Fame on the wane for reality TV stars

By TARA MERRIN -- Calgary Sun

Being a reality TV star isn't what it use to be.

Unlike Richard Hatch, who enjoyed months of fame as the first winner of the Survivor series, today's reality contestants are quickly forgotten. Just ask Amazing Race contestants Greg and Brian Smith.

Eliminated last Tuesday, the California brothers are already nearing the end of their 15 minutes of fame.

"We have had a lot of people recognize us, but nothing crazy has happened. Brian is trying to get acting jobs and I'm down here trying to figure things out," says Greg from his Santa Monica home. "It hasn't really changed things very much at all."

Still hoping to capitalize on their new-found celebrity, the brothers formed a sketch comedy group in L.A. and are pursuing careers in show business.

"We signed a contract with CBS, so we can't do much until the end of the race. Hopefully a lot of doors will open for us then."

Greg and Brain, considered one of the strongest teams, ran out of luck last week and become the sixth team eliminated from the worldwide race that sends teams of two speeding across continents

It may have seemed close, but that had more to do with editing than reality, says Greg.

"They didn't show it, but we got lost and drove in the wrong direction for about 45 minutes. We were actually about two hours behind the other teams."

Knowing they were in last place, the brothers took a different approach to the non-elimination round only-the-clothes-on-your-back rule and stripped down to their swim trunks, scarves and hats.

"We thought if we are going to go out, we wanted to go out in style."

We would have loved to win, but we wouldn't change our experience for the world. We got to see all these cool countries and met a lot of great people."

Although many of the teams were upset Survivor winner and runner-up Amber Brkich and Rob Mariano were given another shot at a $1 million prize, Greg says all five remaining teams deserve to win the Amazing Race.

That includes grandparents Meredith and Gretchen who escaped going home when they came in last on the first non-elimination leg of the race.

"At first, we thought they'd be gone right away, but we found out quick they were a pretty good team. That's the great thing about this race -- anybody can win," says Greg.

The Amazing Race 7 airs tonight at 10 p.m. on CFCN and CBS.

i think i like it this way (not being famous sfter a reality show) if i join. because if i join, it would be totally for the experience and maybe the money but not for publicity/fame.

I did not like how this article started of because I felt like it was putting a spin on them.

It made it seemed that after ALL-Stars that Brian just decided he wanted to go into acting and wanted to become famous and TAR was the only way to do it.

Not the case at all because Brian was already doing small acting gigs even before TAR because he did a commercial with Jennifer Anistan and FF.  In Brian's CBS bio it has him as an actor.  Brian isn't trying to become all big and famous he just doing the same stuff he has done before TAR. That is trying to survive in the real world with small acting jobs.  A positive from TAR is that  the brothers were able to form a sketch comedy group.

As for Greg I think this article assumed that he too was trying to become an actor.  Greg actually was a bouncer before this and Brian got Greg to do the sketch comedy group thing with him.   I don't think he was trying to become an actor.

As Greg said in the article nothing has changed that much for both of them and I don't think he is too sad about it either.

From this article I don't think Brian or Greg mind if their 15 minutes of fame are over but I they would appreciate anything that comes their way or whatever doors open up as stated in the article.
