The term bird flu or avian flu is used to describe the influenza viruses that infect primarily the birds' population. In fact , birds appear to be a natural reservoir of flu viruses-15 subtypes influenza a virus are known to be circulating in bird populations. Humans have caught the disease but only in small numbers as a few very rare cases have been noticed in the Far East. Many form of bird flu virus cause only mild symptoms in the birds or no symptoms at all. However, some of the viruses produce a highly contagious and rapidly fatal disease, leading to severe epidemics. These virulent viruses are known as "highly pathogenic avian influenza" and it is these viruses that cause particular concern. One such avian flu virus is currently infecting chickens in Asian countries. Flu is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans (nose, throat, and lungs). Influenza is an ailment which is different from, and usually much more severe than , the "common cold". It takes about 1-2 days from the time of exposure to the virus (i.e., infection) to the development of symptoms. This period is called the "incubation period." The symptoms of bird flu normally depend on the virus which has caused the infection. These symptoms are usually referred to as "flu-like symptoms." in addition, people infected with influenza complain of moderate or severe malaise and fatigue. Illness can last for up to 1-2 weeks, although fever generally lasts only 3-8 days. Symptoms of avian influenza in humans cause similar symptoms to other types of influenza like, fever, cough , sore throat, muscle aches, eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases, and other severe and life-threatening complications. The fatality of the infection will depend mostly on the state of the immune system of an infected person. Till date , a specific anti-avian influenza vaccine for humans is not readily available. However, the centers for disease control and prevention of the U.S. have suggested that the anti-viral drug tamiflu or oseltamivir phosphate is the effective one for the treatment of H5N1 infection. It belongs to a group of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors, and it attacks the influenza virus and prevents it from spreading inside the body. There is no need to panic if you see any symptoms. First visit your nearby doctor. Discuss the progress of your flu with him. Tell him why you have this fear. If he is not satisfied he is bound to refer you to dedicated "bird flu" quarantined wards of a nearby hospital. You will be immediately put on the best drug for treating bird flu - tamiflu. This wonder drug launched by Roche AG. It contains oseltamivir, which effectively acts to keep in check the H5N1 strain of influenza virus. However is effective only if taken in the early stages of the deadly disease. This miracle drug created by Roche pharmaceuticals has lately been approved by the food and drug administration U.S.A as a cure for influenza. It has been accepted as a treatment of both A and B types of flu. Although the FDA has warned that tamiflu drug is not a substitute for the annual flu vaccine. The drug is a neuraminidase inhibitor. These inhibitors treat the cause of influenza infection by inhibiting the critical neuraminidase protein on the surface of the virus. As the flu multiplies, neuraminidase enables it to move on and infect other host cells (left). When you inhibit neuraminidase (right), the flu can't escape from its host cell , which prevents it from spreading. Tamiflu treats flu at its source by attacking the virus that causes the flu, rather than simply masking symptoms. Tamiflu should be taken twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) for five days. Tamiflu can be taken with or without food. You should complete the entire treatment of ten capsules, even if you are feeling better. Never share tamiflu with anyone, even if they have the same symptoms. It is important that you begin your treatment with tamiflu as soon as possible from the first appearance of your flu symptoms. Tamiflu capsules should be stored at room temperature below 77c) and kept in a dry place. Keep this medication out of the reach of children. Apart from taking tamiflu dosage, one should careful while maintaining proper hygiene like wash your hands frequently, and avoid situations such as sharing cups and utensils that can spread the virus to others. All these efforts will cumulatively promote to a healthier environment. You should not take tamiflu if you are allergic to oseltamivir phosphate or any other ingredients of tamiflu. Before starting treatment , make sure your doctor knows if you are taking any other medication or have any type of kidney disease. Common side effects of tamiflu include nausea, vomiting, headache, and fatigue. Vomiting was reported more often among children who received a twice-daily dose of the drug than among those given tamiflu once a day. The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting. Taking tamiflu with food may reduce the potential of these side effects. If you notice any side effects not mentioned - or if you have any concerns about the side effects you are experiencing, please inform your healthcare expert. Tamiflu can reduce the chances of attracting the H5N1 virus when the flu out break looms freely around you. So the myth has at least a vent for fresh air; blow hard, ward out the spirit , take a deep breath and live life to the best extent, you have the support of tamiflu.
