TBS releases 'Gilligan's Island' cast teasers as series sets to debut November 30

By Steve Rogers, 10/12/2004
Reality TV World

Overcoming a clash with last month's Hurricane Ivan that resulted in the evacuation of its marooned castaways and brought a temporary halt to filming, TBS's The Real Gilligan's Island, a reality show remake of the classic 1960's sitcom, has wrapped production and will premiere as previously scheduled on Tuesday, November 30 at 8PM ET/PT

Featuring a special two-hour premiere, The Real Gilligan's Island was filmed on a Gulf of Mexico island where seven reality contestants personifying the characters of the original Gilligan's Island will work together to escape their stranding. While the island's exact location remains a secret, TBS had noted that sustained winds of 90MPH were recorded on the island's beach when its cast and crew were evacuated on September 16.

Despite also keeping the exact identities of its castmembers secret, the network has released a teaser photo and descriptions of the cast. The seven members of The Real Gilligan's Island are:

• A real-life millionaire who owns 26 different companies
• The millionaire's wife, who is a television personality
• A skipper who is "the fleet captain at his local boat club, a commercial fisherman and a harbor master"
• A bumbling first mate who once crashed a two million-dollar boats into each other while working at a marina
• A beautiful small-town girl whose mother, upon learning she'd been cast on the show, made her learn how to open a coconut with a rock and make a coconut cream pie
• A professor from a major California university
• A high-maintenance but fun-loving movie star who, according to the network "will be featured in three movies in 2004" (and whom, according to Star Magazine is Carmen Electra.)

Is it just me, or did they hire Rupaul to play Ginger?

Model/actress Rachel Hunter has been unmasked as the new Ginger on TBS' upcoming reality update of The Real Gilligan's Island. "I always wanted to do a reality show, and this was just the perfect adventure," she tells USA Today, apparently forgetting her stint as a judge on ABC's Are You Hot? (not to mention as Rod Stewart's wife). Hunter will join a real-life skipper, first mate, millionaire couple, farm girl and professor in the Survivor-esque series, which premieres Nov. 30.

Reality Series Features Rachel Hunter
Nov 15, 4:13 PM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Just sit right back, and you'll hear a tale ... a tale of a new reality show. On Monday, "The Real Gilligan's Island" — a new TBS reality show that drops real people who fit the mold of the original 1960s characters onto an island — announced who will play Ginger, the pampered movie star: Rachel Hunter.

Hunter, the swimsuit model turned actress, "shares the flightiness and aloofness of Ginger," according to the TBS Web site.

"She tends to drift and wander without care for what is going on around her."

The other contestants of the show are also chosen to reflect the still familiar sitcom characters, including the Professor (here, a New York University prof.) and the Skipper (a Massachusetts small business owner and, well, a skipper).

The "real" Gilligan is a 20-year-old college guy who works at a marina, and, apparently, "has been preparing for this role his entire life because he is Gilligan."

In the show, the castaways will have to work together to get off an island, and in various contests, will relive scenarios from the classic series.

"The Real Gilligan's Island" premieres Nov. 30 on TBS.

I watched the 1st hour but then switched to TAR so I didn't see who got booted.  I heard it was the two Professor's that went head-to-head and the older one won.

It looks like an okay show...a little hokey, but okay.  I'll watch it again as long as it's not up against any of my favs.
