Mosquito Control

Here's a gadget I just read about today for controlling mosquitoes without using all those chemicals.  No clue if it works but it intrigues me.

MOSQUITOCONTRO PLUS by Lentek International $14.99 USD

World's first electronic repeller that uses sonic pulses to replicate the wing-beat frequency of the dragonfly, the mosquito's most feared enemy.  It also imitates the wing-speed sound of the male mosquito, used to ward off females after mating (the ones that bite).  Worn as a wristwatch, around the ankle or attached to a belt or pocket.

My parents have something like this (Wisconsin has world class mosquitos!)  FWIW theirs did not seem to work.  It might not be the exact same product though.

I have never used one of those contraptions, but FWIW, a natural remedy (of sorts) to control mosquitos would be to hang a bat house, purple martin house, or wren house in your backyard.

Those 2 types of birds and bats are supposed to eat hundreds of mosquitos every day.

great suggestion Kramer - I always have wanted a bat house in the yard to be honest.  Really!  My dad has asked for a purple martin house up at his cottage.  I thought purple martins needed long poles of some sort or other though.  I need to look more into that.

My concern about all these electronic gadgets is that the animals become accostomed to the sounds since they don't vary. Also if the mosquito is hungry and on your arm - I think they may take a nibble anyways - despite some gadget on your ankle.

yes, purple martin house's have to be on rather tall poles, but you can order the pole with the bird house.

Otherwise, wren houses are rather small and can hang from shepard's hooks near your bushes (they like the camoflauge) and I would recommend putting the bat house in a tree somewhere (if you have one).

the wren house at my parents cottage seems to be perfectly placed.   Kramer you are a wealth of information!

We have a tree in our back yard - perhaps it would work for the bats.  Wednesday keeps asking how she can see a bat.  Maybe we can arrange that for her.

at the risk of sounding like a geek, another piece of information is that wrens will create several nests every year.  The male wren builds multiple nests and then has a special mating call that he uses to attract a female.  The female wren shows up and selects the nest that she is most comfortable with and then she lays eggs and nests on them while the male wren caters to her and her little babies (it is so sweet).

So, the moral of this story is that you might want to put out a couple of wren houses to increase the odds that you will actually get them to nest (and eat your pesky bugs).

addams, if Wednesday likes bats, I hope you've read her Stellaluna by Janell Cannon.  It's a great children's book and belongs on my favorite children's book list for sure.

thanks for the suggestion about the book Cheddar. It's a great idea.  We have not read it yet but know the book you mean.  Will try for it at the library.

Well Kramer - look what you have done Wink  Got me all interested in birds and bats etc.  Next thing I know I find myself here http://www.purplemartin.org/mentorprogram/mentorON.html

Addams, could little Wednesday's interest in bats have something to do with being a member of the Addams family?   Huh  Just wondering?  Seriously, bats are great to have around, they do eat hundreds of those blood sucking skeeters.  They are great to have around UNLESS they are in your fireplace chimney.............but that's a whole other story and I won't get into it now.

A non electronic method of mosquito control:

Stand next to me!  I swear they all swarm to me no matter who else is around.  If I have bug repellant on, the find the one spot I missed and zoom in there.

Hi!

I'm just curious but here in Canada - do you folks have Orioles or Cardinals?  I've seen the beautiful Gold Finches about.

I brought my birdbath from Ok. and it's in my kids backyard.  I have yet to place some bird feeders though.  I'm worried about putting our feathered friends in jeopardy by feeding them because my daughter has a cat named Max.

There will be another 'skeeter fogging tonight here in parts of Winnipeg.  Seems the larviciding efforts failed earlier so it's back to square one.

Personally - I just keep a few cans of OFF! handy at the front and back doors and garage.  My daughter can't use it right now because she's breastfeeding the baby.  In turn, we can't take him outside much because of the danged pests.

Man - you canucks sure have some big ole skeeters.....
