Keep Those Children In The Back Seat

We lost a precious 7 year old life here in Indiana on Monday.  The little girl was riding in the front seat of the family car when it was hit from behind by another car, sending it into the rear of a pickup truck and causing the air bags to deploy.  The girl was wearing a seat belt and was injured by the air bag's impact.  None of the vehicles sustained much damage.  The accident apparently broke the girl's spine.

POLICE RECOMMEND THAT CHILDREN RIDE IN THE BACK SEAT OF CARS UNTIL THEY ARE  12 YEARS OLD.

rhune this is so true.  Also please everyone use the proper car seats for your children.  The seatbelts do not fit them properly until they are about 8 or 9 years old.  They are designed for children up to 80 pounds and only when the reach the proper height, and the length of leg that allows their legs to drop over the edge of the seat, can they use the regular seats and belts.

There are numerous studies, sadly reflecting the reality of children's deaths in car accidents.  Thanks for the reminder again.

I'm so sorry to hear that happened. Sad

One correction to Addam's message.. they are designed for people over 80 pounds (not up to 80 pounds).

We use booster seats here to make the seatbelts fit properly.  I think my kid likes having one anyway, because he can sit up higher and see more.

Sadly this also applies to small people

There was a sad death a couple of years ago in Toronto where the driver of the car was very petite.  She was in a fender bender - just tapping the car ahead of her - and the air bag deployed and killed her.  She of course had no choice but to be in the front seat.  Then it is a decision of whether to have air bags or not.

OTOH we know a young woman who was in a very serious car accident with a vehicle driving into the driver's side door and she walked away from the accident because of side air bags.

Air bags are dangerous to small people and the best way to prevent injury by air bags is to be the back seat whenever possible.
