HE WAS not even a martyr for democracy but the outpouring of grief from across the land over the death of Fernando Poe Jr. came like a river.

By some accounts, not since opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was murdered on the Manila airport tarmac upon his return from exile in August 1983 to challenge a dictator has there been such a massive expression of popular grief as that which came in the wake of Poe's death from a stroke early yesterday.

And he was just a movie actor, a high school dropout, a political novice who failed in his bid for the presidency, though he nearly unseated the incumbent.

In Poe's hometown of San Carlos City in Pangasinan province, residents began tying black ribbons around trees and lampposts. In a Manila suburb, a small restaurant owner closed her eatery so she could go to the chapel where the actor's remains were to be brought for viewing.

In Dasmariñas town, Cavite province, a mother of three, Mercy Ramallosa, stayed up all night listening to news on the radio about the death of Poe.

"I did not notice that there were tears in my eyes until later. I did not know that I was crying," Ramallosa said.

Even the Muslims in Manila’s Quiapo district are walking slowly "as if carrying a heavy heart."

Many were in tears as thousands of ordinary Filipinos filed past the metallic, maroon coffin where their king lay in his favorite suit.

Some of those who came to view Poe's remains at the Arlington chapel in Pasig City were in slippers. Others looked unwashed.

Poe, 65, was in a black suit and a blue tie with white polka dots.

Outside the chapel, several people sat on the pavement and on the grass, weeping and consoling each other.

Most of the fans had come from cities in Metro Manila. Others had arrived by jeep, some by tricycle, still others just walked.

His remains were to be transferred later last night to the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City.

The actor is to be buried on Dec. 22 but no decision has been reached on where, said Sorsogon Representative Francis Escudero, Poe's spokesperson during the May presidential election campaign. Earlier plans to bury Poe at the La Loma Cemetery where his father, Fernando Poe Sr. lies, are not final, he said.

At the Santo Domingo Church, Poe's coffin was to be placed at the right corner, said actor Rez Cortez, chair of the National Coordinating Center for (Poe) Volunteers.

As early as 6 p.m., long before the coffin was to arrive, hundreds of people had begun gathering in the church grounds.

Cortez said everything had been taken care of, including liturgical services and the flow of an expected tens of thousands of people who would come to view Poe's remains.

A trailer van which Poe used when he was shooting films will be the temporary quarters of the Poe family, according to Cortez.

"There will be a Mass and after that it will be open to the public," Cortez said.

In Congress, a senator urged that the man simply called FPJ be conferred the National Artist award.

News of Poe's illness and death gripped a nation where movie heroics offer a rare diversion from dire poverty.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo mourned his death, saying: "Fernando Poe Jr. was a good man, a worthy adversary in politics and a great Filipino."

The United States, through its embassy in Manila, also offered its condolences.

"Mr. Poe will be remembered with great fondness as much for his singular role as the 'Da King' of Philippine cinema as for his entry into the political arena as a presidential candidate," the embassy said in a statement.

Most beloved son

"We extend our deepest condolences to his widow, his family, and friends as well as to his many movie fans and political supporters in their hour of loss."

San Carlos City mourned its most beloved son as residents began hanging black ribbons from trees.

"This is just our way of paying tribute to him," said Clarence Cagampan, chair of Barangay Palaris in the city proper.

Poe's late father, Fernando Sr., was a native of this city.

I. V. Delgado closed her restaurant in Novaliches, Quezon City, and rented a jeep to go to the chapel, where Poe's remains were temporarily laid. Some 15 people -- the restaurant's crew -- went with her.

"We are all loyal fans. We are all pro-FPJ," she said. Her cook brought a photo of Poe with him.

Today, Cordillera leaders will perform a cañao (ritual feast) for the late actor. The ritual involves the butchering of pigs.

"We want his soul to be appeased," said community leader Nicolas Cawed, referring to the political divisions that fractured the country after the May elections. "We also want that we will not be visited by bad luck."

Never mind that Poe's wake will be held in a Catholic enclave, the Santo Domingo Church.

Heavy Muslim hearts

Several Muslims plan to go there to mourn the loss of not just a movie superstar but a kindred soul who understood and shared the pride of Muslims, said Datu Amerol Gulam Ambiong, chair of the Metro Manila Muslim Peace and Order Coordinating Council.

"The people here [at the Islamic Center in Quiapo] are not smiling. They walk slowly, as if carrying a heavy heart," Ambiong said.

Senator Ralph Recto urged the government to pay the highest tribute to Poe by making him a National Artist.

"He did not hold public office but his influence was greater than those who had. Fate did not make him president, but to the people he was ‘Da King,’" Recto said, urging senators to pass a resolution supporting such a declaration.

Poe's acts of charity

"For many families, Sundays were for talking to God, and watching Da King [in moviehouses)," Recto said.

Vice President Noli de Castro also voiced his sadness, saying: "He has been known not only for his greatness in the local movie industry, but also for his philanthropic deeds for the less privileged which were worthy to emulate."

Former Senator Loren Legarda, Poe's running mate in the May 10 elections, said: "He will be missed by his multitude of fans and supporters who sincerely believe in the justness and correctness of the cause he fought for."

Soon after Poe died, a member of his staff said on radio that his makeup artist of over 40 years had gone to the funeral parlor to "make him handsome for the last time" before his body was taken to a church for public viewing.

Unfulfilled dream

Among Poe's visitors while he lay in a coma in the intensive care unit at St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City was former first lady Imelda Marcos.

"It is sad that Fernando Poe Jr., a truly good person, died of a broken heart, denied his vision of a dreamland country for the Filipino people," said Marcos.

For an hour yesterday, the death of Poe preoccupied the Senate, which was already pressed for time in its bid to pass Ms Arroyo's tax measures.

But the senators could not help but join in the national mourning.

Seventeen senators who were present joined Senator Jinggoy Estrada in co-authoring a Senate resolution "expressing the profound condolence of the Senate on the untimely demise of Poe and honoring his contribution to Philippine socio-cultural and political development."

Among other things, the resolution recognized Poe for having throughout his life stood for "integrity, decency, sincerity, hard work and perseverance, qualities that have endeared him to the hearts and minds of the Filipino people."

Only one of his kind

"FPJ was probably the only presidential candidate who turned down contributions by the millions even as he needed the money whenever he perceived them to be 'investments' in his presidency," Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said.

"FPJ was in my mind, sui generis. A man alone. A class act unto himself," Pimentel added.

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago said it was rare for a man to leave "such a strong impression" on the people.

Santiago said Poe was married to Susan Roces, who "matches his credentials in good breeding and culture."

Jinggoy Estrada said Poe was his godfather, counsel, friend and adviser.

"FPJ lived his life the way he lived his screen roles. He was the champion of the oppressed; the good, God-fearing, kind-hearted man who would come to the rescue."

Grief in the mountains

The Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing the New People's Army also expressed their condolences.

"Let not his death weaken the resolve of the millions of his supporters to continue the principles and belief that FPJ had stood and fought for. They have to continue his fight," Communist spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said in a mobile phone interview.

If you remember, he's the main opponent of our now president Arroyo during the May 2004 election. Imagine if he WAS our president, then he died. It would be a very short term.

I don't believe he could run our country, but he had the ability to unite our country during the time when we were divided.
