The 'CSI' Phenomenon: Strong Women
Entertainment Weekly
October 7, 2004

There is nothing like a dame and exec producer JERRY BRUCKHEIMER, whose TV dynasty includes all three "CSI" series, "Without a Trace," "Cold Case" and the "Amazing Race," has cut quite a swath on CBS by including intelligent women on each of his shows. From MARG HELGENBERGER to EMILY PROCTER and MELINA KANAKAREDES, not to mention POPPY MONTGOMERY and KATHRYN MORRIS, Bruckheimer has populated his shows with the crème de la crème of actresses.

On tonight's ET, our MARY HART sits down with the producer when he drops by Stage 28 for a one-on-one interview about his fortuitous run. Bruckheimer's reign began five years ago with the launch of the procedural drama "CSI." It was quickly followed by "Without A Trace," "CSI: Miami," "Cold Case" and most recently "CSI: New York." And the top-flight exec producer also found time to try his hand at reality with "Amazing Race."

"I love smart women," Bruckheimer tells Mary. "We try to populate our television shows and our feature films with smart females because I have always had smart women in my life. I have a wonderful wife who keeps me going and is brilliant in her own right -- a writer." (Note: His wife is novelist LINDA BRUCKHEIMER, The Southern Belles of Honeysuckle Way.)

Bruckheimer is modest enough not to take all the credit. He cites producers ANN DONAHUE, CAROL MENDELSOHN and ANTHONY ZUIKER as the driving forces behind the success of the three "CSI" series.

"Ann and Carol came up the hard way and they created these women characters from themselves," Bruckheimer reveals. "There is a little bit of our writers in each of the characters."

Bruckheimer also takes his hat off to LESLIE MOONVES, now Co-President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of Viacom and Chairman of CBS, but formerly an actor, who he attributes as having quite an eye when it comes to successful casting.

"When you hire Marg and the rest of the women, it is easy to characterize them as smart because they are smart as individuals," Bruckheimer concludes. "That comes across on the screen. The screen looks into your soul, it looks into the individual and what's behind those eyes in real life, not just the character they are playing."

I have to say that's one of the things I love about these shows.  The women are not only strong and intellegent, but competent.  In the same token they aren't like these uber buff women who have no flaws, etc.  They are still shown with vulnerabilities and problems, but are generally shown handling them in a competent manner.
