A
AARON

The infant son of Australian survivor Claire (Emilie de Ravin); was kidnapped by Rousseau in her ill-fated attempt to make a trade with the Others for her own abducted daughter, Alex. A psychic warned Claire — dumped by Aaron's father while she was still pregnant — that ''danger surrounds this baby.''

B
BLACK ROCK

Antique ship where the survivors found shackled skeletons in the hold — and nitroglycerin-caked dynamite to blow open the hatch. Inexplicably marooned in the landlocked ''Dark Territory,'' which Rousseau says, like the island itself, is protected by a ''security system'' (one explanation for the monsterlike happenings there).

C
COMIC BOOKS

Specifically, Faster Friends, a Spanish-language funny book in which Green Lantern and Flash encounter a polar bear. Soon after Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) flipped through it, a polar bear appeared on the island. Other conspicuous reading: Watership Down, A Wrinkle in Time, The Third Policeman, and The Turn of the Screw.

D
DHARMA INITIATIVE

Funded by reclusive munitions mogul Alvar Hanso through his peace-seeking Hanso Foundation, the Dharma Initiative is (or was) an inquiry into human behavior that originated with scientists Gerald and Karen DeGroot. Seeking to establish a ''large-scale communal research compound,'' the DeGroots built at least six research facilities on the island; Station 3 (or ''The Swan''), a bunker located under a hatch in the jungle, was tasked with studying electromagnetism. At some point an ''incident'' occurred, and consequently, a string of numbers must be inputted into a computer inside Station 3 every 108 minutes, or else...well, no one knows. Until recently, Station 3 was manned by Desmond, an acquaintance from Jack's past, who fled after Jack, Locke, and Kate entered the hatch. Are the castaways part of some sick psych experiment? Discuss.

E
ENFORCER

The Mafia-style job Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), a lower-class fisherman's son, reluctantly took for Sun's father. Jin entered management training at Mr. Paik's factory as a condition of marrying Sun (Yunjin Kim, pictured with Daniel Dae) but was ''promoted'' to ''special assistant,'' requiring him to beat a government official into submission.

F
FATE

Written on Charlie's (Dominic Monaghan) four finger bandages on his left hand. Also a major theme: What brought these people to this island? In Charlie's case: He'd flown to Australia hoping to lure his brother — the lead singer in their band, Drive Shaft — to a reunion.

G
GOLF COURSE

Built by Hurley (Jorge Garcia) after he found golf clubs in the wreckage.

H
HELEN AND HIBBS

Locke's previous-life girlfriend (Katey Sagal) from his anger-management support group, and Sawyer's former partner in crime (Robert Patrick), respectively. Other past-life all-stars: Tom (Mackenzie Astin), Kate's true love who died from gunshot wounds as she tried to elude authorities; Nadia (Andrea Gabriel), the insurgent Sayid (Naveen Andrews) risked his life to free; Walt's mom, Susan (Tamara Taylor), who died of a blood disorder; and Jack's wife/former patient, Sarah (Julie Bowen).

I
ISLAND

Where, oh where are our poor survivors? Flight 815 was six hours into its journey from Sydney to Los Angeles when, according to the pilot, he lost radio contact and tried to head back to Fiji, but the plane encountered turbulence and crashed some 1,000 miles off course. According to Rousseau, she was three days from Tahiti when her ship ran aground on Mystery Island. These facts would place our gang precisely...somewhere in the South Pacific. Or another dimension.

J
JACK

A spinal surgeon (Matthew Fox) who was bringing his father's body back home from Australia. The unofficial leader of the survivors, he's got plenty of daddy issues (he reported his doctor pop for being drunk in the operating room) and women issues (where is Sarah now?). A man of science, Jack often clashes with man of faith Locke.

K
KILLED

A moment of silence for our survivors who didn't: the man who was minced by one of the plane's engines postcrash; the pilot (Greg Grunberg), ravaged by a monstrous, unseen creature; the wounded U.S. marshal (Fredric Lane), felled by Sawyer's botched mercy shooting; a castaway named Joanna who drowned; another named Scott who was murdered by Ethan (William Mapother), who was later shot by Charlie; science teacher Arzt (Daniel Roebuck), blown to bits by dynamite; and Boone (Ian Somerhalder, pictured center), who was trapped in a small plane that fell out of a tree. Who's next? Tune in Nov. 9.

L
LOCKE

Destiny's child — or fortune's fool? Before the crash, John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) was a box-company pencil pusher with delusions of grandeur; his sleazy moneybags father swindled him out of a kidney; and an unspecified event rendered him paraplegic. But with the Flight 815 catastrophe, Locke's been born again: Now miraculously healthy and ambulatory, he's become dangerously smitten with an island he considers holy. The allusion to philosopher John Locke isn't accidental, but you can do that research yourself. This ain't Egghead Weekly, you know.

M
MR. CLUCK'S CHICKEN SHACK

The fast-food restaurant where Hurley (pictured) toiled before winning the lottery. Mr. Cluck's was eventually hit by a meteorite, an event Hurley (now worth $156 million) believes was connected to his ''cursed'' lotto numbers.

N
NUMBERS

Otherwise known as 4 8 15 16 23 42. Long ago, this string of digits was the cryptic content of a radio transmission broadcast from the island. The Numbers reached the mainland via two Navy dudes; one wound up a Numbers-mumbling nutcase who passed on the accursed arithmetic to Hurley. The full sequence (etched on the exterior of the hatch) is the code that must be inputted into the Dharma computer every 108 minutes — 108 being the sum of the Numbers.

O
OTHERS

A sinister group of kid-fixated island denizens. The only Others known to the castaways are Ethan, who infiltrated their ranks to kidnap the pregnant Claire, and the overall-wearing creepazoids who stole Walt from the raft.

P
PEANUT BUTTER

Among the delicacies found in the hatch's pantry, which also includes Dharma Initiative Ranch Composite Salad Dressing, Apollo candy bars, canned tuna, shampoo, potato chips, and many other indistinguishable nonperishables.

Q
QUARANTINE

Warning printed on the inside of the hatch lid that may be a reference to a biological disaster hinted at by...

R
ROUSSEAU

Unstable Frenchwoman (Mira Furlan) responsible for the looped distress call heard 16 years later by the castaways. She later kidnapped Sayid. Rousseau claims she was one of several scientists on a research mission when their boat ran aground, and that she had to kill her fellow scientists (including her husband, Robert) after they got ''infected.'' Also the doomsday prophesier of the Others.

S
SAWYER'S STASH

Stuff scavenged from the wreckage by swindler-in-a-previous-life James ''Sawyer'' Ford (Josh Holloway) — shaving cream, flashlights, magazines, books, lots of mini liquor bottles. The booty led to his torture when he was suspected of hoarding Shannon's inhalers, but it also bought him a spot on the escape raft.

T
TAILIES

Fan jargon for the folks in the back of the plane, who crashed on the other side of the island. Kidnapped Jin, Sawyer, and Michael (Harold Perrineau). Of the 23 who survived the impact, only a handful remain (presumably because of a mysterious illness, or the Others, or both), including Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez), who had a preflight flirt with Jack; Bernard (Sam Anderson), husband of Rose (L. Scott Caldwell), who's among the original survivors; seemingly friendly Libby (Cynthia Watros); and Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who has Lockean survival know-how.

U
U.S. MARSHAL

The official who tracked Kate (Evangeline Lilly) across the globe for three years after her still-unknown crime, catching her in Australia. Was escorting her back to the States on the doomed flight.

V
VINCENT

Walt's cute yellow Lab — and fearless jungle explorer — is the lone animal survivor of the crash. His care was entrusted to Shannon (Maggie Grace) when Walt left on the raft.

W
WALT

Michael's young son, raised abroad by his mother, who married another man shortly after his birth. Walt (pictured) awkwardly reunited with his construction-worker/struggling-artist father in Australia after Mom died — and after Stepdad begged Michael to take the peculiar boy. Walt may possess reality-warping powers (see: polar bear, suicidal bird). Currently in the custody of the Others — as far as we know. Anyone seen Dr. Moreau?

X
X-FILES

Oft cited by Lost's producers as an influence. (Also see: David Lynch's Twin Peaks, Mark Burnett's Survivor, Aaron Spelling's Fantasy Island.) Like Chris Carter's cult crossover, Lost explores a conflict between reason and faith through two characters: Jack and Locke. Maybe one day, they'll even kiss.

Y
YIN-YANG

The interdependent relationship — and inherent conflict — between opposites is one of Lost's many Big Ideas, underscored through recurring black-and-white motifs. (See: backgammon, the Dharma Initiative logos, the stones found with the ''Adam and Eve'' skeletons.)

Z
ZOOLOGY

Lost's isle is teeming with wildlife: Pillaging packs of pigs. Furious polar bears. And, of course, a man-eating ''monster.'' We know the Dharma Initiative included zoology research, and we've spotted a Dharma-branded shark. Hmmm...
