Moving to TV News, Neleh Dennis Faces a Heck of a Learning Curve
Neleh Dennis starts Monday on "2 News This Morning," which runs from 5:30 to 8 a.m.
BY VINCE HORIUCHI
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Having a camera in her face morning, noon and night for 39 days was not enough for Layton's Neleh Dennis, the runner-up on the hit television show, "Survivor: Marquesas."
The perky 22-year-old, who just missed taking home a million bucks by one vote in the show's finale last month, is preparing for the cameras again when she becomes the newest reporter for the KUTV, Ch. 2, morning news team. The station is the Salt Lake City affiliate for CBS, the network that airs "Survivor."
Starting Monday, she will report on entertainment and feature stories for "2 News This Morning," which runs from 5:30 to 8 a.m.
"It's going to be so much fun. I love getting out and interacting with people, and it will be perfect for me," Dennis said Wednesday. "This will be very different. I will be talking to the camera instead of avoiding it."
It's the first such gig for Dennis, who was studying psychology at Weber State University. Dennis, who has no journalism experience, has spent the last week learning the ropes from fellow staff members.
"I learned how the whole television thing works, and learned how to read the scripts and hook up all the microphones -- everything from square one," she said.
Though Dennis is green in the reporting field, KUTV news director Steve Charlier says she has another quality that is important.
"She has an infectious personality," he said. "What you saw on TV [on 'Survivor'] is what you get in person."
Dennis learned to become comfortable in front of the camera from her stint on America's most popular reality TV show, and from having all those news cameras following her after the series ran.
"My staff's responsibility and mine is to work with her and teach her how to be a good live reporter and ask good questions and be natural," Charlier said.
Dennis will work full time on the show, reporting on interesting people and entertainment events like festivals, local art shows and charity drives.
"We don't want her to play television reporter," Charlier said. "We just want her to be who she is, a Utah native with a good personality."
Despite her lack of journalism experience, Dennis' hiring was smart, said Con Psarras, managing news editor for rival KSL-TV, Ch. 5.
"She's watchable and got high energy, and it's probably a good move," he said. "She's being hired to have personality on TV, and she has proven to have personality on TV. It doesn't sound to me that she's being hired to walk in the steps of Edward R. Murrow."

New stuff to survive

Neleh Dennis officially joins the KUTV Channel 2 morning show on Monday. The Layton resident and former "Survivor" contestant will cover arts and entertainment. She"ll report in live shots.

Judging from a sneak preview viewers got on Thursday, Dennis is comfortable in the job. Perhaps a little too comfortable.

In her first live interview, with an expert on keeping lawns green during times of drought, Dennis apparently bumped the microphone into her source"s nose, causing him to whip his head back.

Dennis then fought off the giggles while her source finished his presentation.

Putting Dennis on the air is likely to be a ratings booster. Those curious about her career evolution and the Utah fans Dennis earned during "Survivor" will tune in.

Neleh wannabees?

Speaking of "Survivor," KUTV will host local auditions for the CBS show "Survivor" on Monday afternoon.

KUTV will record the required three-minute audition tapes for those wishing to apply and will forward the tapes to CBS. The casting call will take place between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday at the KUTV studios, 3540 W. Technology Drive (2185 South), West Valley City.

Applicants must be 21 or older, and must bring identification. For more information, go to www.kutv.com and click on 2News Links. People who want to make their own audition tapes can visit http:// for the required "Survivor" application form, for auditioning and taping tips, and for tape-mailing instructions.
