World Race 2004
Episode Two: Battle Wounds

Previously on World Race 2004:

Twenty people left the Grand Canyon in Arizona in a race around the world in search for $2,000,000. The teams’ first destination was Buckingham Palace in the United Kingdom. At the first Tandem Task, teams went into the palace to match a painting. Margaret and Louise, the 70-year old army nurses, opted to skip this task and use their only Skip-Ahead of the race. This move landed them in first, three hours ahead of the second place team.
Once teams finished the Tandem Task, one member went into the famous Hedge Maze and searched for keys to a truck and directions to the Check-In. Everyone finished, and in a very close race to the finish, Dennis and Joyce,  the 70ish grandparents, managed to beat out two other teams. In a extremely close final sprint, coworkers Frank and Jim managed to beat out Charles and Ed Darlutz, brothers and the two Midwestern-born brothers were the first team eliminated from the competition.
Can Margaret and Louise keep up their momentum from the previous leg? Can Dennis and Joyce overcome the age barrier and rise to the top? Can Jim and Frank keep up with the thinner, more in shape pack? Find out now!

Margaret and Louise, who arrived a t 12:46 pm, will depart at 12:46 am.
“Wow it’s early,” said Louise as John Goodman handed her the clue. She ripped it open. “Fly yourselves to Berlin, Germany and go to the Wall,” she read as she took the keys out of the envelope.
“We want to keep up our lead for as long as we can, because we already used our Skip-Ahead. We needed to or we’d be gone instead of the brothers,” says Margaret.
Margaret pulled the Equinox into the space and they got out. The two elderly contestants walked calmly into the airport. Louise went to the counter and did the talking.
“Can I get the earliest flight into Germany?” asked Louise.
“For the racers it is 6:45 on Lufthansa Air,” said the attendant with a British accent.
“Go to sleep!” ordered Louise to Margaret. Louise walked over and laid down next to her.
The second team to check in, Thom and Paula, who arrived at 3:45 pm, will depart at 3:45 am.
“Go to the Berlin Wall,” said Thom as he handed Paula the keys ad they slowly walked to the car. After driving awhile, Thom realized they were lost.
“I don’t  know where we are!” he exclaimed.
“Well go back to the hotel and ask where the airport is!” commanded Paula.
“Don’t order me around!” replied Thom spinning the wheel as he saw a sign to a restaurant.
The third team to arrive, James and Randy, who checked in at 4:03 pm, will depart at 4:03 am.
“Your driving,” said James after he finished reading the clue. They got into the truck and easily found the airport.
“So one team is already on this flight, not two and we’re the third?” asked Randy the airline attendant.
“Those older women are on the flight, no other teams have come,” said the attendant handing Randy the tickets. Margaret woke up and walked over to James.
“Are Thom and Paula here?” she asked, wondering where the divorced couple was.
“No, but better for us!” celebrated James. Randy pulled James aside.
“Let’s buy the next team their tickets,” said Randy hatching a plan.
“Why?” asked James as Margaret went back to Louise and explained the story.
“We can’t outrun Rhonda and Nancy, but we can outrun Theodore and his daughter,” explained James.
“It’s up to you,” said Randy taking out the money to buy two more tickets.
“Okay so we go left for a half a mile and we should be able to see the airport?” questioned Thom who had gotten out of the truck and went into the restaurant to ask for directions. They finally made it to the airport.
“So the first flight is booked?” asked a discouraged Thom turning to go face his ex-wife’s wrath again. “We’re on the second flight,” said Thom.
“You are so….STUPID!!!” said Paula starting to cry.
Marcia and Theodore opened their clue.
“Come on!” she screamed as her father lagged behind her. She heard a thud and her Navy SEAL father shriek in pain.
“I had surgery on my knee before the race and I guess I aggravated it,” assumes Theodore.
“I tripped over the curb,” said Theodore as his daughter rushed back to help him. She knelt by his side as Rhonda and Nancy went running by. She knew they were still resentful of her and her dad’s fourth place finish, so she didn’t even ask for help.
“Come on Nance, we’re in fourth!” rejoiced Rhonda packing her bag into the Equinox.
“I’ll be okay, we just have to take the Skip-Ahead once we get into Germany,” said Theodore getting up and limping towards the Chevy. They eventually reached the airport and got on the first flight.
“I was angry Randy and James gave them the tickets,” comments Rhonda on finding out they were on the second flight.
Howard and Al, who arrived at 4:45 pm, will depart at 4:45 am. They made their way to the airport and became the third team of four on the second flight.
Walter and Loni, who arrived at 5:00 pm, will depart at 5:00 am.
“Let’s go,” said Loni. They filled up the second flight.
Grandparents Dennis and Joyce, who arrived at 5:34 pm, will depart at 5:34 am.
“A whole new adventure in… Germany!” screamed Joyce as she walked behind her husband to the eighth truck.
“So we’re on the last flight with Jim and Frank,” informed Dennis to his partner, Joyce.
Jim and Frank, who arrived at 6:35 pm, will depart at 6:35 am.
“I’m sure we’re on the last flight, I just hope we bunch up once we’re in Germany,” prayed Jim pulling his car into the airport.
The first flight left for Germany at 6:45 am. This flight carried the top three teams, retired army nurses Margaret/Louise, fraternity brothers James/Randy, and the last team on the first flight, father and daughter Marcia/Theo.
The second flight left at 7:00 am. This flight carried four other teams. They were, Howard/Al the coworkers, Loni/Walter dating, Rhonda/Nancy moms, and lastly the arguing divorcees, Thom/Paula.
The final flight left at 7:45 am, carrying the two last place teams, Grandparents Dennis/Joyce, and coworkers Jim/Frank.
The first flight landed in Berlin, Germany at 3:35 pm. James and Randy were the first out of the plane, followed by ex-army nurses, Louise and Margaret, and in third, Marcia and her injured dad, Theodore. James got the first clue and ripped it open.
“Go to the Berlin Wall and get your Tandem Task,” read Margaret, holding the second clue.
“This is it,” said a hurt Theo ripping open the envelope for the Skip-Ahead.
“Make your way to the Check-In point, the Oppenheimer museum in Southern Berlin,” read Marcia as she hailed a cab to take them there.
“Oppenheimer Museum! And step on it!” ordered Marcia as her dad made his way to the taxi.
The second plane landed at 4:34 pm. First out of this flight were Howard and Al, coworkers who had pulled themselves out of last place. Next out were Rhonda and Nancy, then Thom and Paula and lastly Loni and Walter. Loni and Walter were the seventh team to arrive at the Berlin Wall. They got their clue which told them to go to the majestic Southern Cliffs where they would have to accomplish their Solo Task.
The final plane arrived at 4:45 pm. Dennis and Joyce were the first ones off the plane followed by Jim and Frank, who still couldn’t pull themselves out of last.
“This place doesn’t open until 6:00 pm,” said James who had arrived with his teammate at the cliff jumping Solo Task. Margaret and Louise were second in line, and Rhonda and Nancy in third, Howard and Al in fourth, Loni and Walter in fifth. Thom and Paula hadn’t arrived yet. An Equinox pulled into the lot and all five teams in line were shocked to see Dennis and Joyce come jogging, holding hands in line and in sixth place.
Thom and Paula failed to get another taxi from the Berlin Wall, and so did Howard and Al, who were tied with them in last place.
“Got one,” said Paula as a red cab pulled over. She and Thom turned around and were picking up their bags.
“Go!” they heard and Paula recognized Frank’s voice. She spun around and saw the taxi zooming away with Jim and Frank laughing in the backseat.
“Look what you did!” yelled Thom.
“You looked away!” screamed back Paula.
“We had bad luck at the very beginning of this leg of the race, with his wrong turn and all,” says Paula.
James looked at his watch. 6:00 on the dime. The gates opened immediately the teams began selecting who would go.
“Me!” said Randy becoming the first to run through the gates.
“Go ahead, Louise,” said Margaret going down the stone stairs to meet her friend at the bottom.
“Al, you’re going,” ordered Howard flying down the stairs behind Margaret. Nancy and Rhonda were busy arguing who would go as  Loni ran in followed by Dennis.
“They cut us!” barked Rhonda shoving Nancy through the gates. Randy was already suited up. On go, he threw himself over the cliff, he landed in the water and swam to James who was waiting for him. Frank ran through the gates. The only team behind was Thom and Paula. Louise then walked to the edge of the cliff very slowly and walked off, holding her nose.
“Wait till my grandkids see this!” exclaims Louise.
Loni dove off the cliff and hit the ground. She swam to the side and Dennis threw himself over the side.
“At Eighty, my body doesn’t expect impacts like hitting the water like that,” says Dennis.
Thom swung the car to the side and Paula went flying through the entrance gates.
John Goodman watched an exhausted Marcia and Theo hobble up to the mat.
“You’ve faced many setbacks, but using the Skip-Ahead makes you team number one!” congratulated John. Marcia went to hug her dad but found him lying on the ground from exhaustion. She helped him up and they went into the castle until the next leg of the race.
Frank was the eighth person off the cliff. He swam to the side and quickly unzipped his wetsuit. Everyone except for Thom and Paula were tied right now, running to their trucks. Everyone reached their trucks and read their clues at the same time. They were off just as Paula hit the water. She practically glided over to the side and her and Thom ran hard, knowing they had some ground to make up.
“Hey, Dennis, look at this map,” said Joyce taking off her reading glasses as she saw something that might help.
“I’m driving, tell me what it is,” said Dennis staying focused on the road as he battle for position with the other racers.
“If we jump this fence, we can take a running path to the castle. We’re tied and it is going to come down to a footrace, we need anything to give us an advantage,” said Joyce as her husband pulled the car over.
“Come on,” said Dennis popping open the hatch and putting on his pack. They saw all of the other cars get by, even Thom and Paula’s. Dennis ran at the two-foot barbed wire fence and managed to hoist himself over and into the grass.
“I will do anything to win, and I know Joyce would too,” says Dennis.
Joyce ran and her husband grabbed her arms and she slowly hoisted herself one foot at a time over the fence.
“Move!” said Dennis starting a slow jog to the castle.
All of the seven other trucks parked. Everyone got out at the same time. James and Randy pulled ahead as everyone began the run to John. Loni and Walter were close behind, followed by Howard and Al.
“Come on, honey,” encouraged the one of the second place team’s members.
“I’m coming Dennis,” said Joyce catching up to her husband and grabbing his hand. She prayed her shortcut worked.
“Joyce and Dennis, you’re team number two,” said John smiling at the older couple.
“Two, as in one-two?” asked Dennis holding up two fingers, shocked at their ranking.
James and Randy slowed their sprint to a walk as they came up to the mat.
“Congrats, you’re team three,” said John shaking the college student’s hands. “Who beat us besides Marcia and Theo?” asked Randy surprise he hadn’t heard John say they were in second.
“Joyce found a shortcut and she and Dennis came in second,” said John.
“Wow,” simply said Randy, shocked at the elderly couple’s quick-thinking.
The fourth place team stepped firmly on the mat.
“Al and Howard, you’re team number four!” exclaimed John. The team high-fived each other and jogged into the castle. The fifth place team power-walked to the mat.
“Marge and Louise, you’re team five,” informed John.
“For a couple of senile old gals, we aren’t too bad,” said Margaret confident about the rest of the race.
“We’re coming, we’re coming!” screamed Rhonda as she and Nancy stepped on the mat in sixth. They hugged John and then hugged each other once they were informed of their rank.
“Don’t forget about us!” screamed Frank as his thinner teammate stepped in front of John before him.
“You’re in seventh,” said John as they ran into the huge castle to see what was inside. Two teams hadn’t arrived yet. Only the first to arrive would advance. The other would be eliminated. It would either be Loni and Walter or Thom and Paula.
“If we’re eliminated you owe us a drink!” screamed a woman running to the mat.

It was the younger of the remaining two teams, Loni and Walter.
“I won’t have to, because you’re team number eight,” said John shaking their hands.
Thom and Paula gave it an all out sprint to the finish, because the only saw seven cars in the lot, Dennis and Joyce’s was on the side of the road.
“Yes! After all that we’re still here!” rejoiced Paula stepping on the mat with her ex-husband.
“I’m, I’m sorry--um, Joyce and Dennis parked on the side of the road because they found a shortcut, you’re ninth, you’re eliminated,” John said as he instantly became the bearer of bad news. Paula broke down into her
ex-husband’s chest.

After the Race
Thom: “You know, if we had won, I think we would’ve gotten back together, but we were eliminated for a reason.”
Paula: “I hate Jim and Frank. They stole our cab and they’re the reason were going home! I hate them!……….I hate them! I hope their next!”
Next Time on World Race 2004
->Eight teams leave the Oppenheimer Museum and depart for a country where no one wants to go
->“I’m not going there, I don’t give a damn if we lose the race because of it!” says one contestant
->“We’ve been worse places.” brags one team.
->Two last place teams want the Skip-Ahead but only one will get it. Who is it and will the other team be bitter?

And the villains still prevailed here too. Don't worry, Jim and Frank aren't as intense as Colin and Crispy.

Unlike TAR, the "oldies" in this race are smart and don't make mistakes.  Wink
