nope didn't get the soup Sad maybe next time.. definitely am going back! well they sure did a great job on the boardwalk  i was very impressed... my son went to atlantic city new jersey for his vacation and they had to buy *beach tags* ( 4 dollars a day or 8 dollars a week) to access the beaches!  i had never heard of that.. i am so glad they do not do that at virginia beach! i spend so much money there i don't need to buy a beach tag also! we stayed in the courtyard marriot which was really very nice and had a great view of the ocean.. i got really spoiled there.. i loved walking the boardwalk.. great exercise and wonderful view.. anyway i am missing it  and i just got back Smiley

Dobie, I'm so glad you had good beach weather and a good time. Beach tags huh? I've never heard of having to pay to go onto a beach, especially if your hotel is right on the beach! I love that boardwalk at Virginia Beach too, it's wonderful for strolling along the beach front, as well as for people watching.  Grin

Well, I am finally home from my vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

I had a wonderful trip and packed so much in the time that I was gone.

The first day of travel, Mr. Kramer and I traveled to Washington DC to spend the day visiting all of the historical monuments and the white house, as well as the Vietnam Memorial. We had dinner in Georgetown and had a very wonderful day! We then spent the night at my very best friends home in Maryland.

The second day of travel we drove through Virginia and into North Carolina. We arrived at the Ocean Front Beach house that we rented at about 3 PM in the afternoon. It was scalding hot out and all I could think about was getting to the water and fulfilling a promise I made to Irishlass to dip my bare toesies into the sand for her

To get to the water, you have to walk up and down a sand dune. A scalding hot sand dune. Needless to say, from day one I had blisters on the bottoms of my toes

Into the water...ah yes, the beautiful sound of the Ocean waves, the wonderfully inviting never ending ocean....full of salt water!! LOL! You have to understand, I come from the state of fresh water lakes, it always takes me by surprise when we visit the ocean. I swallowed about 2 gallons of salt water and grossly enough, had salt water pouring out of my nose for the next day and a half......sigh....ok, so I was off to a rough start.

Until....I bought a body board to surf with (who can resist the temptation of the waves of the ocean, oh yeah, and the little kids make it look real easy  ). Can you say FACE PLANT? Because I can say it and feel it at the same time. The seas are very angry for over aged novice surfers, my friend. But I had a blast, nonetheless, bruises and sprained back and all.

Luckily I had taken plenty of Motrin with me.

By now I have learned that I am not as flexible as I was when I was, oh, say 10. That when you go into the ocean, you have to close your mouth, your eyes, not breathe through the nose, and perhaps most importantly of all, past 12 noon, wear watershoes on the sand.

Once I was able to finally flowing into the rythym of things, my trip seemed to become instantaneously more enjoyable.

I did not give up on the body board and eventually, could do it quite well. I have come home with an awesome tan and a lot of wonderful memories.

I ate dozens of crab legs until they finally sought revenge (I stepped on a crab in the ocean and it bit me!)

I swam with Dolphins and Atlantic Sting Rays (and probably a lot of other sea animals that I did not see!!)

I visited so many historical spots, Roanoke Island, the North Carolina Aquarium, the Elizabethan Gardens, the Lost Colony, Fort Raleigh, the Wright Brothers Memorial, Cape Hatteras Light House, Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Carrituck Lighthouse, the horses of Corolla and many more things.

When we left, I felt sad to go but anxious to get home to see my two cats (Kramer and Emma)  I guess I was feeling a bit homesick.

We went home through Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley (Blue Ridge Mountains). We traveled through West Virginia, which made the Shenandoah Valley look tame  We finally came up through Pennsylvania, Ohio and back into Michigan.....it was sure nice to see some familiar street signs.

Vacation is wonderful and we had a wonderful wonderful time. But its always good to be back home. I missed everyone here. I will post some pics when I have the film developed.

Oooo, photos! I love when ppl post photos Krams! Sounds like you had a grand time. What did you think of the humongous sand dunes? I was amazed the first time I saw those things. We have dunes at the Gulf, but itsy bitsy ones compared to those skyscrapers. Wink

Hi dobie, yes, we did hit bad traffic by DC (but it seems to be the norm there!)  We passed not far from Virginia Beach (and it sounds wonderful there!) We could have vacationed together! LOL Smiley

If you do decide to go to the outer banks, it is beautiful and a lot of people (Irishlass, spf15) can give you really good suggestions on what do do, not do, see, not see, etc...  I would recommend it, even if it meant a few extra hours in the car Wink

Hey liberty Smiley

Are you joking? I apologize if you aren't and the question seems strange,  but in Michigan, the sand dunes off of Lake Michigan tower over the sand dunes on the outer banks.

I would say that the sand dunes on the outerbanks are as tall as a house, while the sand dunes on Lake Michigan are about as tall as 4 houses (minimum) and more along the size of a skyskraper.

It took about 2 minutes to climb the sand dune to get to the ocean in the outer banks, in Michigan, it could take a solid hour to climb one sand dune.

Here is a link to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes off of Lake Michigan:  http://www.nps.gov/slbe/

Here is a link to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes (which are positioned in between Silver Lake and Lake Michigan:
http://www.silverlakesanddunes.com/about.html

Here is a link to the Cape Hatteras National Wildlife Refuge in the Outer Banks:  http://www.hatteras-nc.com/CHNS/

Perhaps some of the pics on the web sites can give you a better idea of the size.

Welcome home Kramer.  It sounds like you made the most of your time at the Outer Banks.  Sorry to hear about the blisters and the crab bite.  Did Kramer and Emma get a catnip cigar from Jeanine's Cat House?

Lordy, I had no idea! Well you see... I've never been to Michigan LOL. The dunes I grew up with on the Gulf, and most at other places I've been, are just little bumps with sea oats growing on. Most are easy walking, and even often have boardwalks from the houses or hotels right over them to the beach. The dunes at the Outer Banks, and especially the ones at the Wright Bros. Memorial, looked immense to me LOL. I guess our claim to fame at our Gulf beaches here is the sugar white sand cause we have puny dunes.  Grin

I did visit the cathouse, IL, but didn't make any purchases (if you can believe that! LOL).  Kramer is a solid black cat and Emma is a green (yes, I said green Smiley ) tabby cat.  She didn't have anything that even resembled either of them (believe it or not) and I was afraid that if I bought anything with catnip, I might end up taking a few stray cats home with me!

So, I returned empty handed to my furbabies, but they were sure glad to have their servant slave mommy back home to brush them, feed them, and yes, even pet them in her sleep! sigh....my cats own me.
