on the principal registration for the mark Snug as a Bug for use in association with baby furniture linens.  This is very close to your mark and similar channels of trade.  I think you would have a tough time getting Snug Bug allowed at the USPTO.

It's not just exactly the same but also marks that look or sound similar which can be cited against you.

Free trade-mark registrability opinions come with lots of waivers by the way Wink

A few more impromptu thoughts.  I have searched at the US trademarks database for Snug Bug Bundles and also for Snug Bug Wraps and came up with no hits at all.

Another suggestion of a trendy thing that folks are doing right now is putting two words together in the same word but still keeping the second word capitalized.  For example SnugBug Wraps.

A few thoughts.  Feel free to pick my brain as trademarks are something I make a living at.  or at least try to.

Hi Crypto, the waiver is you should always see your lawyer for real advice, but indeed if you sold your product under the name Snug Bug blankets I think both of these trade-mark owners, Canada and the USA would have a case against you because they are selling in the same channels of trade, namely children's clothing or linen products.  You can have a similar trade-mark if you were selling cars for example but if you are in the same area of trade then you cannot.   I don't think they are the same company though because their marks are slightly different - in design features - and also in the description of their wares.  So it's likely two different companies.   Indeed since they are two different companies I am not sure they can sell their products under their trade-marks in the other person's country.  I have seen this before.  I have a client with a trade-mark that he can only use in Canada since someone else has the registration in the United States.  If you wish to sell in both Canada and the USA I recommend getting trade-mark clearance searches for both countries.  Or you and I could browse the databases to get at least a gut feel for the deadons.  Wink

I think you should try for something that distinguishes away from these folks.  IMHLO (in my humble legal opinion - but I am not giving legal advice in the United States where I have no jurisdiction to practice for US citizens)

ACK!!!  This trademark stuff is  Huh Huh Huh Huh.  The actual name that I want to register is Snug Bug Kids Company.  Blankets will be one of the products that I'm selling.  The actual blanket won't be called a snug bug unless I can get away with it  Grin.  So do you still think I'll have a problem getting a trade mark with the full company name?

Crypto.  I can't check right now - very busy with real life but I need to do the database search for Snug Bug Kids.

That would work in my opinion to distinguish you from someone called Snug as a Bug.  What else are you planning on selling?

you don't trademark the word Company and you will be using your company name on your labels and hang tags and that is considered trade-mark use.  So you should pick a company name that also survives the trade-mark tests.  Otherwise you won't have as much goodwill in the value of your "intellectual property" ie) your trade-marks will be worth squat.

I've been trying to come up with a cute name for your business, Crypto, but nothing comes to mind.  But your blankets look wonderful ... and of course your little model is quite the cutey!
How much are you planning on selling these for?  I may like to buy one, as I'm going to a baby shower on July 6th ....

Cheddar, I will be sewing all the blanks, burp cloths and crib sheets myself.  The robe, slippers and adult size sheets will be added at a later date.  When I can afford to add a professional sewer.

Thai Dyed, I can't give you a price right this second.  I'm still trying to get the price of purchasing the flannel wholesale.  I've seen similar blankets on the internet for 25-40 dollars.  I can tell you that that price is grossly over inflated and mine will be much, much lower.  As soon as I can I'll get you a price.

Pocket, I like Kuddle with a K.  I'll add that to my back up list.  Right now I'm setting with Snug Bug Kids Company.  If I find there are going to be trademark issues then I'll be back to the drawing board and my back up list will come out.  Good suggestion, thanks!

Hi Crypto.  Here's a quick update. I squeezed in the two searches yesterday while waiting for my relatives to arrive from the airport.

Snug Bug Kids comes up with no hits in Canada.

In the USA there are two hits.  I don't have them in front of me. Neither one is exactly the same but they have all three words in their marks.  One is closer than the other.  In any event they relate to services not wares.  Meaning the one is for the service of installing car seats and other one is for running a charity.

I think you have a good chance with Snug Bug Kids.

Good Luck.  I love your blankets and I did get your PM but I have not had a chance to respond.  You are a very kind lady!  We always knew that.  Give Francesca a hug from Wednesday.

By the way Wrapped in Love is not available in the USA.  There is already Wrapped with Love for the wares baby receiving blankets etc.

I think the two that Maggi suggested will work as well but it looks like Snug Bug Kids is also a go.  good luck!

keep in mind that if you want to register these trade-marks in the future someone else may apply before you.  this may mean that you are limited to state rights only and not federal rights.

This is not a legal opinion by the way!

The paperwork is sitting here staring at me.  Since I am a perfectionist about some thing in my life, I have been preforming more research on the name.  What I have found are two web sites using snugbug.  One is in the states and the other is in the UK.  While I don't expect to go international (at least not yet), I really want a company name that isn't similar to something already on the market.  So, I'm sitting here wavering back and forth deciding whether or not to use Snug Bug Kids.  It's really grown on me, so I'm very torn.  Cry

Good for you to keep up the research.  It'svery hard to find a unique name.  You usually are best off to go with a made up name or a name that is associated with something entirely different.

For example, the name Cheddar.  It is usually associated with cheese but if you used it in association with your kids blankets it is more likely that others are not using it in association with kids clothes.

Those other two companies can you give us their names exactly and also what type of business they are in?

Good luck!  Please keep us posted Wink

addams,

Here are those other two web sites I found.   www.snug-bug.com www.snugbugs.co.uk

The first site is in the states and has only a few items show.  They look like diaper covers.

The second site is almost idential to my idea except their blankets are made from fleece.  Beware, you'll need sunglasses to view this site.

OMG! this is breaking my heart.  Let's see if we can start that creative process again.  If you want to sell over the internet that UK company may be an annoyance.  You could just say not available in the UK or available in the UK under a different name.

Folks - any more suggestions?

By the way there is a program on tomorrow on a Canadian News show about calming your baby.  The key is wrapping them up!  We did that all the time with Wednesday and it's a great technique.

Don't despair Crypto we will find the right name for your new company.  What about using some part of your kids names?

what about Snug Love Kids Company

I could find no matches in the Canadian or US trade-marks databases. Indeed I did not find a single trade-mark with the words snug and love in them.  I will check the UK database and get back to you.  This is a good chance for me to check out the various trademarks offices around the world  I havent done that for a while.

OK, it just hit me:  "cuddle buddy" or "cuddle buddies" and give each blanket design a name, like the beanie babies.  Perhaps even give one corner of the blanket a head (do you know what I mean?) for example, a dog, with floppy ears....Ok, I think I might be on to something here.  I would defintely buy one  Cool

Kramer I like this idea too.  In fact I had already thought of it.  Actually I found this web site  http://www.babyemporio.com/ookie/index.html which gave me the idea.  I was thinking of some type of animal instead of a doll.  Wouldn't want to get hit for copyright.  Also, Lillian Vernon sell blankets with puppy dog heads, but they aren't washable.  My daughter has one and that's my grap about it...you can't wash it.  So the object is to design an animal thats washable and doesn't effect someones copyright.

I do like cuddle bunnies, btw.

crypto, to make the head washable, make it terrycloth or flannel instead of plastic (do you know what I mean?) You can detail it with different types of washable materials, such as line the bunny ears with silk (so the kids can suck their thumbs, and rub their noses with the silk) LOL ...  I can picture this sooo clearly...I want one, put me down for your first one! You can name it "Kramer" lol.

Just a thought about a "company" name and the names for the "products" of the company.  I know this was addressed earlier on in the thread.  I love cuddle bunnies (too bad about cuddle buddies) but I don't know about using it for the business name if you are going to sell other items.

I haven't checked out cuddle bunnies yet on the databses but I will when I get a moment.  What I liked about Snug Bug Kids Company is that it made a good company name and not too attached to that one product.

Yes, especially the second example you provided (it even had the satin trim - scarey!)

But I was actually thinking of more of a blanket size and shape, something that they could actually use for more than a security item.

Well, looks like your doing all the right leg work crypto, I hope it works out for you soon and when you need a guinea pig, keep me in mind, I always have little ones to buy for (lots of neices and nephews and this year I even have a "great" nephew!)

I don't know if it appeared before but I have just looked it up.  Not a favourable report.

In trademarks you can't use marks that look OR Sound the same so with KuddleKids you still have to look up Cuddle Kids.  There is a Cuddle Kids in the USA for dolls and that is likely going to be enough to keep you out but I don't know whether baby blankets fall in the same class.  If they fall in a different class then you are OK.  I don't know the classes off hand because in Canada we don't use a classification system like the USA.

Also, IMHO, out of luck in Canada because of this application

http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/1089/trdp108957800e.html

Finally in the USA there is Kuddle Love Kids but it is abandoned and therefore may be available if you are interested in it.  Of course Snug Love Kids also seems to be available - but I am just mentioning it Wink

PS sorry for the red X - I tried to post the screen shot but it is not my area of expertise.

crypto, so sorry your Snug Bug Kids Company name is not working out.  Sad

I was by here earlier, and I gotta say the Cheddar name was an attention getter for me!  Wink

I tried to do some name thinking for you today.  I came up with:
Cuddle Me Do
Snuggle Me Do
Hug Hug Me Do  (where's that hugs smiley when you need it)
