Lost star Monaghan reveals that more characters will be killed off in hit drama.

LOST creator J J Abrams wasn't joking when he told Today in an exclusive interview that a main character would not survive the entire course of the hit television series.

The anticipation to see who would be killed off drew viewers by the millions, making Lost one of the most popular shows in the United States and Singapore.

In the end, it proved to be sweet, sensitive Boone (Ian Somerhalder) who died after he fell from a height in an episode aired recently on MediaCorp TV Channel 5.

The bad news doesn't end there (spoiler alert!).

The Emmy-award winning series for best drama and directing, which chronicles the exploits of the survivors of a plane crash on a remote island, will see another of its 14 main characters killed off in the second season, according to Lost star and Lord of the Rings veteran Dominic Monaghan.

Monaghan, who plays faded rock star Charlie on the show, confirmed the speculation: "Yeah, actually we've already filmed that episode. It's going to be televised in America next week.

"One of the main characters will be killed."

Speaking exclusively on the phone from Oahu, Hawaii where the series was filmed, he told Today: "It's a shame when anyone dies, especially someone with whom you've formed a relationship on the show.

"Unfortunately it's the nature of the show, you know. There's a big monster on the island, it's all about life and death and anything can happen because of the dynamics that the creators set up.

"They can kill off any major character. It's something that you don't necessarily expect, but it's also not too much of a shock when it comes. You know, it's all adding to the storyline."

Then with a good-natured laugh, the Berlin-born, Britain-based actor continued: "It's nothing personal. It's nothing the actor has done. It's just the fact that it works for the story.

"Someone's got to go!"

Performing a secret service

Despite further prompting, Monaghan would not be drawn into plot specifics.

But when this reporter suggested that his character must be safe by the fact that he was giving this interview he said, teasingly: "That might not necessarily be true, you know.

"I mean I'm going to be playing in Singapore for a while just yet, so it makes sense for me to do some interviews and then maybe I'll disappear in a few months.

"Nobody is sacred on this show. Nobody is protected."

Channel 5 will air the last four episodes of the highly-addictive series from this Thursday, leading up to an explosive finale.

Of the cliff-hanger final episode, Monaghan said: "Singaporeans will love it. The pace is really frenetic. There are a lot of things going on.

"The launching of the raft takes place in that episode, and it appears that people are coming again to try to do harm to the main characters."

Season two of Lost is slated to air on Channel 5 in March next year.

Asked if the budding relationship between Claire (Emilie de Ravin) and former drug addict Charlie would develop further, he said: "I think Claire for Charlie represents something that he is attracted to.

"She's a good reason for him not to take drugs anymore. She's a good reason for him to be sensible. And her baby is a way for him to channel some of his feelings of irresponsibility into becoming a surrogate father."

But whether that relationship would blossom into love remained to be seen, Monaghan said.

"The script is pretty secretive. We get to read the script about a week to 10 days before we film it, about three weeks before the episode goes on air," he revealed.

"Obviously, it's a story that works around cliff-hangers so the writers are pretty keen on keeping the cards quite close to their chests."

Not that it's stopped fervent Lost followers asking the cast for clues.

"When the first season started, we were always being asked about that monster in the show. Right now, it's not being featured so all that talk has calmed down.

"The main question I get asked now is: 'Are you guys all dead?'" the 28-year-old added, laughing again.

"It's great that people are interested. But I think the answer is 'no' because scriptwriter Damon Lindelof told the press: 'It's one of the main theories that came out in season one but no, these guys are not dead.'

"But you never know."

No longer a hobbit

The breakout hit series has no doubt propelled Monaghan's career to a higher level.

Best remembered as the 1.2m-tall, hairy-footed hobbit Merry Brandybuck in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy before Lost came along, the British actor is heartened that viewers know him by his real name now.

"People know me as Dominic now instead of calling me by a character name," he said.

"They actually know that I have a name in real life which is kind of cool and something I've been quite keen to make happen for a while.

"People don't just think I'm a 'character' I'm a person in my own right! More than anything else, people call me by my name now.

"I'm not just a hobbit!"
