Fishermen's rights `infringed' at Tarutao
Mongkol Bangprapa

The Law Society of Thailand says local fishermen's rights are being infringed during filming of the American TV gameshow Survivor on Satun's Tarutao island.

Some fishermen say people in boats have chased them away.

Warin Thiamcharas, of the society's environmental committee, said the ban on fishing trawlers was a serious violation of human rights.

It should not have occurred in Thailand, one of the freest countries in Southeast Asia. Thai citizens had the right to go anywhere in Thai territory.

Now, the government is creating extra-territorial rights by allowing foreigners to seek benefits and enjoy privileges over Thai people. It thinks about business benefits and its image without considering local people's rights.''

The Satun governor has asked the production team to allow fishermen seeking shelter to drop anchor.

Filming of show on Tarutao island upsetting fishermen
Kultida Samabuddhi

Fishermen in Satun province say the Survivor reality show on Tarutao island is costing them money.

Since filming began this month the production team had stopped fishing boats from docking at the island. Boats were also unable to fish in waters within two kilometres of the shore.

The company uses patrol boats to stop our boats getting near. This is hurting fishermen because marine life is plentiful in the area. Moreover, we have to dock at the island to get fresh water,'' said Nan Sayan, member of the Satun Fishermen Group.

The National Film Board and the Forestry Department granted CBS the right to make the television show in April. Filming runs until July 18.

Suthichai Viriyakosol, chief of Tarutao marine national park, said fishing boats could disrupt shooting. The production crew had no choice but to keep them away.

The show takes only 40 days, which is not so long. I hope the locals will co-operate with the company,'' said Mr Suthichai.

He said 250 staff were taking part in the production. Forestry chief Plodprasop Suraswadi had told nine officers to monitor filming.

M.L. Sidhichai Jayanit, the National Film Board's secretary, meanwhile, denied CBS staff stopped fishermen from landing at the island.

There is no report that CBS has been using patrol boats to chase fishermen away. The board would stop the company doing such a thing.

The island is closed at the moment because it is the monsoon season. Very few fishermen visit the island,'' said M.L. Sidhichai. Around 100 local people had been hired to work on the production, he said.

and they're really hoping that CBS will give them some to make up for it...

Would someone show me the paragraph of the Declaration of Fundamental Human Rights that lists fishing as one of them?
