LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Are Alan Rickman and Dante Smith an odd screen pairing? Most definitely. The former Royal Academy of Dramatic Art thespian will team up with New York-based underground rapper-turned-actor Mos Def ("Dante Terrell Smith" on his birth certificate) in the HBO original movie "Something the Lord Made."

After more than six years of gestating, the Peter Silverman ("We Were the Mulvaneys") period script has found a home with Emmy winner Joseph Sargent ("Miss Rose White," "Jaws: The Revenge") directing. The film, which is still in development, will be executive produced by Robert W. Cort, David Madden and Julian Krainin, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Something the Lord Made" tells the true story of Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas, the white surgeon and black lab technician who were heart surgery pioneers. Working at Vanderbilt and later Johns Hopkins, Blalock (Rickman) and Thomas (Mos Def) worked on several breakthrough in cardiac surgery including the greater use of plasma transfusions and the Blalock-Taussig shunt.

A progressive hip-hop artist who recorded with De La Soul and Bush Babees before releasing his full length debut album, "Black on Both Sides" in 1999, Mos Def has carved out a diverse acting career in a very short time. He has appeared in Spike Lee's "Bamboozled," the Oscar-winning "Monster's Ball" and the summer blockbuster "The Italian Job." He also earned acclaim appearing in New York and London in the play "Topdog/Underdog."

Rickman won an Emmy in 1996 for his performance in the telefilm "Rasputin." His major film credits include "Die Hard" and "Sense and Sensibility." Upcoming roles include reprising his work as Professor Severus Snape in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." He is also part of the ensemble of the romantic comedy "Love Actually."
