CBS Unveils New 'Early Show' Team

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - CBS has announced the new lineup for "The Early Show" -- viewers will now wake up to Harry Smith, Hannah Storm, Julie Chen and Rene Syler on the morning news program.
The revamped show will debut at 7 a.m. ET Monday, Oct. 28, with what the network promises as a "more flexible and spontaneous format." The four anchors will report the top stories of the day as well as interviews and features, but with more interaction with each other.
"First and foremost, the new 'Early Show' is a news program, so we'll continue to provide viewers with the stories and issues of the day, as well as local weather and news," says Andrew Heyward, president of CBS News. "But our anchors will also give viewers a more spontaneous broadcast with four distinct personalities adding their own interests to the mix. The result will be a lively, unconventional and engaging program."
"The Early Show" has languished in third place among the network morning shows in its three years on the air, trailing NBC's "Today" and ABC's "Good Morning America."
The new group of hosts will at least give CBS a different look from its rivals, both of which use a two-person host team.
"In addition to being free from the conventional format of anchors simply alternating stories for two hours, when news warrants, our anchors won't be chained to the studio," adds Michael Bass, senior executive producer of the morning broadcast. "We'll showcase their diverse strengths and interests and give viewers a distinctive alternative in the morning."
Smith worked for CBS News for 13 years before becoming the host of A&E's "Biography" series in 1999. He was a regular contributor to "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather," "CBS News Sunday Morning" and "48 Hours." He was the co-anchor of "CBS This Morning" from 1987-96. Smith will continue to host "Biography" in addition to his new duties.
Chen has been news anchor and substitute anchor on "The Early Show" since its November 1999 debut. She has also hosted the CBS prime-time reality show "Big Brother" for three seasons. Chen has sat in as anchor for the "CBS Morning News" and "The Early Show's" predecessor, "This Morning."
Storm spent the last 10 years as an anchor and reporter at NBC Sports, hosting coverage of the Olympics, the National Basketball Association, major league baseball and Wimbledon. She was the first female solo anchor of a network's major sports package when she hosted NBC's coverage of the NBA (1997-2002) and baseball, including three World Series (1995, '97 and '99).
Syler arrives from CBS-owned Dallas station KTVT, where she has anchored the noon and 6 p.m. newscasts since February 2000.
