Basically, the guys didn't live up to expectations. Some bright spots, some very low ones. Let's just say there's a lot of room for improvement.

The sixth season of American Idol has already reached what could be an uncivil low point for the entire series: the clipped but mean exchange between Chris Sligh and Simon Cowell. Sligh, after Simon gave a not-all-that-painful knock to his performance of "Typical" by Mute Math, suggested that at least he'd picked a song more cutting-edge than any music associated with Il Divo or the Teletubbies dissing two credits from Simon's producing resume. (He's right about Il Divo, but the Teletubbies album was all that fans of Po, Winky, Tinky or whatever could expect or want.) Simon shot back by comparing Chris to the Teletubbies, with implicit emphasis on "tubby." Eh-oh!

Simon was essentially right: Chris may look like Jack Osbourne, but all I hear so far is Elton John sloppily fronting a rock band. Still, the honorable judge went way too far. He and Ryan Seacrest also got snippy with each other, but that's part of their complex yet enduring magic.

The whole two hours was a pretty morose experience. Sundance Head sang "Nights in White Satin" with his arms outstretched and booming notes as if he were Pavarotti (or maybe just Il Divo). Sanjaya Malakar, 17, one of the most promising vocalists in the audition rounds, wiped out with Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet." Why so bizarrely subdued? It could have been a funeral oration. Paul Kim started off singing too low, and spent the rest of his performance as if trying to climb out of a ravine. (And he has to wear some shoes, okay? That stage might be germy.) Chris Richardson sang Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Wanna Be" with a very annoying, aggressive rocking motion as if he were a metronome.

I can count the truly outstanding vocals on one hand one finger: Blake Lewis dropped all that beat-boxing shtick and sang Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know" with a smooth pop confidence that sounded like a happier Morrissey. Blake is the only male singer I wouldn't want to see voted off right now.

The girls are on tonight, and I can't imagine how they won't make for a better two hours.

Oh yes, i totally support Simon. When Sanjaya sang his song, i caught the lyrics too and was laughing hard at it, after which Simon mentioned that as well.

And i also switched off the TV by the eleventh performer. I guess there was nothing even better to watch.

Whoa... the guys' performance really surprised me. I was expecting them to do SO MUCH BETTER than that! It was a really boring night, I hope they'll do MUCH BETTER next week. Their performance was really disappointing. Even Blake, whose performance Simon called the best so far, was pitchy. Phil was good compared to the others, but even that lacked energy.
