The Amazing Race Asia Discussion
« on: Feb 12th, 2006, 3:41am »

This is in our local newspaper, TODAY.

Get ready for the Asian version of The Amazing Race
By Jeanine Tan, TODAY

SINGAPOREANS have seen The Amazing Race on television. Now they can take part.

AXN Asia, which is based in Singapore, has bought the rights to localise the Emmy Award-winning show from Buena Vista International TV Asia Pacific, the American company that owns the format.

This means there will soon be an Asian version of The Amazing Race, with Asian contestants competing against each other on Asian terrain. So, not only will Singaporeans get a chance to compete, the programme may also be filmed in Singapore.

According to Ricky Ow, general manager of SPE Networks Asia, which is the parent company of AXN, the Asian version will debut in the second half of next year. Auditions will be held soon and Singaporeans will be invited to participate.

"The Asian version will cover the whole of Asia and there may be opportunities to travel outside of Asia. But of course, the key components will be in Asia," he said.

Ow declined to reveal the budget of the Asian version, but said that it was in the "multi-million region".

The Asian edition will certainly not be inferior to its American counterpart. United States producers of the original programme will be consultants for the Asian version. And while the prize money for the winning team will not be US$1 million ($1.7 million) as it is in the American version, it will be "lucrative".

When asked about the possibility of language barriers being an issue when contestants of different nationalities were pitted against each other, Ow pointed out that that was where the fun would come in.

"It won't be a huge issue since the programme is in English, but it will be a fun element to see how the contestants communicate, since English is spoken differently in each country," he said.

Ow encouraged fans of The Amazing Race to write in to AXN at [email protected] to offer suggestions on what they think should be included in the Asian version of the programme. - TODAY

The prize for the winning team is US $100,000

Which is like... "ONLY" one zero lesser than the US version.

I haven't heard of applications yet here in the Philippines, but we'll see! I have a job which I don't think would let me have 30-day vacations unless they fire me, which I don't want to happen lol. I'll wait for it.

I think, If you actually want to go on the Amazing Race, and have a chance to get to the interview stage, you should try no matter.

well.. the rules doesn't say that they cannot as long as both of them live and work in an Asian country except those in the Middle East and Japan...

actually I even had thoughts of asking a friend who work in Singapore to be my partner by I opted my cousin who is a fan also...

the only problem with that maybe is in preparing the video... one of them should fly to the other to make their video...

The Asian edition of The Amazing Race is a reality game show based on the American television program of the same name and nature. The title is billed as The Amazing Race Asia.

On October of 2005, CBS has optioned The Amazing Race for franchising to other countries. The Asian cable TV network AXN is among the first to acquire the rights to produce a version for its territory. The show is produced in association with Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific (BVITV-AP). Applications for the first installment are currently being accepted and will close on March 15, 2006. Filming is likely to begin in May or June 2006. Participating countries will include all of Asia except Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Middle East.

Many of the same rules and regulations as the American series will apply to the Asian edition. The current plan is twelve teams of two and participants are required to be able to communicate in English. Contestants will come from various Asian countries and not limited to one country of origin. The ultimate prize is US$100,000 whilst the American show gives away US$ 1 million. Regarding the smaller amount of the grand prize money, Mr Ricky Ow, general manager of SPE Networks-Asia which runs AXN, has this to say, "It is not really about the money but the adventure and opportunity to be in one of the world's greatest reality shows."

I wouldn't even care about the money to be on the show. It's the experience that's going to tempt many people to apply to be on the race.

Singapore will probably be the starting Pit Stop and the Finish line, since AXN Asia is based there, right?

I don't think so. I think they will always have starting line in different countries in Asia.

That's if there's a T A A R 2 lol. Cause Singapore doesn't have too many places of interest.

But i don't think AXN base is in SG, i always thought it's in Philippines.

A news here reported that Aubrey Miles, an actress here, might be in Amazing Race Asia because she was away the past few months. When asked where she has been, she said it's confidential and we just have to wait until November to find out.

I hope she's on it!!!

Sharon and Melody

Where they’re from: Singapore

How they’re related: They’re former schoolmates.

The 411: Sharon and Melody were former schoolmates but they only bonded after graduating. Melody, who has appeared in films and television shows in Singapore, is an extrovert who loves sports. Sharon is a self-described office slave.

Their strengths: Their connection, their unified faith and single-minded focus--to win the Amazing Race Asia and have fun along the way. They both did a 10k Marathon in 2005 and survived stronger than ever.

Their fears: They are wary of things they will be asked to do. Melody has a fear of heights while Sharon is dreading “ambiguity and eating bugs.”

Their strategy: To focus on themselves rather than the other teams, making themselves their own greatest opponents. Their primary aim is to do the best they possibly can and come out with a stronger friendship, stronger mindsets and better people. Says Sharon, "As a team we are focused and mindful of the rules, here to have some good clean fun."

Why you should root for them: Because an all-girl team should win The Amazing Race soon.

OMG! How cool is that! You know who i'm rooting for now isn't it? Smiley Smiley Smiley

IT'S MELODY! OUR LOCAL ACTRESS! SO SUPRISING!!

Aubrey & Jaq seems weak. I'm not pinning my hopes on them  win.

The Indian Models might win. Alpha male teams will win...

AXN is also introducing AXN Mobile, a WAP entertainment portal that gives exclusive access to special made-for-mobile content that will allow viewers of The Amazing Race Asia to supplement their knowledge of the show. For instance, host Allan Wu, a Singapore-based model/actor, will have a video diary where he will share his thoughts at the end of each race day. There will also be interviews with eliminated teams. Viewers can also download interview clips, unseen footages and behind-the-scene shots.

how do we download those?  Huh

from Chip A.:

Quote:
Q:; Do you guys all then have to sign contracts to the effect that once the race is over and you all go home, you can't tell anyone if you have won or not, until the shows actually air? Can you not even tell your parents/family/spouse etc if you have won the million dollars til the night the finale airsHuh This is probably a stipulation of the contract because there would be too much risk of the result of the race slipping out if you did, am I rightHuh;

A: Yes, we sign a contract that rivals the thickness of the yellow pages and somewhere in there is a clause that says if we revel who wins or anything about the race before airing we can be sued for up to $5 million. Soooo;.no one knows but you, your teammate, the one emergency contact person who CBS contacts along the race to let them know you are okay (in my case it was my Dad; who also had to sign a confidentiality agreement as thick as ours) other teams, people who work on the show, who I am sure have their own confidentiality contract to sign and no one says anything about eventual winner until you all see it first.

Let the race begin - meet amazing race asia's malaysian teams
Everyone's favourite race is now heading our way.

Amazing Race Asia soon begins its inaugural run, continuing the already four-time Emmy Award-winning reality competition series that's taken the US by storm.

Amazing Race Asia marks the biggest AXN original production to date - and while the Asian edition is kept to the confines of our region, you can rest assured there's still enough drama and excitement to keep fans glued to their screens.

And Asia's a big place - there's no telling where the contestants will end up, we've been told to be ready for a feast of surprises in this no holds barred race.

As always, ten teams are all vying for the grand prize of US$100,000 (RM370,000) , and Amazing Race Asia has an assortment of contestants shoving and fi ghting their way to the fi nish line.

From models to lovers, brothers to best friends, expect an intense scramble to the finishing tarmac, where cute host Allan Wu will be waiting with the most important words they'll ever hear: "You're team number ...".

The ten teams were chosen from over 2000 applicants, and Malaysia has bagged themselves two teams instead of the normal one team per country.

There's the boyfriend-girlfriend team of Syeon and Andrew, and the best-friend all-girl team of Zabrina and Joe Jer.

Will either of the two teams add another feather to Malaysia's hat of achievements? You're going to have to tune in to fi nd out! We had a chat with Syeon and Zabrina on what it was like to participate in the race of their life:

what was running in your mind when you guys were told you were chosen for the show?
syeon: I was very excited - thrilled, in fact, because it's the only reality TV show I actually watch. I jumped up and down! When I found out, there was no doubt in my mind what was running in your mind when you guys were told you were chosen for the show? who my partner would be: my boyfriend Andrew.
zabrina: I was walking down the street when I got the call, I started jumping too and people were staring at me! I think everyone wants to be on this show.

how did you guys get leave from work?
s: I told my boss I had to take leave for "personal reasons"!
z: I've been learning Spanish for a while, so I told my boss that I was taking a month off to go to Barcelona and learn Spanish. Luckily, they don't even know that they don't speak Spanish in Barcelona!

give us a little insight - where did you guys travel to?
s: We can't tell you!
z: But you'd be surprised where we travel to.

australia has to be on the list, right?
s: Well, Australia is legitimately a part of Asia ...

how long did the entire thing take?
z: Everything took one month, one month of complete travelling.

did you get any breaks in between shoots or was everything a continuous rush?
s: What you see on the show is what you get.
z: We got to sleep, but there's 12 hours of straight travelling, so the timing on the show is pretty accurate. There's no Amazing Race tour package!

how much luggage were you allowed to bring with you on your travels?
s: As long as you can carry it, you can bring it. I'm quite a small girl, so I packed quite a light bag.
z: Finding a backpack that wasn't going to be trouble during the travelling was an adventure in itself! I packed a light bag too, but it was still pretty heavy for me.

was there anything you forgot to pack?
s: I purposely left my make up behind. I didn't care about people watching me on television or how I looked, I was there to focus on the race.
z: I brought one lipstick! But that's basically the only make up I use anyway. So during the race, that lipstick made it's rounds with the girls!

was the race more challenging than you expected? Compare what the viewers see on TV to the real thing.
s: You can't really compare the two - but in my case, I was afraid that I would have to physically face my worst fear: bugs! I would've absolutely freaked if I had to. Luckily I didn't have to.
z: I think everyone had to face their fears. But when I watched Amazing Race at home, I'd be shouting at the contestants, "It's left! Don't go right, go left!" and things like that. But when you're in it, you can see how confusing the race is and how easy it is to get lost or take the wrong turn. Sometimes, I thought, "Oh my god, people at home are going to watch this and shout the same things at me!"

what was host Allan Wu like - was he helpful at all?
s: I didn't feel funny talking to him, he's very nice. He's got a great poker face!
z: Allan Wu was hot! And he's one of the most approachable people. In an instant you can tell that he's a cool guy, great to hang out with.

did anyone cheat?
s: Ha! You'd be surprised!
z: Everyone played the race how they thought was best for them. I guess being in an all-girl team, we felt we had something more to prove.

what was the one thing you guys missed the most during the race?
s: I missed my dogs and wardrobe!
z: Me, too. I only brought the essential clothes, so I missed having a variety of clothes to chose from. It's a girl thing, I guess!

what do you miss most about the show itself?
s: I miss the intensity of the race, I miss feeling that everyday.
z: That's the same for me - the intensity of the show. Plus, you get to know all the contestants; it becomes like a secret special club. I miss that feeling.

were there times you felt like killing your partner?
s: No, I never felt like killing Andrew; we were always on the same page everyday of the race.
z: Of course, I felt killing my partner! But because of the pace of the show, you don't dwell on it. You blow up quickly and you move on quickly.

what was the best thing about being a part of Amazing Race Asia?
s: Experiencing such an intense race, in such a competitive environment. I love competing. Now life seems a little boring!
z: From a TV standpoint, because I work in the TV industry, I wanted to fi nd out about the production side of Amazing Race. A definite plus.

did you guys have any secret weapons that helped your teams get ahead?
s: We called ourselves "Pocket Rockets"! People can underestimate small people - but what really matters was the mentality we took with the race. We were strong minded, and were reasonably fit, so that was important.
z: Our secret was based on other teams bad luck!

what was the worst thing?
s: Andrew and I had a strategy: to divide the tasks and challenges, but when it came down to it, I guess I wanted to stay in my comfort zone, so I wish I pushed myself a little more.
z: We got no sleep! I didn't like that.

finally, come on: who won?we promise we won't tell anyone ...
s: We can't tell you that! But all ten teams are winners.
z: It's like the Grammy's ... it wouldn't be fun if we told you who won! But the most amazing thing is being a part of Amazing Race Asia's first edition. It's true it's like a club. Years from now, people won't remember who won - but we'll still be friends.

s: All the contestants now have a common ground. This is an experience that money can't buy.

Andrew and Syeon are in The Amazing Race Asia to satisfy their sense of adventure.

Not so easy

By RUBIN KHOO

If you're a fan of The Amazing Race, it is quite likely that you've spent a considerable amount of time sitting on your couch, criticising all the mistakes the contestants made. If you're one of those guilty of doing that, then you'd best hold your tongue because it is a lot harder than it looks. That's at least what the Malaysian teams that made it on The Amazing Race Asia (TARA) expressed during a recent interview.

"On TV, it doesn't look that hard," said Andrew who teamed up with his girlfriend Syeon for the race.

But the physical demands of the race proved to be one of the major challenges. Teams only had a 12-hour rest period before gearing up to run the race once again.

Fatigue was one thing but the participants also had to contend with making snap decisions.

"You have to make fast decisions," said Syeon. "I come from a consulting background where you have to look at every scenario."

This meant that most of the decision-making was delegated to Andrew. The couple who have been together for 18 months met while snowboarding in Australia. Andrew is Malaysian while Syeon, an Australian, is of Korean descent.

"We entered the race to do something different," said Andrew. "There are some things that you would only get the opportunity to do on a show like The Amazing Race."

"It is also about a sense of adventure," he added. "Instead of just watching, you get to become a part of this experience."

For Malaysian participants Joe Jer and Zabrina who are self-professed fans of the race, when the prospect of participating came along, they jumped at it.

"We love The Amazing Race," said Zabrina. "We love travelling and you don't always get the chance to do things like this."

The ex-colleagues became close friends through their mutual love for television. Being the die-hard fans that they are, it wasn't surprising that the race turned out to be all that they expected.

"I knew my limits, I knew my comfort zone and they were all confirmed," Zabrina said with a laugh. She added that she is likely to be the "annoying" one in the race as she was "highly emotional", spending quite a lot of time crying.

Joe Jer, on the other hand, remained calm throughout the race. Their initial strategy was not to be eliminated in the first round while for Andrew and Syeon it was to remain in the top three for each leg.

The two teams were selected from over 1,000 applicants. Among the unusual questions that they were asked during the selection process was which celebrity they were most like.

Well, for Andrew it was Justin Timberlake, Syeon - Jessica Alba, Zabrina - Thandie Newton and Joe Jer - Jackie Chan.

The Amazing Race Asia airs on AXN (Astro Channel 17) on Thursdays at 10pm. There are repeats on the same day at midnight and on Saturday (10pm).
