'Race,' 'Big Brother' Get Off to Fast Starts
(Wednesday, July 07 03:52 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) CBS was already doing well this summer with its stable of reruns, but the premieres of "Big Brother 5" and "The Amazing Race 5" gave the network an added jolt Tuesday (July 6).

The two shows, each of which had 90-minute premiere episodes, carried CBS to a ratings win for the night in both total viewers and adults 18-49. Unscripted fare dominated the night as a whole, as NBC's "Last Comic Standing" held its own against CBS' lineup.

"Big Brother" drew about 9.5 million viewers with the introduction of its 13 players and the revelation that two of them -- Michael and Jennifer -- are related. It also posted a 3.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, a big improvement over the reruns that filled the time period earlier in the summer.

"The Amazing Race," which in the past sometimes struggled in the ratings, actually improved on its lead-in. The premiere, in which the 11 teams traveled from Los Angeles to Uruguay, averaged 10.3 million viewers and a 4.3 rating among adults 18-49, the group advertisers prize.
Both the total viewer number and the 18-49 rating were the best for an "AR" episode since the finale of the third race in December 2002.

"Last Comic Standing," meanwhile, held up reasonably well against the final half-hour of "Big Brother" and the start of "The Amazing Race." NBC's top summer series averaged just over 8 million viewers, up a little from the previous week, and tied CBS among adults 18-49 for the 9 p.m. hour.
