Steve Martin Returns as Oscar Host
Thu, Nov 7, 2002 01:00 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Steve Martin will be the host for the 75th Anniversary Academy Awards, ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday (Nov. 7).

The diamond-anniversary Oscars will be Martin's second as host; he also fronted the 2001 telecast, for which he received mostly positive reviews. Whoopi Goldberg served as host in 2002.

"I'm very pleased to be hosting the Oscars again, because fear and nausea always make me lose weight," Martin jokes.

Gil Cates, producer of the Oscar telecast, says working with a host who's done the job before makes his job somewhat easier. And since the 2003 ceremony is a milestone for the academy, that may be especially important.

"It is wonderful to work with a host who's done it before," Cates says of Martin. "A host who's witty, clever, sharp, intelligent, quick on his feet and always on top of the unfolding action. Wait, I've forgotten something. Oh yeah, and outrageously funny."

The 2003 Oscars are scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET Sunday, March 23. ABC will begin its broadcast from the Kodak Theatre at 8 p.m. with a half-hour of arrivals coverage.
