hmmm... that's a nice question.... hmmm...

well IMO a movie becomes classic when it had a scene or specific line that is very much remembered or even re-used in another movie.... like....

'You had me with Hello' - Jerry Maguire

My momma used to say.. "Life is like a box of chocolates, you'll never know what you'll get" - Forrest Gump

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn - Gone with the Wind

"Do a deer, a female deer....' - Sound of Music

and the likes... Grin

To me, a classic is a movie that can be enjoyed by every generation... The plot has something that appeals to people across the generation gap. I agree that it it may be to to the dialogue from the movie.

Casabalanca
Gone With The Wind
American Graffity

Some newer ones:

Grease
Saturday Night Fever
St Elmos Fire

Tyler-Geri, with all respect, those movies are not considered "classics".

Here's a list of some of the older classics:

THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951)
ALL ABOUT EVE (1950)
BEN-HUR (1959)
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)
THE BIG SLEEP (1946)
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (1961)
CASABLANCA (1942)
GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY (1941)
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)
THE LITTLE FOXES (1941)
MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947)
MRS. MINIVER (1942)
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939)
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940)
THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES (1942)
THE QUIET MAN (1952)
REBECCA (1940)
ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953)
SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943)
A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN (1945)

It's a Wonderful Life.... It's not Christmas eve unless I watch it.

My favorite line is from Annie, the Bailey families housekeeper

"I was saving for a divorce is case I ever got me a husband"

Cracks me up everytime!

To me a classic is something that doesn't "age." I think some movies are made for a generation, and after that generation they have no meaning to the ones that follow (or for the ones that came before).

Speaking of lines... AFI's 100 most memorable lines is on at the moment... ABC.
